00:00 snow days can be a lot of fun,
00:02 but they can also be a great opportunity
00:04 to learn outside of the classroom.
00:06 The questions we always get.
00:08 Why am I learning this?
00:10 Why does this matter?
00:11 When will I ever need this?
00:13 And so using this as an opportunity
00:15 away from school as a vehicle
00:17 for learning more about the world
00:19 puts him in a mindset that there's
00:21 always something to be learned
00:22 within their grasp. There are
00:24 many STEM activities that can keep
00:26 kids entertained while still
00:27 learning on snow days. So let's
00:29 start with sledding.
00:30 So everyone loves sledding.
00:31 Hopefully you have access to a
00:33 small hill nearby your home.
00:35 Time how long it takes to sled down the hill.
00:37 You can use the distance from the
00:39 top of the hill to the bottom and
00:42 the time to calculate various speeds.
00:43 Feet per second, miles per hour.
00:45 Have your child measure the
00:47 depth of snow using a ruler.
00:48 Encourage them to record their
00:50 measurements and create a chart.
00:51 To get even convert their measurements
00:53 from inches to feet or inches and
00:55 centimeters. If you'd rather stay indoors,
00:57 cooking and baking can also be
00:58 educational. Older children can
01:00 learn by doubling or tripling a recipe.
01:01 Even if you don't do that,
01:03 if a recipe calls for two cups of sugar,
01:06 how many half cups would that be?
01:08 How many quarter cups would that be?
01:10 How many third of a cups would that be?
01:12 When snow is in the forecast,
01:14 research activities ahead of time
01:15 that align with what your kids
01:17 are learning at school.
01:18 It will help them get the
01:20 most out of their snow day.
01:21 The activities that I outlined
01:23 didn't require a lot of materials,
01:24 but you still want to start the day off,
01:27 so it might require a few
01:29 supplies for you to have together.
01:30 You're prepared and ready to go to have
01:32 a really great day with your child
01:34 for Accuweather. I'm Emmy Victor.
