00:03 In Palestine, human rights organizations
00:10 denounce that the Israeli regime uses hunger
00:13 as a weapon of war in Gaza.
00:15 More than two million Palestinians
00:16 suffer from hunger due to Israeli police.
00:19 In Ecuador, authorities report the escape of another inmate
00:25 from Riobamba prison as violence escalates
00:28 and the government increases security deployment
00:31 throughout the country.
00:32 And in France, the Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne
00:38 presented her resignation.
00:39 Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:46 I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:49 We begin with the news.
00:51 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:54 More than two million Palestinians
01:07 are suffering from hunger as a direct result of Israel's
01:10 policy of depriving them of food in the Gaza Strip.
01:14 Through a report, the Israeli Information Center
01:17 for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories
01:19 detailed that the Gazans spend days and nights without being
01:23 able to consume food.
01:24 The document also points out that the inhabitants depend
01:28 entirely on supplies brought from outside
01:31 due to the crop fields, factories, and warehouses
01:34 destroyed by the Israeli occupation.
01:36 Furthermore, the Israeli army only
01:39 allowed a fraction of supplies to enter,
01:41 and it's classified as a war crime,
01:43 and the entity calls on the world to take urgent measures.
01:47 [AUDIO OUT]
01:51 Humanitarian organizations denounce
01:59 that at least 10 Palestinian children suffer amputations
02:03 every day as a result of the constant Israeli bombardment
02:06 on the Gaza Strip.
02:07 The organization Save the Children
02:09 highlights in a statement the recent UNICEF report
02:12 where it indicates that 1,000 minors in Gaza
02:16 lost one or both limbs as a result of the Israeli attacks.
02:21 In this regard, they indicated that the worsening health
02:24 crisis and the severe lack of medical supplies
02:27 forces doctors to amputate limbs,
02:29 sometimes without anesthetics, painkillers,
02:32 and through rapid procedures outside health facilities.
02:36 Meanwhile, on the 90th day of the genocide perpetrated
02:40 by Israel, the occupying forces continued these Tuesday
02:43 attacks against different points of the Gaza Strip.
02:46 The Israeli siege continues in the Gaza Strip.
02:52 Dozens of families of Israeli detainees
02:55 have headed to the crossroads of Karem Shalom
02:59 in the south of the Gaza Strip to prevent the humanitarian aid
03:02 entry in the coastal enclave until the war is stopped
03:05 and until the children are released.
03:08 Our correspondent Huda Hegasi with the details.
03:12 The Palestinian sources have assured
03:16 that today dozens of families of Israeli detainees,
03:20 of Israeli hostages who are here in the Gaza Strip,
03:23 have headed today in a convoy to the crossroads of Karem
03:27 Shalom, which is in the south of the Gaza Strip,
03:30 to prevent the humanitarian aid entry in the coastal enclave
03:34 until the war is stopped and until their children are
03:38 released since they have ensured that they fear
03:41 for the life of the Israeli hostage who
03:44 are in the Gaza Strip.
03:46 Since from the beginning of this Israeli atrocity,
03:49 at least 60 Israeli gringes have lost their life.
03:54 But due to the same missiles of the Israeli entity,
03:57 that is, Israel has been herself who, with her own missiles,
04:02 have been the one who has killed the hostage who
04:05 are here in the Gaza Strip.
04:07 These families are doing everything
04:09 possible to make this war stop to be
04:12 able to free their children.
04:14 But nevertheless, at this moment,
04:17 they have not been able to achieve anything.
04:20 They have gone out to several demonstrations
04:22 in Tel Aviv in the occupied territories,
04:25 asking Netanyahu, the prime minister Israeli,
04:27 to stop this war in the Gaza Strip
04:30 so that an exchange of prisoners is carried out.
04:34 But nevertheless, Netanyahu has assured
04:37 that he will continue the war.
04:40 He fears for the life of the Israeli hostage,
04:44 but that his main objective is to achieve military objective,
04:48 and therefore, the war should continue.
04:51 Therefore, the families of this hostage
04:54 have been seen in the obligation that they must do anything
05:00 to save the life of their children.
