00:00 Hi everybody welcome back to
00:06 sports illustrated span nation
00:08 Las Vegas Raiders insider
00:10 podcast it. Is game day here we
00:16 go Raider nation taking on the
00:19 Colts I'm here in Indy
00:21 obviously got the background
00:23 because it's the Raider
00:24 background I'm not at the
00:25 stadium yet but I'm here in
00:27 Indy for the game brought the
00:28 Colts and as always joined by
00:31 my main man the great the one
00:34 and only Johnny shop Johnny you
00:36 were going to open with a riff
00:38 at the fans request but we were
00:40 having some audio issues we're
00:42 going to get that fixed somehow
00:43 but you will be coming on with
00:45 a riff at some time is already
00:47 to go we just couldn't get it
00:49 to connect through the
00:51 microphone I was already there
00:52 I got something written just
00:53 for the show a week seventeen
00:55 special if you will we'll carry
00:57 it out. I'm excited to see
01:00 everybody else everybody is
01:01 ready to go week seventeen and
01:03 there's still plenty of things
01:05 right now there's still plenty
01:06 to play for. What we agree so
01:09 John I want to go back. And
01:11 Kansas city I predicted the win.
01:15 It kind of just played out the
01:17 way I thought I thought the
01:18 offense would be a little bit
01:19 better but there were a couple
01:21 things that went into that
01:23 number one they got the lead
01:25 and AP said afterwards I didn't
01:27 know what to do. So the plate
01:29 calling changed a little bit at
01:30 the behest of the coach that's
01:32 not all on a- that I'm not
01:34 pretending that he played great
01:35 or that you know there were
01:37 dropped passes that should have
01:38 been caught but the point of the
01:40 matter was they got the win.
01:42 How monster was that for the
01:46 Raiders first then AP and champ
01:49 Kelly. Well about twenty eight
01:52 million or so I think saw it on
01:54 broadcast nine yeah I mean
01:56 that's a lot of money for a
01:57 game that's a lot of money for
01:59 an audience. It's hard to think
02:02 of anything bigger this is
02:04 really the biggest thing that
02:06 you could probably do on the
02:07 schedule I'll give you an
02:08 example if the Raiders somehow
02:10 made the playoffs but lost the
02:12 game to the Chiefs and then
02:13 lost in the first round of the
02:14 playoffs I would argue that
02:16 beating the Chiefs might have
02:17 been nearly just as big or
02:19 bigger. Here they do it you did
02:21 say that this was possible we
02:23 did talk a bit about the idea
02:24 that had to be probably a game
02:26 that was a little bit more
02:27 competitive. But I think that
02:29 the Chiefs were good enough to
02:30 beat themselves the Raiders did
02:33 more to get ahead and get
02:35 control of the game and I think
02:36 what you're talking about is
02:38 there was a change on the fly
02:39 if you will of how do we want
02:41 this game to go from here. So
02:43 it was really. Impressive I
02:45 don't think anybody could have
02:47 expected it what you pointed
02:49 out was the possibility and how
02:50 it could happen and that you
02:51 thought Hey I think this is
02:52 going to happen. But when you
02:54 see it in real time it's like
02:56 a game that's going to happen
02:57 and it's not a competitive
02:58 game it's a marketing line not
03:00 a competitive prediction but
03:03 still the point is. It looked
03:05 like on paper and in theory
03:08 here you go holiday game in
03:10 Kansas City all the Chiefs are
03:11 gonna kind of go back to be
03:13 what the Chiefs were this one
03:15 kind of stamped out for sure
03:18 that the Chiefs of twenty
03:19 twenty three are not like the
03:20 Chiefs that we've seen in the
03:21 past. In the- Las Vegas Raiders
03:25 like anything we've seen since
03:27 they've moved to Las Vegas so
03:28 far. This is really something
03:31 that can be used as a
03:32 springboard. Let's see what
03:34 they can do there's a really
03:36 good chance that they could
03:38 finish with three wins in a
03:40 road to end the regular season.
