00:00:45 It is a post-season Believe in Carolina Panthers Podcast episode.
00:00:49 I'm your host, Desmond Johnson, joined by All Panthers SI, beat writer Skylar Callahan,
00:00:54 and the Panthers all-time lead and rusher, Jonathan Stewart.
00:00:56 In the house, everybody here, season is over.
00:01:00 Bless it, 2015 season might have come down as the worst season in Panthers history.
00:01:06 We survived it, just like we survived the weather that came through the Carolinas today.
00:01:09 Hope everybody's safe, got power, and you're able to watch us here on Believe in Panthers,
00:01:13 here on the Believe Podcast Network, brought to you by Bet Online.
00:01:16 We've got a loaded show today.
00:01:18 Of course, this is the time of the year where Skylar Callahan shines.
00:01:22 We get into coaching searches and GM searches and things of that sort, so we'll definitely
00:01:26 get the latest from Skylar.
00:01:28 Final thoughts on the 2023 season from both these guys, any bright spots they can think
00:01:32 of that they want to highlight, get a little positivity in here for us, because that's
00:01:35 how we do on Believe in Panthers.
00:01:37 End of season awards, offense and defensive players of the year we'll nominate, biggest
00:01:41 breakout player, storyline of the year for the team, and some comments from Brian Burns
00:01:46 that I thought were pretty interesting that we pulled that we'll talk about as well.
00:01:49 Of course, the big news for us in the title of this episode, Scott Fitter gets fired after
00:01:54 three years of being general manager of the Carolina Panthers.
00:01:56 We'll talk about that.
00:01:57 The Fitterer timeline, we'll get into that as well.
00:01:59 Some of the moves he made, just comment on how good or bad those moves were that he did.
00:02:07 Top candidates, it seems like there's some maybe possible internal candidates emerging.
00:02:11 We'll talk about that as well.
00:02:12 Of course, we know we've got to talk about my man Jim Harbaugh, won the national championship
00:02:17 for Michigan last night.
00:02:18 Everybody that watches the show knows he's one of my favorites to take over as the head
00:02:21 coach here.
00:02:22 I did not realize, guys, that he has a relationship with Ejiro Evero.
00:02:26 He was on his staff when he was the head coach of the 49ers.
00:02:28 That kind of made me go, "Ooh."
00:02:31 We'll talk about that a little bit more as well.
00:02:32 Before we get into all that stuff, we got to get a word in from our sponsors over at
00:02:35 Bet Online.

00:03:01 Bet Online, where the game starts and where we normally start is the box score.
00:03:05 We're not going to do that.
00:03:07 Nine to zero, Panthers get blanked out, I think, first time ever.
00:03:10 They've been blanked out back-to-back games in any part of the season in their entire
00:03:14 history.
00:03:15 To me, just a fitting way to end the season.
00:03:21 To me, the perfect way, I do remember this part because I was telling you guys off camera
00:03:25 I was sick on Sunday, so I was watching the game with a fever on the couch.
00:03:28 But the one thing I remember seeing that encapsulated the entire season to me was the should have
00:03:35 been touchdown throw to DJ Chark, where he catches it, Bryce breaks out on a scramble,
00:03:41 gets free, finds Chark wide open down the field.
00:03:43 You're all like, "Yes, yes, he's running down the field.
00:03:46 It's like he's going to get caught right at the goal line, gets punched out, touchback,
00:03:50 give the ball back to the Bucs.
00:03:53 No points."
00:03:54 And that's kind of how the season was for me and the Panthers.
00:03:58 I'm going to start it with you, Stu, because you're the positivity of this podcast panel.
00:04:03 You're the one that brings the light to the darkness.
00:04:06 So yeah, man, help us, please, because I don't know where to go here.
00:04:11 It's looking damn, brother.
00:04:12 It's 2-15 season, head coach gone, general manager gone.
00:04:16 We got free agents all over the place.
00:04:18 I'm going to get to the Brian Burns comments in a little bit, but just give me your overall
00:04:22 thoughts on this season and how it went down and how they can move forward.
00:04:26 I mean, in a nutshell, man, it was bad.
00:04:32 There's no way around that word.
00:04:36 I think everybody going into this season had high expectations, and rightfully so.
00:04:44 If you're a Panther fan, you don't go into any season thinking to yourself, "Oh, well,
00:04:53 here comes another season of losing," and nor does that locker room.
00:05:01 Coming in on paper, you look at what's on paper for the Carolina Panthers, and you say,
00:05:08 "Wow, this has a shot."
00:05:12 But I think what we've learned throughout this season is the importance of depth.
00:05:20 You don't have depth at certain positions, especially right there at front, offensive
00:05:28 line, defensive line.
00:05:31 And that having the consistent coaching around these players, and when I say consistency,
00:05:39 I feel like maybe we learned also, too, there's too many cooks in the kitchen this year.
00:05:45 >> We've got a lot, yeah.
