Toll board: One RFID system for MPTC, SMC tollways to begin by July

Using 2 RFIDs for different expressways can be confusing. The Toll Regulatory Board says that beginning July, you have the choice to use just 1 RFID for the 12 expressways of San Miguel Corporation and Metro Pacific.

Our correspondent Rex Remitio has the details.

00:00 For toll-waste users, they have one account and an RFID tag attached to their vehicle.
00:08 Soon, motorists only have to use one RFID for the expressways of SMC Tollways and Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation or MPTC.
00:18 Authorities say the implementation of so-called "One Wallet, One RFID" system will soon be on full blast on the 12 expressways.
00:27 This means only one RFID needs to be loaded with credits for use on all expressways.
00:34 The new system will cover Autoswip RFID users on SLEX, Star Tollway, NIAX, Skyway, Skyway Stage 3, T-PLEX, and MCX.
00:45 And the EZ Trip RFID users on NLEX, SCTEX, Cavitex, Calax, and C5 Southlink.
00:53 "If you have an account on the NLEX or MPTC side, you need to have your own account.
01:01 On the San Miguel side, you also have Autoswip and the other one.
01:06 So now, you only have one. You only have one wallet and one RFID."
01:10 Test runs will start on Wednesday. By July, the system will be simultaneously implemented on the tollways.
01:18 This is part of the Toll Regulatory Board's goal of going 100% cashless on all tollways to get rid of long lines along toll plazas.
01:28 Registration is free and can be done online.
01:32 "You don't have to queue along the old system. We can still go to the stations.
01:38 We saw the problem before with the previous administration."
01:43 Drivers like Nelson and Dennis welcome the new system, saying it will save them time
01:48 as they only have to buy load credits for just one RFID.
01:53 "For me, it's okay. If one has a load and the other doesn't, I can go anywhere."
01:59 "It's better to have one RFID so that it's just one fare, not to separate."
02:07 The TRD is urging both SMC Tollways and MPTC to provide motorists with marketing incentives,
02:13 like giveaways and discounts, to encourage motorists to go cashless.
02:18 "If we don't go cashless, the line to our tollways will get longer."
02:25 The toll operators have yet to issue a statement regarding the new scheme.
02:30 They both belong to a technical working group preparing for the upcoming launch.
02:35 Nelson, meanwhile, hopes toll firms can also address other concerns,
02:40 like RFIDs that become unreadable at toll plazas.
02:44 He believes dealing with these issues would save everyone more time
02:48 and help them arrive at their destination even faster.