03:43 Right within would would make
03:44 my nine and eight prediction
03:45 come true switch. It's just
03:48 been an amazing season so John
03:50 I. Have been very open. Very
03:53 emphatic- I think that AP and
03:57 champ Kelly have earned the job
03:59 and should be hired. I think
04:01 you give a three year proof it
04:03 deal. You you bring a man and
04:05 tell me that you're going to
04:06 get the entire three years. If
04:09 at any time in the three years
04:10 you make the playoffs. Or if
04:13 they make the playoffs this
04:14 year. It instantly becomes a
04:16 five year deal at ten million
04:19 per. I just think that's the
04:22 right thing to do. I think
04:24 they've earned it it's what the
04:26 players want. It is time for
04:29 the NF I mean for Mark Davis to
04:32 you know. Really I think he
04:34 made a vital mistake in not
04:36 hiring rich Versace. And I
04:38 think it's a time to make it
04:40 right- I know there's some
04:42 people that say no you wait.
04:45 Until you know what if they
04:47 lose the last two games that's
04:48 irrelevant to me. I have no
04:51 doubt this team is going to
04:53 compete. I have no doubt that
04:55 they've gotten better. To me
04:57 you go ahead and make that
04:58 statement I think it rallies
04:59 the troops even more. I had one
05:02 player whose name I have not
05:03 given up that said to me. You
05:06 know. After the game. Why don't
05:09 you just hire him come on it's
05:10 Christmas. And I think that
05:13 there's no doubt that to the
05:14 players want. I think dragging
05:16 it on is not a good thing. You
05:18 go ahead and do it do you
05:19 disagree with me do you disagree
05:21 with me do you think you wait
05:22 till two more games do you
05:23 think they've done enough now
05:25 are you not convinced what do
05:26 you think. I think they've
05:29 probably done enough. But part
05:32 of the reason is I don't
05:33 remember in interim situation
05:36 quite like this where the coach
05:38 the general manager actually.
05:40 Did something maybe this is the
05:42 first of its kind with an
05:44 interim coach that right away
05:45 makes a change- with the
05:46 offensive. Who's gonna.
05:48 Basically who's gonna call the
05:49 offense what kind of offense
05:51 they're gonna call. We've seen
05:52 a couple of moves from the
05:54 general manager acquiring
05:55 talent. We've seen some actual.
05:59 Interim work where is usually
06:01 we just see somebody who jumps
06:03 on a cruise liner and has to
06:05 try to steer it the best they
06:06 can a lot of times through some
06:08 big waves and there's really
06:09 nothing that can be done. So in
06:11 this case if you're saying well
06:12 I really don't know what
06:13 they're gonna do. Because of
06:15 the amount of time that these
06:16 guys have had because of the
06:18 actual work that they've done I
06:19 think you go ahead and name
06:21 them. The head coach in the
06:23 general manager I'm not sure
06:24 timing wise it matters too
06:26 much I think that there is a
06:28 Super Bowl coming to Las Vegas
06:30 it's odds on beyond belief that
06:32 the Vegas Raiders will not be
06:34 in it. At the same time there's
06:36 a lot of thunder that could be
06:37 stolen at the right time during
06:39 that Super Bowl build up to
06:41 make this big announcement
06:42 something tells me that's
06:43 probably what they're gonna do
06:44 and maybe it makes some sense.
06:46 Now on Mark Davis I learned
06:48 earlier this week that he and I
06:50 were both at the Mandalay Bay
06:53 Eddie Trunk fortieth anniversary
06:55 rock and roll show a couple
06:56 weeks ago on a Monday night. So
06:58 for those folks that think this
06:59 guy is not out about turns out
07:00 he was right there in the house
07:01 of blues. Enjoying some eighties
07:04 rock. Like I did. I'm sure
07:07 he'll be busy during the Super
07:08 Bowl but keep that in the back
07:09 your mind I'm sure it's already
07:11 in a lot of fans minds I think
07:12 they want to tee this up to be
07:13 announced at that time. I think
07:16 that's waiting way too long it
07:18 puts your team in and I'll tell
07:21 you I. If they wait. It's gonna
07:24 irritate their their players I
07:26 don't think that's smart either.
07:28 That could be true it could I
07:31 could understand that and it
07:32 could also be what the
07:33 franchise owner wants to do.
07:36 That'll be interesting I know
07:37 this. Both of those guys would
07:40 be really good candidates for a
07:41 lot of other jobs that are open
07:43 now and that are going to come
07:44 open they're not getting
07:45 Patrick Graham. The defensive
07:47 coordinator. Yeah I don't see
07:50 those guys getting away. It is
07:52 amazing- it's got a little.