00:05:48 >> And you got to figure out this offseason how to bring the right staff in here that
00:05:57 can lead men, that can change a culture, that can create a culture, and that voices could
00:06:06 be heard more.
00:06:11 And so that way, players know what voice to follow and what voice to depend on.
00:06:19 And I think the expectations were that we had that, and Carolina Panthers as a whole
00:06:29 have to figure out what they're going to be down the road, and down the road meaning now.
00:06:38 That time starts now.
00:06:39 >> Yes.
00:06:40 >> Start putting a plan in place now and follow it and stick to it.
00:06:46 I think a lot of times we take for granted stability.
00:06:55 And we can call Frank Reich, say that he failed, you can say Scott Fitterer failed.
00:07:05 You can say a lot of things about the people that have been in the tabloids of the sense
00:07:11 of, oh, these guys have failed.
00:07:16 But the truth of the matter is it's hard for anybody to be successful when you don't have
00:07:24 consistent footing, when you don't have something to fall back on, when you don't have an opportunity
00:07:36 to know what your culture is, to know what the baseline is.
00:07:41 And we haven't had that because we haven't had stability.
00:07:45 And so, but if you want me to go positive right now, I got your positive, Pete.
00:07:53 >> Please.
00:07:54 >> Going into this offseason, man, look, I'm gonna name off this guy right now, okay?
00:08:02 There's a scouting, I looked up this scouting report on this young man.
00:08:10 He is well rounded.
00:08:11 The big concern will be that he relies too much on his upper body strength at times.
00:08:17 This means that he plays with poor leverage and is too upright coming out of his stance.
00:08:23 However, this is something that should be correctable with the right coaching.
00:08:28 Who is that player?
00:08:29 >> Ike Iwana.
00:08:30 >> Ike Iwana?
00:08:31 >> No.
00:08:32 >> Is this a guy on the Panthers?
00:08:36 >> Guy on the Panthers.
00:08:39 >> Derrick Brown?
00:08:42 >> Yes, sir.
00:08:44 Derrick Brown, ladies and gentlemen.
00:08:47 >> Wow.
00:08:48 >> Look, Derrick Brown is my MVP.
00:08:52 >> Let's get into it, yeah.
00:08:56 Because when we wanna talk about what we should be looking forward to, we should be looking
00:09:02 forward to Derrick Brown being exactly what we saw this year.
00:09:08 If you're not drafting guys that have the same energy, the same craft, the same ability,
00:09:21 if we're not drafting guys like that, then we doing it all wrong.
00:09:26 And I'm talking about across the whole board, cuz watching Derrick Brown throughout the
00:09:29 season, the games that they were not in, and I mean every single game besides two.
00:09:36 >> Yeah.
00:09:37 >> Derrick Brown's energy is what I wanna see from all phases of football.
00:09:45 I mean, the attitude, the mindset, I mean- >> He grew up.
00:09:51 >> Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
00:09:53 Last year, towards the end of the season, or really once they let certain coaching staff
00:10:00 go last year, it was like he was unleashed.
00:10:04 It was like- >> You're right.
00:10:05 >> It was almost kinda like he started coaching himself or something, I don't know.
00:10:10 Because going through and listing off this player's weaknesses, I saw these weaknesses
00:10:17 as strengths this year.
00:10:19 Upper body strength.
00:10:20 >> He's back on 300 pound one.
00:10:23 >> Yeah, he was out there throwing people at the club.
00:10:25 Give me that tackle, I need that.
00:10:27 I gotta get this record out of the way right quick.
00:10:30 >> Shout out to him for that.
00:10:31 I didn't even realize that was the record.
00:10:32 So the record was what, 99?
00:10:34 He finished with 102 or something like that.
00:10:36 >> 102 and something, yeah.
00:10:37 >> 102 and something, so Derrick Brown's now your new NFL-
00:10:40 >> Yeah, shout out to Derrick Brown for being a record holder.
00:10:45 >> Wow.
00:10:46 >> You know what I'm saying?
00:10:48 You know that, I'm not gonna go out there and just say this, but he stays healthy.
00:10:54 He is on track for a Hall of Fame career.
00:10:56 >> I feel like he's one of those top four or five DTs a year from now, if not already.
00:11:02 >> Yes, he's the number one best defensive lineman in the league, hands down.
00:11:08 I don't care what you gotta say, argue with your mom.
00:11:11 >> Well, I know the Pro Bowl snows because nobody was really watching the Panthers.
00:11:14 Willie Smith says, a super fan for believing Panthers, says, if we were honest, about 18
00:11:17 months to two years ago, people were calling Derrick Brown a bust.
00:11:19 They were, people were, we weren't, but people were.
00:11:23 >> And we can say that if this is the case, 18 months to two years ago, the coaching was
00:11:31 a bust.
00:11:32 Because once they were let go, Derrick Brown was like, yes, I'm so glad they're gone and
00:11:39 I can play now or something.
00:11:41 >> If he's getting better pass rush, which I think he improved somewhat this year.
