Bengals DE Myles Murphy on Learning from Veterans, Preparing for Browns & More
Transcript
00:00 Okay, Miles, week 18, the final game of the season.
00:04 First, I just want to know like what you have learned so far in your rookie year
00:08 that you can take into future years as a Bengal?
00:11 I guess really like just an accumulation of just all the information that I gained
00:19 from the vets, all of my other teammates and my coaches of just learning the position
00:24 and then I guess when it comes to pass rushing, how to I guess differentiate your moves,
00:31 how to I guess set up different moves and then I guess to run, how to just read different backfield sets,
00:38 you know, how to I guess getting more detailed when it comes to watching film.
00:46 I thought I was good with watching film coming out of college,
00:48 but it was some like small things that I really never looked at until I got here.
00:54 So those are probably the biggest things that I'll probably take into my later years in my career.
01:01 What kind of changes did you make?
01:02 What did you notice I guess from watching film in college to going pro?
01:11 Really just biggest tendencies.
01:14 I guess tendencies when it comes to the O.C. and like when that O.C. likes to, you know,
01:22 go for a shot or different things like that because generally I was thinking,
01:27 okay when the offense goes, makes a good game on first down and it's like second and two or second and one,
01:34 that's when I like to throw shots, but not every team is like that.
01:37 So I guess really just learning the O.C. and then your I guess one-on-one hand battles,
01:43 like when you're off the line, what does he like to go back to when he gets tired, things like that.
01:49 Or when it's crunch time and he needs to make a block, what does he like to do?
01:54 I guess small things like that that I never really paid attention to in college
01:58 that I now kind of honed in on talking to the older guys, see what they look at.
02:04 You kind of sound like Pratt and Away because he always talks about how he watches film
02:07 and he always talks about how he goes back to what their tendencies are when they're under pressure
02:11 that you just go back to what you're used to or what you're comfortable with.
02:14 I also want to know, is there anyone in the locker room that you've learned the most from?
02:18 Can you pinpoint any one person?
02:20 Honestly, it would be between Trey and Sam, honestly.
02:23 I guess when it comes to just learning the playbook, Sam.
02:28 When I guess specifically pass rushing, it would be Trey.
02:31 So that's like the mix of the two.
02:33 So it's been a good mix between those two and then of course, honestly everyone on the D-line
02:37 has chipped in a little bit, well of course my coach, but everyone on the D-line has chipped in,
02:43 but probably those two probably the most.
02:46 What are you looking forward to as far as facing the Browns?
02:49 Obviously you guys are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs,
02:53 but there could be a situation where every single team in your division finishes with a winning record.
02:59 That's kind of crazy to think about.
03:01 Yeah, I was about to say that we still think our division is probably the best division,
03:07 toughest division for sure, but honestly going into this week we're still preparing the same,
03:13 still going out to win.
03:15 That's our mission, that's what it's been every week.
03:20 Our plan and expectation is to just dominate our matchup every down.
03:25 Do you expect a heavy workload on Sunday?
03:30 I don't know, hard to say, but honestly I go into every week just about the same,
03:37 just preparation when it comes to the playbook, our plan, what my matchup is,
03:42 and I guess what my workload is.
03:45 I prepare my body as if I'm playing 60, 70 snaps, and however many snaps that I do get is what I get.
03:54 So I'm just preparing myself for the most right now.
03:58 How do you prepare your body?
04:00 I know some guys are slower to get into the cold tub, or I don't know,
04:04 some guys do cupping or kneeling or whatever they do.
04:06 What do you do to prepare your body for an NFL game?
04:09 Really, honestly similar to what I did in college, which one, stick to your routine.
04:14 It's easy to sway away and get comfortable and I guess stop getting in the cold tub,
04:20 stop getting in the sauna, whatever you do, but I try to keep a schedule.
04:26 It's easier when it's a Sunday game so you can easily set up your things throughout the week,
04:31 but of course when it's like Saturday, Monday night, Thursday night games,
04:35 that's when it kind of gets sticky.
04:37 But since it's a Sunday game, it's easy with massages.
04:42 I always stick with the cold tub when it's a hard practice, a tough practice.
04:46 It's week 18, everyone has bumps and bruises,
04:50 so a cold tub is something that you probably should get in.
04:55 So, I mean, the biggest thing is just stick to your routine,
04:58 stick to things that you've been doing since week one.
05:01 So that's probably the biggest thing that I took from college to the NFL now.
05:07 It sounds like a good routine you have.
05:10 Looking at Sunday, I mean, obviously a team like the Browns,
05:13 who already have their playoff spot locked in, they tend to rest a lot of their starters,
05:18 but if Joe Flacco does play, what have you noticed about his tendencies on offense?
05:25 Well, he's a very veteran guy.
05:27 I remember growing up, I guess when he was on the Ravens,
05:33 but when I heard he was going to the Browns and he had a breakout game, I was just like,
05:38 "Oh, shoot, he's playing like he was in the Super Bowl when they were playing the 49ers."
05:42 I remember watching--I don't know how long ago that was, but I was not in college.
05:47 I don't know if I was in high school yet, but I just remember watching that game.
05:53 That was when the Jacoby Jones, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed--I don't know if they're all Hall of Famers yet,
06:00 but those type of guys.
06:02 So, yeah, he's a veteran guy.
06:04 He's seen the game.
06:05 He's been in the NFL for a long time, so he knows what's going on.
06:10 With him, I guess with quarterbacks that are veteran quarterbacks like him, he's seen a thousand looks.
06:19 So I guess the biggest thing is try not to show exactly what you're doing with him.
06:23 So, yeah, he's really just one of the better quarterbacks in the league right now.
06:31 He's been kind of blowing up, so, yeah, we've got to lock in, that's for sure.
06:37 Last question for you.
06:38 Obviously I heard that it is your birthday, Mr. 22.
06:41 How do you celebrate your birthday?
06:44 After practice, going out to a dinner.
06:48 But I think we're probably going to do, I guess, a bigger celebration after the game or after the season.
06:55 So, yeah, who knows.
06:57 I know right now I'm going to a dinner, but we may do something else sometime later.
07:02 Awesome.
07:03 Good luck on Sunday.
07:04 Appreciate it.