07:57 There's not a lot of interim
07:58 coaching jobs that have been
07:59 amazing we know some at the
08:01 college level like dabble
08:02 twenty that went on to become
08:03 amazing. This interim job the
08:07 work these guys have done is
08:08 been significantly different
08:10 than we've seen interim coaches
08:12 do in energy M's do in the
08:13 past. And I think this is going
08:15 to be kind of the first of its
08:16 kind I think teams are gonna
08:18 follow this method in the
08:19 future if they turn over the
08:20 keys to an interim guy they're
08:22 gonna say you are free to do
08:24 what you want with the team.
08:26 Because I think there may be the
08:28 reason there's a couple
08:29 differences there I think that's
08:31 why this is gone so well. And
08:34 you had a team in position to
08:35 literally knock the chiefs out
08:37 at arrowhead. During the
08:39 Christmas holiday. That's a big
08:41 deal now what kind of momentum
08:44 are they gonna carry long trip
08:46 early game. I'm throwing that
08:48 stuff out the window this looks
08:50 like a team that is turning the
08:52 corner has turned the corner and
08:54 now they are going to hit the
08:56 gas which is. Nice in
08:59 Indianapolis since they've got
09:00 some roadways there and see how
09:02 much they can squeeze out of
09:04 twenty twenty three there's
09:05 still. Some juice to squeeze.
09:08 One more thing I want to
09:09 address with you a lot of
09:11 people seal how to similarities
09:13 with Antonio Pearson John Madden
09:15 both young. Both were position
09:17 coaches. A lot of similarities
09:20 and I see him too. I heard from
09:24 two one of the general managers
09:25 and NFC and AFC. That they
09:28 thought the Raiders could hire
09:29 them going around the Rooney
09:31 rule they may have to make some
09:32 contract adjustments. Several
09:34 people have reported that they
09:36 don't believe they can I don't
09:37 think it's a matter of your
09:38 liar you're terrible I just
09:39 think it's different opinions.
09:41 On PFT had a story with the
09:43 league spokesman last year.
09:46 Staying that. It was okay for
09:50 the Colts to promote Saturday
09:52 without the Rooney rule because
09:54 it was an interim but there
09:55 have to be an interview after
09:56 the season. But Rick Gosling the
10:00 legendary NFL writer- the modern
10:04 perfecter of the draft the mock
10:06 draft. The man that would pick
10:09 up the phone talk to any NFL
10:11 owner. This man is a legend is
10:15 an icon owners call him for
10:17 information stuff going on
10:18 around the league. As you know
10:20 he's my mentor and one of my
10:22 best friends a man that.
10:25 Fiercely impacted my life. Has
10:30 helped me on all my major
10:31 stories. He said the Rooney
10:34 rule was invented for other
10:35 teams not the Raiders. They're
10:38 the ones who have always broken
10:40 down racial barriers. They
10:42 brought in Eric Schell as an
10:44 interim promoted him didn't go
10:46 out interview. He says NFL be
10:48 damned. Mark Davis go hire
10:51 these guys and he doesn't think
10:53 the NFL comes after the Raiders
10:55 at all. Both men are minorities
10:59 but in the NFL isn't going to
11:01 touch me thanks there's no way
11:03 the NFL goes after him. He says
11:05 he needs to be like his father
11:07 and go hire him and set the
11:08 precedence. What do you think
11:10 when you saw that because when
11:11 that comes from Gosling that's
11:13 big because this man is so
11:16 universally respected around
11:18 the NFL. Universally respected
11:21 universally connected we hear
11:23 him we see him I mean Jerry
11:25 Jones mentions his name is hall
11:27 of fame speech. Rick Gosling's
11:30 a big deal. Folks a lot of
11:32 folks probably know that some
11:33 probably don't. Some probably
11:35 also don't know how big a deal
11:37 it was when our show was hired
11:38 by the Raiders anybody probably
11:40 thirty and below. They may not
11:42 know it was a huge deal and it
11:45 was a good hire our show knew
11:47 what he was doing he was ready
11:48 to be a head coach. The Raiders
11:49 took a leadership role in that
11:51 I would agree with him and
11:52 think that the right thing to
11:53 do for the Raiders go ahead and
11:54 take a leadership role. Reason
11:56 I say that is when you look at
11:57 the design of the Rooney rule
11:59 it probably wasn't meant to
12:01 preclude somebody from
12:02 promoting an interim head
12:03 coach. Who is a minority to be
12:06 a head coach same goes with
12:07 the GM so my thinking is the
12:09 Raiders just go ahead and make
12:11 this announcement and do it let
12:12 the league react and I bet the
12:14 league would react on the back
12:15 end to amend the Rooney rule or
12:18 provide a Pierce rule cut out
