Return To School: Support for Students & Teachers

According to a recent survey commissioned by Box Tops for Education, teachers are the most trusted individuals of influence in their community, following first responders, doctors and nurses. Nearly half of respondents also strongly agreed that teachers are not celebrated enough. With students heading back to school this January, Emmy-nominated author, host, producer, MIT-engineer expert, and mom of two, Emily Calandrelli, is here to talk about the need for equity in education, including tips on how anyone – parents, friends, family or neighbors can get involved and support schools. 00:00 According to a recent survey commissioned by Box Tops for Education, teachers are one
00:04 of the most trusted individuals of influence in their community, following first responders,
00:09 doctors and nurses.
00:11 Yesterday I talked with Emmy-nominated author, MIT engineer expert and mom of two, Emily
00:17 Calandrelli about some tips on how anyone can get involved and support schools.
00:25 Good morning Emily, thank you for being here.
00:27 Good morning.
00:29 So tell me a little bit about, as children are returning to the classroom, how can the
00:33 community support schools?
00:35 Right, so I know so many of us are always looking for ways to support kids and teachers
00:42 and schools in our area and one of the easiest ways that we can do that is with the Box Tops
00:47 for Education app.
00:49 I'm sure many people remember like cutting off box tops from the cereals that we ate
00:54 as a child and like bringing those physically into the school, but now there's an app and
00:59 it makes it super easy.
01:01 So all you have to do is scan your grocery receipt and it automatically knows what products
01:07 you bought were box tops participating products and it automatically tallies up the cash that
01:12 you've earned for your school.
01:13 So it's a super simple way to literally earn cash for schools.
01:17 These schools receive a check in the mail to help support the incredible work they're
01:20 already doing and it's a really simple way for all of us to participate in that.
01:24 And you know, I do remember doing that as a kid, getting those box tops and it was always
01:28 kind of a fun thing too as a little kid.
01:31 So why is it important for families to do this?
01:34 Yeah, I mean, you know, teachers are always in need of more resources to do the work that
01:40 they do and teachers are often our first line of defense when it comes to inspiring kids
01:45 to want to learn, to be curious.
01:48 My tagline is always stay curious and keep exploring and I feel like teachers are the
01:52 number one way that we can help make sure the next generation does that.
01:57 And this is a simple way to help support teachers and that goal.
02:00 You know, my mom is a teacher and so everything you said is fantastic.
02:04 I know she can always use more resources and the more we can help the better.
02:09 And tell me how this kind of a program helps create more equity in the classroom.
02:14 Absolutely.
02:15 So the coolest thing about this app is that you don't need to have a kid in school.
02:19 You don't even need to be a parent to participate in it.
02:22 Anybody can do this and you can choose a school in your area.
02:26 But an additional thing that I think is really interesting is that the app allows you to
02:30 choose a school in need.
02:32 So if you don't have a school in mind, you can just go to the app and click school in
02:36 need and it identifies title one schools.
02:39 And so you can find a school that can use a little bit more extra resources and help
02:43 support them every time you grocery shop.
02:46 Oh, that's so great.
02:47 I mean, because for me, I am a mom, but my child is still very, very little.
02:51 He is not quite school aged yet.
02:54 So I can pick a school, for instance, that maybe he would go to, or maybe even that he
02:58 won't that I see in my community that needs help.
03:02 Exactly.
03:03 I'm in the same boat.
03:04 My kids are four and one and they're not yet in public schools.
03:07 And so for me, I just choose a school in my home state of West Virginia to support like
03:12 the great school that I went to growing up.
03:14 And anybody can do this.
03:15 You can just pick a school that's a participating school and box tops to support.
03:19 It's really nice.
03:20 And you're getting to eat some delicious cereal along with this great program.
03:25 So is there anything else you want people to know who are getting involved?
03:28 Yeah.
03:29 One of the fun things they're doing right now is there's a sweepstakes.
03:32 So anybody who downloads the box tops for education app and scans a receipt with box
03:37 tops participating products is automatically entered to win $20,000 for a school of their
03:44 choice.
03:45 And to learn more about that and everything else box tops related, you can go to box tops
03:49 for the number four education.com.
03:52 Oh my gosh, that's incredible.
03:54 So not only can you help them out kind of on a regular basis through the app, but when
03:59 you're entering, you could potentially be winning them tens of thousands of dollars,
04:04 literally 20 grand.
04:05 That's huge.
04:06 It's huge.
04:07 Absolutely.
04:08 And that the, the number that really stands out in my mind is that box tops has been around
04:13 for 25 years and over the course of those two and a half decades, they've helped families
04:18 earn nearly a billion dollars for schools across the country.
04:23 So the money adds up really quickly.
04:25 It's really exciting.
04:26 Like B with a, with like billion with a B. To me, that's so impressive.
04:30 That is really cool.
04:31 Well, Emily, thank you so much for sharing about this.
04:33 Definitely go get the app.
04:34 Sounds nice and easy.
04:35 Thank you so much.
04:36 Thank you.
04:36 Bye.
04:37 Bye.
04:37 Bye.
04:38 Bye.
04:38 Bye.