00:11:46 He gets to the quarterback more, starts averaging five, six, seven sacks a year.
00:11:50 We're gonna be talking about Derrick Brown like we talked about Aaron Donald for the
00:11:53 last couple of years.
00:11:54 >> I was gonna say the same thing, cuz I see the same stuff.
00:11:56 Like they're having to double him like every time.
00:11:57 >> Just strong, just so strong.
00:11:58 >> And he's still getting through.
00:11:59 >> He's still getting through.
00:12:00 >> He's a bona fide stuff.
00:12:01 >> Yeah, so he got that and he got another, cuz this is year four for him next year, right?
00:12:08 Or yeah, so- >> This was his fourth year, right?
00:12:11 >> Or was it?
00:12:12 So is he going into his fifth year?
00:12:13 No, Burton's going to his fifth year.
00:12:14 They can sign him to a fifth year now if they have to.
00:12:18 Brown is going into his- >> This was Derrick's fourth year.
00:12:21 >> This was his fourth year, so we're going to his fifth year too.
00:12:23 >> So was Burns on his fifth?
00:12:25 >> No, Burns was on his fifth.
00:12:28 >> Yeah.
00:12:29 >> He's still about to be an unrestricted free agent, yeah.
00:12:31 >> Jesus Christ, okay, so let's- >> You better pay Derrick Brown.
00:12:35 >> Yeah, you better pay Derrick.
00:12:38 From Burns being the number one priority to Derrick Brown is the thing you need to build
00:12:41 around everything else.
00:12:43 It needs to be him and then everything else.
00:12:44 Of course, I don't want Brian Burns to go anywhere, but give me your, from covering
00:12:49 the team all year, Skylar, give me your bright spot that you can think of for the season.
00:12:55 >> That is so quick.
00:12:59 I mean, there was no really good signs at all, really, outside of Derrick Brown.
00:13:05 I mean, it was just that bad of a year.
00:13:08 And I don't know, I mean, in some ways, I think we were all on David Tepper for pulling
00:13:16 the plug as early as he did on Frank.
00:13:18 And you can look at it in hindsight and say it was the right decision.
00:13:23 I still think it would have probably made sense to just let Frank go for a little bit
00:13:26 longer.
00:13:27 Not that he had to get the whole season, but I think regardless, we all kind of sensed
00:13:32 that this was gonna be a situation where they were gonna make a change.
00:13:37 And I don't know that it's necessarily Tepper admitting that he made a mistake.
00:13:44 I just think like, look, if something's not working, it's as bad as it is, gotta make
00:13:48 a change.
00:13:49 You can't prolong this thing.
00:13:50 You've got so much invested in the Bryce Young.
00:13:54 You've got to get this thing worked out now.
00:13:56 You can't wait.
00:13:57 You can't ruin this kid.
00:13:58 So I mean, we're gonna get into it with the coaches and stuff and the GM candidates, but
00:14:04 they have to absolutely get this offseason right.
00:14:08 Like if anything else, they've got to get the right coach, right GM players and stuff
00:14:12 that will all get figured out over the next two or three years.
00:14:14 Because like I said, the last episode, his team is not competing next year.
00:14:18 They're not competing two years from now.
00:14:20 They're going to potentially that window for them as you talk about all the time, doesn't
00:14:24 their window starts three years from now from when they can actually content.
00:14:30 See the problem with that is Bryce will be on the fourth year of his rookie contract.
00:14:33 So it's like it's not lining up.
00:14:36 They need someone that can explorate that timeline, right?
00:14:40 You start going and spending a ton of money in free agency, kind of like what Jacksonville
00:14:44 did with Trevor Lawrence on the rookie deal.
00:14:47 The problem is there.
00:14:48 It didn't work out.
00:14:49 Now look, most of that coaching staff has been fired.
00:14:52 So I don't know if that's the case, if that's what you want to do or not.
00:14:56 Regardless, they have got to fix the depth.
00:14:58 And I know I'm beating this like a dead horse, but the two deep, the three deep, if you go
00:15:03 and compare it every single week, and I do because I have to know the other team's situation,
00:15:08 plus I do their depth chart every week.
00:15:11 It is insane to see the guys that are on this two deep compared to other two deeps.
00:15:16 I mean, you look at some of these other teams, they got starters in their two deep.
00:15:21 Carolina's got guys that are probably fringe practice squad guys on other rosters.
00:15:25 Off the street, like a lot of them, it feels like.
00:15:29 I've had some time over the past couple of weeks because I felt like we were coming down
00:15:33 on, I didn't want us just to be part of the herd coming down on David Tepper because I
00:15:37 wanted to pull back out and just not look at it from like a microcosm.
00:15:42 You know what I mean?
00:15:43 I wanted to pull all the way back out now that the season was over and just kind of
00:15:45 look at what the man has done with the team since he's had it.
00:15:48 Yes, he hasn't had a winning season.
00:15:49 He hadn't really had a quarterback.