12:20 if you will that says if you
12:22 have chosen as your interim
12:24 coach a minority that goes
12:27 ahead and bypasses the Rooney
12:28 rule if you should choose to
12:30 make him a permanent head
12:31 coach. I understand what
12:33 Gosling's saying I think he's
12:34 on the right track the Raiders
12:36 can go ahead and do this they're
12:37 not going to lose it's not like
12:39 they're gonna lose a draft pick
12:40 or anything in fact they're
12:41 going to get the rules amended
12:43 because this makes so much
12:44 sense and it. Really doesn't
12:46 harm the rule this is not
12:47 somebody skirting around the
12:48 rule which we've maybe seen
12:51 once or twice in the past this
12:53 is. You know you knew this
12:56 story privately but in the
12:58 article I wrote. I revealed for
13:01 the first time publicly someone
13:04 above Matt and I know that you
13:05 know the name because I told
13:06 you off the record don't use
13:08 the name someone above Matt
13:10 Millen at the Lions hired
13:12 Mariucci and then came to him.
13:14 And said oh by the way we
13:16 hired Mariucci you better get
13:18 rid of the guy we got. Marty
13:20 morning wig and oh by the way
13:22 you better go interview a bunch
13:23 of minorities to follow the
13:25 Rooney rule. Well Matt Millen
13:28 said no I'm not going to lie to
13:30 minorities. That's not the
13:32 Raider way. Because he comes
13:34 to his NFL team with the Raiders.
13:37 And got fined two hundred large
13:40 by the NFL Paul Tagliabue. I
13:43 have a lot more on that story.
13:45 One day when I write my book.
13:47 But- it's fine two hundred
13:51 large. Because he wasn't going
13:54 to be disrespectful to his
13:55 faith. And lie to these guys
13:58 and he wasn't going to be
13:58 disrespectful he told me to Al
14:00 Davis in his being of a Raider.
14:03 And in light of these guys I
14:06 mean. I that was a huge story
14:09 that had never been made public.
14:11 That I thought was interesting
14:13 in how it. Applies to this.
14:16 Yeah I mean we're going back.
14:18 Well more than ten years. Since.
14:22 We discuss this- we discussed
14:24 it at when it was still timely.
14:27 When it was actually you know
14:28 not that many years after it
14:30 had gone on what you kind of
14:32 remember that as a story and
14:34 then it somehow comes up again
14:36 in this context it's completely
14:38 relevant. And in that situation
14:41 you would have a team trying to
14:42 skirt around the rule here's
14:44 who we already have hired which
14:46 may have seemed like a very
14:47 obvious candidate had they just
14:49 gone through with the normal
14:50 procedure wouldn't necessarily
14:51 been a problem but they already.
14:54 Somebody else already did that
14:56 and then the Lions got into
14:58 some water and I remember Matt
15:00 Mellon at the press conference
15:02 reacting a little strange to a
15:04 couple questions well who knew
15:05 there was this whole other
15:06 thing going on. That did not
15:09 serve the purpose of the rule
15:10 at all that was contradictory
15:12 to the rule. You know you could
15:14 argue that in reality if the
15:16 Raiders knew we're taking
15:17 Antonio Pierce if the league
15:19 made them go through the stupid
15:21 charade of interviewing Antonio
15:23 Pierce and other folks
15:24 everybody else would be
15:25 interviewing with that job
15:26 would be like what am I even
15:27 doing here and that would be
15:29 it's just not necessary to
15:31 interview with Antonio Pierce
15:32 and other folks. It's not
15:34 necessary at the NFL level this
15:36 is the most popular form of
15:38 entertainment in America it
15:40 should be the best run most
15:41 organized most thoughtful most
15:43 common sensical there is no
15:45 common sense there nobody wants
15:47 that to be repeated and blown
15:49 way up like it was not in the
15:51 Detroit situation. The Raiders
15:53 can get this done the league
15:54 and the rule will adjust I
15:56 think they move on from there
15:59 and I think. The future right
16:02 now yes in the twenty twenty
16:04 fourteen will be a new team
16:06 it'll be a new team a different
16:07 situation but the future. I
16:11 think you see it the people are
16:13 getting pretty jacked up and
16:15 excited hasn't been excitement
16:17 like this in a while they got
16:19 the leader they've got the guy
16:21 not the guy who maybe was the
16:23 guy not the guy who could have
16:24 been the guy not the guy that
16:25 looked really good on TV had
16:27 been out of the sport for a
16:28 while. But I think the future
16:30 right now they know what
16:31 everybody around the league
16:32 seems to know it and I got a
16:33 feeling well before the Super
16:35 Bowl kicks off that thing is
16:36 going to be stamped. In ink.
