Kiambu Golf Club has opened its doors to the public as a way of encouraging more people to join the club to end the stigma of the sport belonging just to the elite.

00:00 We've already done the handing over.
00:07 This is now handed over to the board of Kiabukof Club for the year 2024.
00:21 We agree that we won't again close this club.
00:25 And we've had a problem maybe with other lanes, that people within this facility think that
00:33 this club is just for elite.
00:35 Now we want to open this club up so that members of the public in a while will be able to come
00:42 and patronise the club at a very reasonable rate.
00:46 We are going to encompass the municipality schools which are within Kiabukof municipality
00:53 where this club is domiciled to ensure that the schools within this municipality, most
00:58 of the primary schools, children from those primary schools who would wish to major in
01:04 playing golf, we are able to support them.
01:08 But this one cannot be done by the club alone because of the limited resources.
01:12 We are going to go forward and get in touch with the area MP through the national government
01:19 and the governor through the county government.
01:21 So that hand in hand we'll be able to bring those schools on board.
01:26 Our focus is really on the youth because we want to see a transition from one age to another,
01:34 I mean the next age group.
01:36 So we are focusing so much on the youth as a future of the club.
01:41 We are having continuous membership drives, giving subsidised rates to encourage more
01:49 people to join the club and remove the stigma, as the chairman has said, of a club membership
01:55 being from the elite.
01:56 Golf is a game, like any other game, it's a revenue generator and it can become a game
02:01 changer for those who really take part in doing what is supposed to be done.
02:05 As we prepare to have more youth coming in, it helps for ladies to be players because
02:10 mothers are more likely to bring in the children to play.
02:13 I think we've seen that more evident now with the lady director heading the children's arm
02:21 of the club and it's been very successful.
02:24 We had quite a number of children come in to play and the numbers are growing as their
02:31 mothers play.
02:32 Also the women population in the club has really, really increased.
02:36 We've got so many activities for the women.
02:38 We had Haiti, a very successful event just a few weeks ago, actually last week, so it
02:44 was very successful and we are going to have very many events for the women, both members
02:49 and non-members, in trying to entice them to come and join us.
