00:00 Explosions lit up the morning sky over Kiev on Tuesday, as Russia targeted the Ukrainian
00:07 capital with a barrage of missiles.
00:10 One struck in front of an apartment building, leaving behind a massive crater and destruction
00:15 all around.
00:16 WOMAN (through translator): I was outside, on the other side of the building, and I saw
00:20 the explosion and the red flames and then the smoke.
00:24 I ran and saw that all the windows of the building had been blown out.
00:27 And then the smoke started to come out.
00:30 In the aftermath, rescue workers frantically combed through the rubble, searching for survivors.
00:36 They emerged, carrying one person to safety.
00:40 It was one of five areas of the capital struck by Russian missiles on Tuesday.
00:45 Kiev's mayor came to the site to survey the damage.
00:48 MAN (through translator): This is another brutal attack on our city.
00:53 You can see a large crater is behind me.
00:55 A rocket fragment landed just 10 meters from a house.
00:59 The whole apartment block has been damaged.
01:01 IAN STAVROPOULOS, Ukrainian President (through translator): Ukraine's second largest city,
01:04 Kharkiv, was also left reeling from deadly strikes on Tuesday, with Russian missiles
01:09 hitting the city's center.
01:11 Children were among the dozens who were injured.
01:14 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the nation's air defenses prevented a higher
01:18 death toll.
01:19 VOLODYMYR ZELENSKY, Ukrainian President (through translator): The Russians launched about 100
01:22 missiles of different kinds.
01:23 At least 70 were shot down, almost 60 of them in the Kiev area.
01:27 IAN STAVROPOULOS: The escalation by Moscow began on Friday, with Russia's largest single
01:33 attack on Ukraine since the war started almost two years ago.
01:37 And Tuesday's barrage followed promises by Vladimir Putin that a Ukrainian attack on
01:41 the Russian border city of Belgorod, blamed on Kiev, and which killed more than two dozen
01:47 people, would not go unpunished.