16:39 Sorry about my phone ringing
16:40 Matt must have known we were
16:42 talking about it was Mellon.
16:48 All right. Let's turn our
16:51 direction now. You and I are
16:55 going to talk about the
16:58 Christmas Day games but I want
17:00 to talk about the Christmas Day
17:02 games the NFL comes in like a
17:04 bully. And just says okay NBA
17:08 you think you won Christmas.
17:11 All my beer. The Sunday game in
17:15 the Christmas Day games were
17:17 overall booming ratings
17:20 phenomena blue someone told me
17:23 and I've not yet verified this
17:25 but the NBA games were
17:26 exponentially bigger than all
17:29 all of the NBA games combined on
17:31 that day and I guess there was
17:33 more than one I don't know that
17:35 but I'm not an NBA guy but it
17:37 was one was exponentially
17:38 bigger the NBA essentially I
17:40 mean the NFL essentially just
17:42 push the NBA right out of the
17:44 way. To me I don't care if
17:47 Christmas falls on a Tuesday a
17:49 Wednesday a Friday. Christmas
17:54 Day. Is going to be cemented as
17:58 an NFL holiday your thoughts if
18:00 we're going that far I want to
18:01 add two games on Christmas Eve
18:04 also here's where this all
18:06 comes from again younger folks
18:08 may not know. When I was young
18:10 when I was there there was not
18:11 really a thought that there'd
18:13 be Christmas our Christmas Eve
18:14 games on the NFL maybe it would
18:16 fall on the calendar but like
18:18 are you crazy no way. And then
18:20 the NBA comes along and says
18:22 hey you know we're gonna we're
18:23 gonna try this and they try it.
18:25 And over time it now expands to
18:27 where they have a whole bunch
18:28 of games and they've got that
18:29 thing going along for a while
18:30 which is fine now surely the
18:32 NFL's looking ahead to calendar
18:34 schedules and they say okay.
18:36 That's the year we're going to
18:38 step on the gas we're gonna put
18:40 the we're gonna leave the games
18:41 alone on Christmas Eve we're
18:42 gonna stack them on Christmas
18:44 Day we're gonna call it the
18:45 holiday classic. Vine by we the
18:49 American viewing public that
18:51 we're gonna have a game on the
18:53 calendar and we're gonna push.
18:53 Twenty five million plus for
18:56 each of the games. Really good
18:59 idea so you look at your
19:01 calendar and you see- you know
19:03 what's coming up in the future.
19:05 And you think that maybe there
19:06 is a possibility now for
19:07 Tuesday Wednesday Thursday maybe
19:10 we do have a stray game or two.
19:12 I do think this is now possible
19:14 this was such an overwhelming
19:16 success and for sure people can
19:18 choose to watch other stuff.
19:19 But this is such an overwhelming
19:21 success this train is not.