00:15:51 Teams have been this way or whatever, but I wanted to focus on the three coaching hires
00:15:55 that he had.
00:15:56 So really people say he's impatient and all these things, but looking back on it, he's
00:16:02 really tried three different ways to bring in a coach and the different times he's brought
00:16:06 in one.
00:16:07 So he had the traditional defensive guy in Ron Rivera here when he got here.
00:16:11 I can understand he wanted to clean house, start brand new.
00:16:13 It's his team, blah, blah, blah.
00:16:16 I get all that.
00:16:17 So you go get a college coach that's had success in college, you pretty much give him complete
00:16:22 control over football operations, which is what everyone's yelling for him to do now.
00:16:27 It didn't work.
00:16:28 So he pulls it away and he gives them almost three years to make it work.
00:16:32 Doesn't work.
00:16:33 Fires him.
00:16:35 The next guy brings in, well, Steve Wilkes was the interim, but the next person you bring
00:16:40 in is Frank Wright, which is basically the opposite of it.
00:16:42 You bring in kind of a CEO type and you try to fill an all-star cast of like coaches around
00:16:47 him thinking that, oh, you just need to surround a head coach with a bunch of talented coaches
00:16:51 and that'll work.
00:16:53 That didn't work too many voices.
00:16:54 He's fired for the season even begins.
00:16:56 So now I'm like, okay, he's about to hire his, his, he's about to actually hire his
00:17:01 third one.
00:17:02 And the guy I want the most, I want him to have the power that he had for the first guy.
00:17:06 I want him to hire Jim Harbaugh and give him the power that he gave Matt rule.
00:17:10 Like that, and that sound like the most sense.
00:17:11 Cause that's what kind of like what, cause you still have a GM here and I don't think
00:17:15 Jim Harbaugh wants full control.
00:17:17 He just wants to have some say and what's coming in.
00:17:19 He don't want to just be like, Hey, here's a player.
00:17:20 I forgot what to do.
00:17:21 And you don't know what Jim Harbaugh thinking boy.
00:17:24 I talked to him yesterday.
00:17:25 We talk all the time.
00:17:26 Like me and him, man, look, I talked to Obama yesterday.
00:17:31 I was the one that was telling him, Hey man, forget running quorum in the first and second
00:17:36 quarter run that other dude, the duty ran in like eight, nine weeks.
00:17:39 Run him.
00:17:40 Let's see what happens.
00:17:41 Yeah.
00:17:42 Hey, by the fact, who is that guy?
00:17:44 I don't know.
00:17:45 Wow.
00:17:46 And he was doing it.
00:17:47 Yo, he was doing it like tech mobile style.
00:17:49 Did you know, like he would like, they would, he would come up to the line and just wait
00:17:52 like a half second.
00:17:53 And then like everybody would bunch over here and he would just, he was running the first,
00:18:00 that first touchdown, he was running with his eyes closed.
00:18:03 Yeah.
00:18:04 He ran into the back of that line.
00:18:05 Sometimes it worked out because you hide and then you pop out as long as your head's still
00:18:09 up.
00:18:10 Man.
00:18:11 Oh, that was an interesting match.
00:18:12 You've been on gym for a long time.
00:18:15 And I think if you can get the right mix, it can work.
00:18:19 If Tepper's willing to have a coach with that much power, so-called, because I mean, when
00:18:26 we're talking about power, like Matt just had control of the roster and stuff like that
00:18:30 with Harbaugh, it's not, it's, it's more, it's like full on.
00:18:34 This is Jim's team.
00:18:36 That's what's going to happen.
00:18:37 That's what we want though.
00:18:38 Right.
00:18:39 We want somebody that can bring in a culture.
00:18:40 It's this whole operation.
00:18:41 And the other thing is too, is like, and I just dropped my phone, but we're all good.
00:18:53 So my first choice is still Ben Johnson, still Ben Johnson, but that kind of changed a little
00:19:01 bit today because I've said for weeks, you need an alpha and there's not a bigger alpha
00:19:09 on the market right now that break.
00:19:11 Ooh.
00:19:12 Yeah.
00:19:13 Let's I've had four people texting me about variable.
00:19:14 Yeah.
00:19:15 You want an offensive guy?
00:19:17 I get it, but that's a hard one to pass up on.
00:19:23 I feel like you say Mike Rabel, the Titans coach, I feel like he's going to end up in
00:19:28 new England.
00:19:29 Like, you know, that's why I haven't really, everybody that's texted me today about it.
00:19:35 I'm just like, nah, I feel like he'll end up going with craft in new England.
00:19:40 It's kind of custom fit for him to kind of be the heir apparent over there.
00:19:43 And so I haven't even really focused my attention on it.
00:19:45 I was more like hardball completes the story.
00:19:48 He finished the story.
00:19:49 He has nothing left to do in college sports right now.
00:19:53 He brought a national championship to his alma mater.