05:03 And today, they have decided to head
05:06 to the current Shalom border to pressure
05:08 either the Palestinian authorities
05:10 or the Israeli authorities that they will not
05:14 allow the Gaza Strip to be free until their children are
05:17 released.
05:18 With this, we can see how the families of these prisoners
05:23 are in the need, totally collapsed.
05:25 They have reached the maximum level of frustration
05:29 that they are willing to do anything
05:31 to make their children free.
05:33 Even two days ago, we heard that several of the families
05:37 of this Israeli hostage had also been directed to the Qatari
05:41 city to try to talk to the Egyptian intermediaries,
05:45 with the Qatari intermediaries, to pressure
05:48 Israel and the Palestinian resistance
05:51 to take an exchange of hostages.
05:53 But however, as we all know, these negotiations
05:57 between Israel and Hamas have been
05:59 stopped after the murder of Hamas leader, Saleh al-Rouri.
06:03 And therefore, they are trying to do everything possible
06:07 so that these negotiations return to stand up.
06:10 As I have said, these families have reached the maximum level.
06:15 They have reached their frustration.
06:16 And they are trying to do everything possible
06:19 to save the life of their children, who
06:22 have been put in danger here in the Gaza Strip
06:25 due to the same bombing of the army of Israel.
06:29 And this goes to encase.
06:33 During a biweekly United Nations press briefing,
06:36 representatives of the World Health Organization
06:38 based in Jerusalem and Gaza offered insight
06:41 into the desperate humanitarian crisis currently unfolding
06:45 in the Gaza Strip as the conflict between Israel
06:47 and the Hamas enters its fourth month.
06:51 Shrinking humanitarian space is evident.
06:53 We see evacuation orders in new areas every couple of days.
07:00 That means that those are areas that
07:02 are unsafe, where hostilities are actively underway.
07:06 We request coordination.
07:08 We coordinate with the parties to the conflict
07:11 that we can move safely.
07:12 And those requests have consistently,
07:16 for the last few days, been denied.
07:18 The food situation in the north is absolutely horrific.
07:21 There is almost no food available.
07:22 And everybody we talk to begs for food.
07:26 The food is just not--
07:28 there's not enough coming in.
07:30 And there's not enough to feed the two million people who
07:34 were in the Gaza Strip.
07:37 The government of Algeria called for the convening
07:39 of the United Nations Security Council
07:41 in view of the danger of Israel forcing
07:44 a mass exodus of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
07:48 As a non-permanent member of the organization,
07:51 Algeria suggested holding a session on January 12
07:54 to address the threat of forced eviction.
07:57 In recent weeks, several Israeli officials,
08:00 including national security and finance officials
08:02 Itamar Ben-Vir and Ben-Salel Smotrish, respectively,
08:07 have called for evicting the Palestinians from the Gaza
08:10 Strip and populating the territory
08:12 with Israeli settles.
08:14 According to the United Nations, 1.9 million Gazans
08:18 have been displaced inside the besieged Palestinian enclave.
08:21 The government of Iran denounced on Tuesday
08:28 that the assassinations carried out
08:30 by Israel against journalists in Palestine
08:33 revealed not only their crime, but the fear
08:35 of being judged by the people of the world.
08:38 Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdelalian
08:42 explored the killing of more than 100 journalists
08:45 by the Israeli occupation forces
08:47 while they were covering the genocide in the Gaza Strip,
08:50 an unprecedented number in the history.
08:53 Tehran's Foreign Minister stressed
08:55 Israel's fears of the knowledge and judgment
08:58 of the peoples of the world of the atrocities committed
09:01 in the Gaza Strip, where more than 23,000 Palestinians
09:05 have been killed.
09:06 The top Iranian diplomat expressed his condolences
09:09 to the families of the slain Gaza journalists,
09:12 especially the so-called hero journalist who
09:15 lost all members of his family, including
09:17 a journalist's son in the Israeli attacks
09:20 on the Gaza Strip.

09:44 In Ecuador, authorities reported the escape
09:46 of another inmate from the Riobamba prison
09:49 in response to this government's increased security deployment
09:53 throughout the country.
09:54 The major of the municipality of Riobamba, John Vinoesa,
09:57 informed that Fabricio Colon, leader of the Wolves,
10:01 was recently arrested by order of the prosecutor Diana Salazar.