19:23 Going back in the station. If
19:25 you've got a Christmas day on a
19:27 Monday you've got probably get
19:29 stack three games there if
19:31 you've got- Christmas Day and
19:33 Christmas Eve in the middle of
19:34 the week there might be a way
19:36 to work a game in or not work
19:38 another one. I like the idea of
19:41 a couple of games on Christmas
19:43 Eve and Christmas Day if they
19:45 want to put three on each
19:46 that's fine by me I thought it
19:48 was a huge success and even
19:49 though you had kind of a dud
19:51 matchup or two but really. What
19:53 look like a dud with the
19:55 Broncos and the Patriots. There
19:59 were so many eyeballs on it
20:01 it's unbelievable you just look
20:03 at it from a broadcasting
20:04 perspective. Last year nineteen
20:07 of the twenty most watched
20:09 broadcasts on American
20:10 television where the NFL the
20:11 other one was a college football
20:12 playoff. You can't compare this
20:16 to anything else it's the single
20:18 most popular form of
20:19 entertainment. And it has a
20:21 comfortable home now. You can
20:24 call the holiday classic it
20:25 helps you get away with it more
20:26 NFL we will watch and we want
20:29 the chiefs in the Raiders we
20:31 want the Broncos in the Raiders
20:32 we want the Giants in the Eagles
20:34 we want those best. Matchups and
20:37 best rivalries this is where
20:39 some of that flexing actually
20:40 may help the NFL. This thing
20:43 goes forward it was a humongous
20:45 success. Great okay there's a
20:47 new trend in the NFL about
20:49 internal suspensions internal.
20:52 You know letting. Somebody talk
20:55 about that did somebody talk
20:57 about that last week did we
20:58 talk about that last week hello
21:00 kaboom. Now like everything
21:03 we're on it we're talking about
21:05 things before the trend. Did I
21:07 not say before anyone said it.
21:10 No playoffs for the Patriots
21:12 Belichick gone did or did not.
21:15 I mean before one was talking
21:17 about it. Yeah we're talking.
21:19 About it. In scholar yeah way
21:21 way early in this in still in
21:23 the summer. Because I was told
21:25 about it. By people with direct
21:28 connection okay I even got
21:30 mocked when the story came out
21:32 that he'd signed a big extension
21:33 I said well I don't care I
21:35 trust my sources okay we talk
21:38 about officiating before it can
21:40 cover the official in the box.
21:43 Now it's being discussed we talk
21:45 about internal suspensions. Now
21:47 I'm not saying that. I didn't
21:50 see this coming one week later
21:52 but if you think that the guys
21:54 in Green Bay didn't decide to
21:56 suspend. Jerry Jerry Alexander
21:59 because of what happened in
22:00 Indianapolis you're insane this
22:03 is a small community it's
22:05 almost like they're not high
22:07 schools but you know there's
22:08 only thirty two teams they all
22:10 know what's going on. So the
22:12 Colts get away get away with
22:13 this use this ability they have
22:16 under the bargaining agreement
22:17 between the Colts and the
22:18 Indians. Jerry Jerry Alexander
22:20 kind of loses his mind a little
22:22 bit. Gets a little out of place
22:25 Matt LaFleur says well here's
22:27 what has to be done you must go
22:29 now and stay home internal
22:32 suspensions trending. And I go
22:35 way out on a limb not much of a
22:37 limb at all there will be more
22:39 before the end of this season.
22:41 Somebody's going to get
22:43 internally suspended next week
22:44 this is a right right. Problem
22:46 is if you go out and blow a
22:48 coin toss or go rogue that's a
22:50 really good reason to get sat
22:51 down and also gives them maybe
22:53 a chance to call a guy off the
22:54 practice squad and find out if
22:56 he can play at the NFL level. I
22:58 don't know if this is a wake up
22:59 call for the players or not but-
23:02 if I was betting I bet there
23:03 will be another internal
23:04 suspension before the final
23:06 games next week. Even though
23:08 it's a ten year CBA at some
23:10 point it's going to come up in
23:11 the CBA all right let's talk
23:12 about Russell Wilson. Like
23:14 Derek Carr last year the
23:16 Broncos have made the decision
23:17 we can't afford for you to be
23:19 injured. And guarantee any
23:21 already more money I think they
23:22 all like close to forty million
23:24 next year. Whether or not. He's
23:28 the quarterback but if he's
23:29 injured I think it goes close
23:30 to forty million the next year.
23:33 So they make the decision to
23:35 bench them. I guess it's kind
23:37 of an internal suspension. But
23:39 your thoughts on what happened
23:40 to Ross. Well I got a couple
23:43 thoughts the first one is. We
23:45 did compliment Wilson for
23:46 playing pretty well a couple
23:48 weeks ago for a little stretch
23:49 we will now go back to
23:50 criticizing him for looking
23:52 like he's unprepared he's
23:53 unfocused he's unmotivated
23:55 football is maybe the fifth
23:57 priority in his life. It's done
23:59 he's over and done. Being the
24:03 quarterback the Denver Broncos.