00:19:56 He defeated their biggest rival, Iowa, Alabama, and the runner up to the Heisman or whatever
00:20:04 in his last four games.
00:20:06 Like that's, that's pretty good stuff.
00:20:09 And now you get to go back to the NFL potentially, and you already have the highest win percentage
00:20:12 of any NFL coach that's ever existed.
00:20:15 I mean, it's set, like it's set.
00:20:17 He's coming back.
00:20:18 I just don't know where, but I keep saying the Chargers, but hey man, money talks.
00:20:23 I think the Chargers is actually a really good, if I'm looking for a head coaching job
00:20:28 and I get to choose.
00:20:31 You already got your quarter.
00:20:32 See, the Chargers job is looking real sexy.
00:20:35 That's what I was going to ask both of you, because this keeps coming up to me.
00:20:38 People could ask, and you know, with these open opportunities, the places that have a
00:20:43 quarterback already in place.
00:20:45 How often do you hear that about us?
00:20:48 That we have a quarterback in place.
00:20:49 So it makes it a destination that a coach will come to, which makes me kind of question,
00:20:52 well, how do these outside coaches feel about Bryson?
00:20:55 Like do you hear that very often in comparison to what both you guys just said about Justin
00:20:58 Herbert?
00:20:59 Like that's the, that's the reason you go there.
00:21:01 Right?
00:21:02 Yeah.
00:21:03 I mean, Justin Herbert obviously has more years under his belt.
00:21:05 I mean, he's on a second contract now, right?
00:21:07 So yeah.
00:21:08 Oh yeah.
00:21:09 There's a lot that he's already proven in the sense of, hey, this kid can play.
00:21:14 And though we think like Bryce Young is talented, like he's proven a lot this year, even though
00:21:22 considering the lack of protection he's had, targets to throw to, the changes on the coaching
00:21:31 staff.
00:21:32 I mean, everything you can ask for to go wrong happened for him this year and he stayed healthy.
00:21:40 He weathered the storm and he showed glimpses, man.
00:21:44 I mean, given the opportunities that he, that he's had.
00:21:48 So as far as like his ceiling, it's so high and that's what you're excited about if you're
00:21:55 a coach, because now you have a guy that you know has not even scratched like the beginnings
00:22:02 of a surface.
00:22:03 You know what I'm saying?
00:22:04 So like when you talk about the difference between, you know, a team that has a quarterback
00:22:12 and you know, and I guess, you know, a turnkey system, that's what the Chargers I think has.
00:22:23 Now when you look at the Carolina Panthers, this is a situation where you can come in
00:22:28 and say from like, no doubt about it, you coming in and you have your hands on the pottery.
00:22:36 You know what I'm saying?
00:22:37 You know, the making the pot, whatever you want to call it.
00:22:41 But like you have an opportunity to have your hands in the defense, offense, special teams,
00:22:47 coaching staff and say, you know what, I get a chance to put something special together.
00:22:53 And that's what you're looking at the Carolina Panthers as an opportunity.
00:22:59 And you're going to, and that's going to require a guy that has energy, that has, you know,
00:23:06 a dominance in, you know, the locker room, you know, an alpha mentality, like you guys
00:23:13 were saying.
00:23:14 It's going to require a lot.
00:23:17 That's for sure.
00:23:18 It's tough skin.
00:23:19 All of it.
00:23:20 I understand.
00:23:21 I understand all of that, but you didn't answer the question.
00:23:25 Is Bryce Young a quarterback that these coaches are going to look at as a franchise building
00:23:30 block going forward after what you just saw this year?
00:23:33 Before you even answer that, let me, let me just address this real quick.
00:23:36 Cause we're not the type where we are a podcast with the Carolina Panthers on the Believe
00:23:40 Network, right?
00:23:41 But we are not the type of podcast that will just let certain comments slide.
00:23:43 And I'm seeing a Nato Jenkins in the comments trying to get, and I ain't having it.
00:23:49 It's Tuesday.
00:23:50 The season's over.
00:23:51 Reason two and 15, bro.
00:23:52 Okay.
00:23:53 Look, I'm just letting you know, like, if you're going to say something, say something,
00:23:56 give me the question, give me the, whatever it is you think I'm not saying, go ahead and
00:23:59 say it.
00:24:00 It's okay.
00:24:01 Like we're all family here, but don't just be coming in.
00:24:02 I was Jenkins.
00:24:03 We can't even see his face.
00:24:04 Don't even start rolling up.
00:24:05 We don't do that here.
00:24:06 Like, all right, carry on.
00:24:07 Go ahead.
00:24:08 I don't think they have to look at it.
00:24:09 I think they have to look at it.
00:24:10 Go ahead.
00:24:11 I'm sorry.
00:24:12 I don't think they have to look at it as a franchise guy because they put so much into,
00:24:16 he's not going anywhere.
00:24:18 So you have to be sold on Bryce young, getting the guy or being the guy and being the one
00:24:26 that that turns his franchise around because they're not bringing in another quarterback
00:24:31 via trade as a veteran.
