00:00 Around 5 o'clock last night, three people were swept out to sea at Park Beach in Coffs
00:07 Harbour.
00:08 It's believed those three people were family members, one woman and two children.
00:13 One of the children, a young boy, has now been hospitalised while the woman died at
00:18 the scene.
00:19 It's one of 35 drownings that have occurred across Australia since December 1st.
00:24 We received calls to triple zero to three people caught in a rip.
00:28 The Coffs Harbour lifeguards were responded to that location.
00:32 When they got there, two persons were out of the water but unfortunately one person
00:36 was still unconscious in the water, a 50-year-old female.
00:39 To the best efforts of the lifeguards up there, they weren't able to revive that lady.
00:44 There's expected to be a surge in beachgoers as we hit the middle of summer.
00:48 In light of this, the New South Wales Government has announced today that they'll be deploying
00:52 14 new jet skis to beaches across the state.
00:56 Jet skis were involved in about 13% of beach rescues last year.
01:00 A jet ski may be based at a patrolled beach and just a little bit further down there may
01:04 be a beach that's unpatrolled.
01:06 You know, that beacon could be touched, for example, at the unpatrolled beach and a jet
01:10 ski could be out there in a matter of moments.
01:12 The ability to move really quickly, the ability to tow people and the ability to provide better
01:17 first aid as quickly as possible will be the difference between life and death.
01:21 As always, Surf Lifesaving is urging people to only swim at patrolled beaches and to always
01:27 stay within the red and yellow flags.