10:05 Vinoesa assured that of the 39 arrested,
10:08 12 were recaptured by police authorities.
10:11 In response to this escalation, the national executive
10:14 increased the presence of law enforcement agents
10:17 in the most affected municipalities
10:19 of the South American country.
10:20 Ecuador's Ministry of Education, in the face of the prison
10:28 crisis sweeping the country, suspended classes
10:32 to avoid endangering the lives of students and teaching staff.
10:35 The ministry informed that the necessary measures are
10:38 being taken to ensure the safety of educational communities,
10:42 as well as the continuity of learning.
10:44 Educational authorities are working
10:46 with national police and governors
10:48 to determine the possible risk of two
10:50 educational institutions.
10:52 The major of the metropolitan district of Quiro,
10:59 Pavel Muñoz, requested the national government
11:02 to militarize the strategic installations of the city
11:05 to warranty their operation.
11:07 The major recalls in his message that the country and Quiro
11:11 are working through an unprecedented security crisis.
11:14 Muñoz demands all the protection of the state, the government,
11:18 and its security forces to safeguard the right to life.
11:21 The major indicated that after completing the meeting
11:24 to evaluate the current situation,
11:27 he decided that all agencies of the municipality of Quiro
11:30 increase their presence in public spaces
11:33 and are ready to intervene in coordination
11:35 with the government in case of incidents.
11:38 Muñoz assured that he will enforce security
11:40 in critical areas and public services of the city.
11:43 Panama commemorates Martes Day in honor
11:51 of the popular march of January 9, 1964,
11:54 against the presence of US troops.
11:57 That day, some 200 students rallied
11:59 to defend the flag in the canal zone ceded to the US.
12:03 The military responded with fire.
12:05 Hundreds of young people were wounded,
12:07 and more than 20 were killed.
12:09 The action led to a decisive turning point
12:12 in the relations between the Isthmus and Washington.
12:16 Panamanian authorities and several organizations
12:19 will carry out several acts to remember the date.
12:22 Some 200 students rallied to defend the flag
12:25 in the canal zone ceded to the US.
12:27 Military responded with fire, as we said.
12:30 The Venezuelan National Assembly unanimously
12:42 approved the draft resolution by which the passage
12:45 to the national pantheon of Brigadier General Domingo
12:48 Antonio Sifontes is consented.
12:51 During the first ordinary session
12:53 of the Venezuelan Parliament in 2024,
12:56 the Venezuelan deputies honored General Domingo Antonio
12:58 Sifontes on the 112th anniversary of his death.
13:02 As part of the agenda of the Venezuelan Assembly,
13:05 it was agreed to honor General Domingo Sifontes as Fatherland's
13:09 hero.
13:10 At the end of the session, the president
13:12 of the National Assembly invited the parliamentarian
13:16 to participate in the homage to the hero in his transit
13:19 to the national pantheon.
13:21 This agreement is contemplated in the Article 187,
13:25 number 15 of the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic
13:28 of Venezuela, which grants the National Assembly the power
13:31 to grant the honors of the national pantheon
13:34 to illustrious Venezuelans who have rendered eminent services
13:38 to the Republic.
13:38 Of a military man trained in our army, and at the same time,
13:48 a man of letters, an intellectual,
13:50 who was called by Mario Briseño Iragorri,
13:53 the Quixote of nationality, who was also known
13:56 as the Terror of the English, for what they humbly
13:59 called the Cuyuni incident.
14:01 But it was nothing more than a real battle,
14:03 as mentioned by our president, Nicolás Maduro,
14:06 who took prisoners in the English commander
14:08 and other criminals who were taken to Puerto Ordaz
14:11 to answer to the justice of Venezuela.
14:15 Likewise, Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez
14:18 said that the demonstrations on the campaign for the Ezequiel
14:21 reflect the patriotism of General Sifontes.
14:26 These recent demonstrations of patriotism,
14:29 expressing the operational activity
14:30 of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces on our Atlantic coast,
14:34 in a teacher who teaches his students
14:37 the greatness of Venezuela, in a child who paints
14:40 our national flag in our Ezequiel,
14:42 in citizens that expressed their will
14:44 to recover the stolen territory in the consultative referendum
14:48 on December 3rd, perfectly match one
14:50 of the great recommendations that General Sifontes gave
14:54 me his lifetime for the following years.