00:24:32 They're not drafting another one.
00:24:34 You've got to be the one that sold on this guy to make it work.
00:24:36 So yeah, he's got to be, they have to view this as that.
00:24:39 It's not like if say, say my dream comes true and Jim Carball comes in, it's not like he's
00:24:43 going to draft JJ McCaffrey or whatever.
00:24:44 And it's going to be a quarterback battle between him and Bryce young or whatever, whoever
00:24:47 takes the job is taking it with the idea that Bryce young is our, this is our dude we're
00:24:52 building around.
00:24:53 Like this is, this is it like, you know, Chicago situation where Justin Fields, he might work
00:24:58 out, but if not, we got, you know, first round draft pick to work with.
00:25:03 That's next year.
00:25:04 They do have one in 25, but you get my point.
00:25:08 We're not going to be moving off of Bryce young by 25.
00:25:11 That's just not happening.
00:25:12 And, and they don't, you know, it's all jokes.
00:25:14 So don't be running up on me in the, the Walmart or whatever, like we're questioning.
00:25:19 He actually like six, one he said, so you might get that.
00:25:28 I've never seen Skyler only listened to the podcast would have sworn.
00:25:33 He was a 50 year old man.
00:25:34 You got to, I mean, what's happening today?
00:25:38 He didn't follow it.
00:25:42 Love the show.
00:25:43 So I guess, yeah, it's a very mature voice.
00:25:47 That's what it is.
00:25:48 Thank you.
00:25:49 We used to use to play baseball, so you better be careful.
00:25:56 Yeah.
00:25:57 I got that arm right here.
00:25:58 So we are, I think we're all in agreeance.
00:26:03 Defensive player of the year is Derek Brown.
00:26:06 Offensive player of the year.
00:26:07 Is it you?
00:26:08 Oh, no question.
00:26:09 Maybe there's two of them because I'm centered on rewind.
00:26:17 We have to decide whether it's stealing or, Oh yeah.
00:26:21 I mean, it's gotta be feeling, you didn't catch over a hundred and I know one expected
00:26:25 that, like coming in here, like no one.
00:26:29 So I don't know, man, crap.
00:26:31 Cause he didn't run half the season.
00:26:33 So it has to be me.
00:26:34 Yeah, maybe it is.
00:26:35 That'd be feeling.
00:26:36 Yeah.
00:26:37 Feeling made it happen.
00:26:38 He gave us, he gave us some hope in a lot of games and so did Chuba, man.
00:26:42 I think one a one B Chuba and feeling bright spots.
00:26:47 I'm fine with that.
00:26:48 I'm fine with that.
00:26:49 Biggest breakout player, offense or defense.
00:26:51 Well, it'd have to be defense, right?
00:26:55 Yeah.
00:26:56 Yeah.
00:26:57 I mean, other than Chuba, I mean, Chuba kind of, well, Chuba was kind of doing this last
00:27:01 year.
00:27:02 So there's Derek Brown out because I mean, he was good, but he broke out last year.
00:27:07 He broke out last year.
00:27:08 Yeah.
00:27:09 We knew Derek Brown was a, we knew Derek Brown was Derek Brown.
00:27:13 We waited for him to go from here to here this year and he did.
00:27:16 Well, he went way up here.
00:27:17 I can't think of a single person on the offense.
00:27:22 Breakout player.
00:27:24 On defense.
00:27:25 Somebody like a Troy Hill or Sam Franklin or somebody like that.
00:27:32 I don't know about breakout, breakout, like, oh my gosh, he's going to be a part of this
00:27:38 thing long term.
00:27:39 But he tore out a nice season for a guy that went for three to three, four.
00:27:45 He's never played standing up.
00:27:48 And two, because he shut up.
00:27:51 He shut up some doubters too.
00:27:52 Early in the season, a lot of people doubted him and what he can do.
00:27:57 He took it.
00:27:58 He was quiet.
00:27:59 He worked.
00:28:00 He kept his head down during training camp.
00:28:01 And when his chance came, he came and he performed.
00:28:05 When I talked to him in training camp about all this, he was like as transparent as he
00:28:11 could be with these, like, like when I was going through all these footwork drills and
00:28:15 everything, it felt so weird to me.
00:28:18 He's like, I look lost.
00:28:20 And I can't remember if a coach actually said this or not that I talked to.
00:28:24 I can't remember because I had so much going on.
00:28:27 But it was like almost like a giraffe, baby giraffe.
00:28:30 You know what I mean?
00:28:31 Trying to find his way, trying to figure out how to walk.
00:28:34 And he figured it out pretty darn good because he became pretty, pretty solid in that role.
00:28:39 So I would say he tore, I guess, but I don't know.
00:28:44 That's yeah, that kind of sums up the season.
00:28:47 I guess you could say because of the like, because because we're struggling to figure
00:28:53 out a defensive guy, that's just the defense being what they've already worked.