24:05 There's a couple thoughts come
24:06 to mind the first one is. What
24:08 happened with car last year set
24:10 a new precedent. It looks
24:12 pretty smart. It's being
24:13 applied this year and I think
24:15 it was actually inspired by
24:17 what happened here in Atlanta
24:18 when Matt Ryan was basically
24:19 banging a hammer say no we're
24:21 gonna keep on playing we're
24:22 gonna keep and put our best
24:23 foot forward. And in doing so
24:25 the Falcons won two or three
24:27 extra games they lost out on
24:29 Trevor Lawrence they didn't
24:30 draft Justin Fields their
24:32 franchise has been set way way
24:33 back. I actually think people
24:36 around the league saw that. I
24:38 think somebody at the Raiders
24:39 said here this is the strange
24:40 move this what we have to do
24:41 to massage around this. We've
24:44 seen it now copy with Wilson we
24:46 will see it again next year
24:48 copied if there's somebody like
24:50 Daniel Jones or other folks in
24:52 a similar situation. This thing
24:54 is coming. That's the first
24:56 thing I think the second thing
24:58 I think is why did Sean Payton
24:59 take this job does he have some
25:01 agreement with the Broncos that
25:03 he can handle this how he sees
25:04 fit because otherwise why in
25:06 the world would you take that
25:07 job. With Russell Wilson in
25:09 two thousand twenty three. It
25:12 wasn't gonna work it was
25:14 amazing that it worked for a
25:15 bit with they got a bunch of
25:16 turnovers and he was thinking
25:17 and Duncan. Throw up a couple
25:18 hail Mary's. It's a surprise to
25:22 see it happen the way it has
25:24 because I thought the contract
25:25 was so behemoth that they
25:26 really couldn't. Make any
25:28 better of it. But it's going
25:31 now and I would say fairly the
25:33 Broncos are on the clock in in
25:35 the quarterback market and are
25:36 likely to draft a quarterback.
25:38 In April. All right let's talk
25:41 about the frenemies United.
25:43 What you tell me do you think
25:44 Russell Wilson is done because
25:46 to me he's done. As a starting
25:48 productive NFL quarterback does
25:50 in my crazy or see Lizzy done.
25:55 I am sure somebody will give
25:57 him a chance but he's not going
25:58 to get paid what he gets paid.
26:02 Yeah that that is it. An
26:04 overwhelming amount so I that
26:06 will it will be interesting to
26:07 see we'll see how it happens it
26:09 does affect the Raiders it will
26:10 affect the Raiders who's the
26:11 quarterback for the Broncos
26:12 next year. It ain't gonna be
26:14 Wilson in the final game.
26:18 Agreed all right let's move on
26:20 John. Frenemies United. Jerry
26:25 Jones decides to eat some crow.
26:28 Makes nice with Jimmy Johnson
26:30 which I think he should have
26:31 done. And now he's going to be
26:34 inducted into the ring of honor
26:36 I have said many times. If Jerry
26:39 Jones excuse me if Jimmy
26:40 Johnson is not in the Cowboys
26:42 ring of honor. Then there
26:44 shouldn't be one. I think this
26:47 is a great move by Jerry Jones
26:49 I think it was the right move.
26:51 And good for Jimmy to just let
26:52 it happen. Yeah I mean I was-
26:55 one of the folks that saw you
26:56 know you see these. Big scenes
26:58 around the desk when up here
26:59 comes Jerry Jimmy and- the
27:01 announcement that he was going
27:02 to be in the ring of honor and
27:03 then then the one a handful of
27:05 weeks ago that this was
27:06 what it was going to be. This
27:07 is an amazing story if young
27:09 folks out there aren't familiar
27:10 with it go read it you're gonna
27:12 like it it's salacious. Rick
27:15 yeah everyone knows the story
27:16 of. Of Jimmy I see what Jerry
27:19 Jones sitting at the bar. Or
27:22 sitting was for sure I was at a
27:23 bar in a restaurant. Making all
27:25 the comments Rick wrote it
27:27 well Rick and his partner. And
27:30 it blew the whole thing up.