15:21 Welcome back to From the South.
15:27 In France, the French Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne,
15:30 presented her resignation, which was
15:32 accepted by the president of the country, Emmanuel Macron.
15:36 Borne, 62, served as Prime Minister of France
15:39 since May 16th, 2022, being the second woman to hold
15:43 the post after Edith Kressen.
15:45 Through his account on the social media
15:47 X, the president thanked the minister for her performance.
15:51 In this regard, the Elysee Palace
15:53 announced that the Prime Minister, together
15:55 with the members of her cabinet, will
15:58 continue to deal with the current problems
16:00 until the appointment of a new government.
16:02 Earlier, local media reported that Borne's possible successors
16:06 would include Defense Minister Chief Sébastien Lecornu,
16:10 Finance Minister--
16:12 Ministry Chief Bruno Le Maire, as well as Environment Minister
16:15 Christopher Betschu.
16:17 However, President Emmanuel Macron
16:18 appointed Gabriel Attal, Minister of Public Actions
16:21 and Accounts, as the new Prime Minister.
16:23 As soon as the appointment of Gabriel Attal
16:32 as the new Prime Minister of France became official,
16:35 deputies from across the political spectrum
16:37 reacted in the main hall of the National Assembly.
16:41 Basically, he's a new avatar succeeding an old avatar.
16:44 And Emmanuel Macron is, in a way, succeeding himself.
16:48 What does the appointment mean?
16:50 Given that we have seen the President of the Republic praise
16:52 the departure of his Prime Minister, who clearly fulfilled
16:55 the task he entrusted her, is it about getting a new majority?
17:00 I don't think so.
17:01 Is it to get a new line?
17:03 I don't think so either.
17:04 [SPEAKING FRENCH]
17:19 France experienced one of its coldest days in six years.
17:23 Normandy and the D-Day landing beaches
17:27 woke up to a thin layer of snow between 3 and 5 centimeters,
17:31 causing some transport disruptions
17:33 and a lack of traders in markets.
17:35 French authorities temporarily closed two highways on Tuesday,
17:39 as authorities scrambled to deploy salt trucks
17:42 and towed vehicles after a cold snap hit the country.
17:46 Transport Minister Clement Baunet
17:48 argued that the National Weather Agency had not
17:51 predicted snow overnight.
17:53 Thermometers across the country are
17:55 forecast to drop below zero degrees Celsius on Tuesday,
17:58 except in a small swath of southeastern France,
18:02 according to the National Weather Bureau.
18:03 In Belgium, authorities initiated plans
18:11 to help homeless people over the winter on Monday.
18:14 Working with homeless organizations,
18:16 the plans aim to provide optimal shelter for the people
18:19 in Brussels to get through the winter safely.
18:22 The extreme cold plan allows organizations
18:25 operating underground to open new shelters for the homeless.
18:29 In total, 145 additional places with a capacity of 100 people
18:35 will be provided on top of the existing shelters in Brussels.
18:38 They will be open for a month, 24 hours a day,
18:41 and will welcome applicants for a week,
18:44 while this storm, which can be extremely
18:46 dangerous for the people on the streets, passes.
18:49 Several organizations will meet on Thursday
18:51 to agree on measures and discuss increasing the number of places
18:55 in existing shelters.
18:57 Some shelters are already at capacity.
18:59 In Japan, authorities are urging people
19:07 to take extreme precautions in the face of a rain and snowstorm
19:11 that has hit the country after the 7.6 magnitude
19:14 earthquake on January 1st.
19:16 The Nara Peninsula and its surroundings
19:18 are experiencing persistent seismic activity
19:21 with about a week that the earthquake that have left
19:27 at least 180 people dead.
19:29 Meteorological authorities are urging caution,
19:32 as the storm could cause landslides and avalanches,
19:35 or lead to the collapse of already unstable houses.
19:38 Caution also applies to 28,000 people
19:42 who remain displaced and the thousands of households
19:45 that continue to experience power outages in freezing
19:48 temperatures.