00:28:57 Yeah, yeah.
00:28:58 They stayed the course.
00:29:01 What a there's a couple of choose from storyline of the year.
00:29:06 Ever.
00:29:10 My man went from like billionaire owner to like Marvel supervillain and like 15 weeks
00:29:18 like that's why I wanted to step back.
00:29:20 Because did you hear the thing that I haven't confirmed or where I saw it on Twitter?
00:29:25 Someone said that they're in good authority.
00:29:27 They know that what actually happened in that booth was that one of the Jaguar fans, the
00:29:32 guy you threw the drink on was actually making fun of I think was Marquis Haynes.
00:29:35 He had a concussion or something and he was on the field.
00:29:37 They had to get a stretcher for him and he was he was like, get up or make a fun of him
00:29:41 or whatever.
00:29:42 And there was a couple of expletives exchanged between Tepper and the fan and then eventually
00:29:46 Tepper do it through the drink.
00:29:47 Any truth to that?
00:29:48 Have you heard anything about that Skyler at all?
00:29:50 I have not heard a single thing on that whole thing.
00:29:52 And I'm assume that's false because it was on Twitter.
00:29:55 And so of course it's on Twitter.
00:29:56 Everybody's going to believe it.
00:29:58 And I was just like, if that's the case, why wouldn't you just said that when it happened?
00:30:01 Why would he gone through the whole thing about saying security and all this other
00:30:04 stuff?
00:30:05 But there was a fan booing my player.
00:30:07 He was on the ground getting on a stretcher and it was a fan booing and my emotions got
00:30:11 the best of me and I acted out unaccordingly and I apologize for my behavior.
00:30:15 That would have gotten him so many brownie points with the Panther fan base than what
00:30:19 actually got put out.
00:30:20 I do feel like we it's easy to attach this narrative to Tepper now that he is this meddling
00:30:27 owner when in actuality I feel like he just wants to win and he doesn't know how.
00:30:32 Like he's never done this before and he's a billionaire that's used to just getting
00:30:36 whatever he wants by putting money down.
00:30:38 And you can't do that in the NFL.
00:30:40 You can't just spend money and build a team like you could like in another league or whatever.
00:30:45 Like in what game do that and really any of the pro sports anymore like major league baseball.
00:30:49 You can't just build a team and expect to win.
00:30:51 You got a pretty good shot, but a lot of times there's so much more to it than that.
00:30:55 And I think he's starting to realize that through these different coaching changes,
00:30:58 roster moves and things of that sort.
00:31:00 And now the worries that they've given up so much roster wise trying to figure this
00:31:04 out.
00:31:05 They've dug so much of a hole like Skyler said that it's going to take a while to get
00:31:08 out of this.
00:31:09 Isn't going to be one of those things where like the Rams hire Sean McVay.
00:31:12 The Rams were horrible the year before to 18 months later, the Rams are in the Super
00:31:16 Bowl or whatever.
00:31:17 It's not going to be like that.
00:31:18 They had pieces kind of there or even if Jim Harbaugh comes here, it's not going to be
00:31:23 like when he went to San Francisco, people forget.
00:31:26 You want to say what you want to love our 12 games?
00:31:30 I think you're right.
00:31:31 He did because their defense had first and second rounders all up and down it because
00:31:34 they had sucked for like seven years.
00:31:36 So like that was the Mike Singletary years.
00:31:42 I need winners.
00:31:43 They can't win without him.
00:31:45 I need winners like that was those years.
00:31:47 That was the was the guy before him.
00:31:50 Tom's look.
00:31:51 You remember him?
00:31:52 Mike Tom's Lee wore the suit on the sidelines with somebody else in there too, but they
00:31:56 had a stretch where they don't win anything.
00:31:58 And then Harbaugh comes in and he's like, oh, I got a number one pick and Alex Smith
00:32:02 at quarterback.
00:32:03 I've got all these dudes on defense.
00:32:06 Patrick Willis.
00:32:07 What?
00:32:08 Like all these people on defense.
00:32:09 I've got a defensive line like everything's here.
00:32:11 I just need to implement what we do.
00:32:13 And I was watching that Michigan game last night and watching their offense.
00:32:17 Bro, I'm so in love with their all like all the pre snap movement they do.
00:32:21 They're moving like three tackles like they're literally shifting dudes over here and over
00:32:26 here.
00:32:27 They're all coming to one side and like there's all this stuff going on and it's all for the
00:32:30 run game.
00:32:31 All that's running.
00:32:32 Hey, let's load up the shotgun over here.
00:32:35 That direction.
00:32:36 Let's get another thing.
00:32:37 Another thing, too.
00:32:38 I noticed last night watching Michael Pennix Jr. from Washington because they were lined
00:32:43 up in shotgun majority of the time, too, last night.
00:32:46 But the thing I noticed, he was dropping back like he would drop back three, four steps
00:32:50 after he gets that shot.
00:32:51 It was so apparent like watching it and then thinking back to Bryce or Bryce wouldn't really
00:32:55 move it off that spot.
00:32:57 A lot of times I bet that offensive line for the Panthers, Icky in particular, had no idea
00:33:02 where Bryce Young was in the backfield on a lot of those sacks because he didn't drop
00:33:05 back far enough.
00:33:06 Like sometimes it's just as easy as that.
00:33:07 Like he just didn't get back far enough.
00:33:09 Their back is turned to him.
00:33:11 The defense can see where he is.
00:33:12 The offensive line cannot until everyone's run pass.
00:33:15 And how many pictures did we see on Twitter of freeze frames of our offensive line facing
00:33:20 Bryce Young and three dudes running at Bryce Young unabated, you know, two seconds into
00:33:26 the play or whatever, like some of that's kind of what's going on.
00:33:29 So you need somebody understands a run game and offensive line.
00:33:33 That's one of the reasons why I want horrible because he definitely everywhere he's been,
00:33:36 he has built the best offensive line and whatever league or conference or whatever.
00:33:42 He had the best on in San Francisco.
00:33:44 They weren't.
00:33:45 They just voted the best on college football this year.
00:33:47 Michigan.
00:33:48 Yeah.
00:33:49 So I mean, yeah.
00:33:50 And they looked like they look.
00:33:51 Washington looks like it would be.
00:33:53 They were all Washington, but like little boys out there.
00:33:57 And they've been they've been nice all year.
00:33:59 So like, yeah.
00:34:00 So I want somebody like that.
00:34:01 But I listen to this.
00:34:04 Washington has the best of them.
00:34:07 OK, yeah, I think you're right, because I think Michigan had last year and Washington
00:34:10 took it this year and Michigan came this game with like, oh, really?
00:34:14 OK, well, Michigan looked like they was definitely the big brother.
00:34:19 Yeah.
00:34:20 I saw people.
00:34:21 So people want Michigan looks like a SEC team that that bothers me so much.
00:34:25 Like, it's not like it's not like I would tell you why we mess up.
00:34:29 People act like the SEC is 15 really, really, really good teams.
00:34:33 It's not.
00:34:34 It's Alabama.
00:34:35 It's Georgia.
00:34:36 And then you have two more.
00:34:37 And that's kind of it.
00:34:38 That's it.
00:34:39 And there was like, oh, I see.
00:34:40 I believe what, though, man.
00:34:42 Listen, the big 10, man, that's another reason why I want to leave.
00:34:49 He might not be he might not be able to get to that level again because I'm going to see
00:34:52 the 18 teams, you know, Oregon, USC, UCLA, UCLA, the Pac-12 state.
00:35:01 Hey, look, probably the best season they had since like Reggie Bush was running around
00:35:07 USC for to be the last season for the Pac-12.
00:35:10 And they have a season like they like a lot of teams ranked like at one point the top
00:35:14 twenty five.
00:35:15 So, man, it wasn't the best man.
00:35:17 Listen, the best years was at least with Mario to Kenyon Barner.
00:35:22 Oh, yeah.
00:35:23 I guess it would be a little bit after.
00:35:24 Yes.
00:35:25 So that's what, 2014, 12, 13, somewhere in there.
00:35:29 Yeah.
00:35:30 Yeah.
00:35:31 Wait, wait.
00:35:32 He played Cam.
00:35:33 Then he played Cam in the national championship.
00:35:34 No, no, no, no.
00:35:35 That was a who was the quarterback at Oregon.
00:35:37 I almost said Bogan.
00:35:39 Darren Thomas.
00:35:40 That sounds right.
00:35:41 Yeah.
00:35:42 Yeah.
00:35:43 Yeah.
00:35:44 Yeah.
00:35:45 Yeah.
00:35:46 Yeah.
00:35:47 Man, let's get to the let's get to the Brian Burns comments because he there was two comments
00:35:51 a pool.
00:35:52 One is like directly, directly after the game.
00:35:57 This is from Alex Zitlow's Zitlow's Twitter.
00:36:01 And I don't know if I pronounce his last name right.
00:36:03 He's a writer from the observer.
00:36:05 And this is coming out of Burns Walker immediately after.
00:36:10 And he's basically sort of a mouse hate working.
00:36:12 He's talking about the camaraderie of the defense and how they're even though, you know,
00:36:17 they've gone through some troubles.
00:36:18 Brian Burns is yet to have a winning season here, if I'm not mistaken, since he was drafted.
00:36:22 Yeah.
00:36:23 Wow.
00:36:24 Yeah.
00:36:25 So he's gone through it and.
00:36:26 About to be on his fourth head coach.
00:36:30 Full time head coach.
00:36:31 Right.
00:36:32 And I commend him because he's always said the right thing.
00:36:35 You know what I mean?
00:36:36 In terms of whenever this question gets asked, which is like every week.
00:36:38 You kind of feel like the cracks are starting to fill in here a little bit.
00:36:42 The group that's around you and the guys that will be back.