27:32 That's the story yeah and it
27:34 but there's there's more to it
27:36 these guys were on the same
27:37 team in Arkansas which is
27:38 amazing. And they go about
27:40 their lives and that they come
27:42 back together. And then there's
27:44 the humongous Herschel Walker
27:46 trade which it wasn't the Wayne
27:48 Gretzky trade folks now nothing
27:50 was but it was. Huge it was
27:55 huge it was so successful and
27:57 effective. Who gets the credit
27:59 for that. Then the Cowboys are
28:01 long rolling their long rolling
28:03 and here comes this guy. Out
28:05 about maybe more often than not
28:07 saying anybody could coach that
28:08 team help Barry Switzer could
28:10 coach that team who knows
28:11 exactly what it is. It gets put
28:13 in ink. And then it's a wild
28:15 scene with Jimmy take it off a
28:18 Corvette or something and
28:19 people like what's going on.
28:21 The Cowboys do in another
28:22 Super Bowl they haven't won one
28:24 since. So you get the thinking
28:26 how many could they have won.
28:29 If Jerry and Jimmy got along
28:32 or Jerry. Didn't run his mouth
28:36 Jimmy covered his ears etc. Now
28:38 these guys have survived a lot
28:39 of life it is neat to see Jimmy
28:41 Johnson going in as a then
28:43 humongous Redskins fan these
28:45 guys were tough to beat. No
28:47 doubt and they really had taken.
28:51 Nearly the worst franchise on
28:53 the field and just incredibly
28:55 flipped it. There's always a
28:57 question and I'm curious
28:58 everyone wants to know what you
28:59 think how many more Super Bowl
29:01 could they have won. I would
29:03 set the over under at two but
29:06 it seems like they for sure
29:07 would have had another. I don't
29:09 know how many that more they
29:10 could have gotten to but they
29:12 probably would have had a
29:13 couple more. Years ago I talked
29:16 to somebody who was on that
29:17 team. I don't think they would
29:19 mind me using their name but
29:21 because I don't have their
29:22 permission I won't- but- they
29:26 told me they thought with the
29:27 way contracts were structured.
29:30 And the in the important guys
29:32 they had under deals they said
29:34 they felt like they would want
29:35 at least three more. It's very
29:38 positive that was very yeah
29:40 yeah I mean it the biggest
29:42 dynasty that never was that
29:44 would have been the longest I
29:45 think was the Edmonton Oilers
29:46 had they not traded Wayne
29:48 Gretzky I mean that could have
29:48 been. Extraordinary they could
29:51 have they could have gotten to
29:52 ten- the Cowboys. The Cowboys
29:56 were unbelievable and it was
29:59 beyond insane what happened
30:01 there in the fallout and then
30:03 the back and forth. Rough
30:05 sandpaper between these two
30:07 guys for more than fifteen or
30:09 twenty years. It's fine it's
30:12 nice to see it all smoothed out
30:13 I don't know if they'll be a
30:15 zinger or two thrown out during
30:16 that ceremony but without any
30:18 question. The record is
30:21 unbelievable. Of course Jimmy
30:23 Johnson belongs not only in the
30:25 in the ring of honor it's like
30:26 literally the center spot. When
30:29 he is gone in this game
30:30 continues to be played there
30:32 will be so much more actual.
30:35 Detailed inspection and review
30:37 of what Jimmy Johnson did at
30:39 the college and the pro level
30:41 he is a one of a kind he could
30:43 have won anywhere anytime. And
30:46 he is without question. His
30:49 shadow is going to be bigger
30:50 than Jerry Jones at the end of
30:51 the day and I wonder if that
30:53 doesn't just stick to Jerry a
30:55 little bit. Wishing he was the
30:57 bigger shadow over the sport.
31:00 All right John I am going to
31:03 ask you very quickly what's
31:04 your prediction for later today
31:07 I'm taking. The Raiders
31:11 twenty seven fourteen. I'm
31:14 gonna do twenty seven thirteen.
31:17 Mine is pretty close I like
31:19 twenty four seventeen Raiders I
31:22 give a little credence to the
31:23 home field for the Colts but
31:25 the Raiders are getting it
31:27 going their best football is
31:29 still ahead of them this year
31:31 although it we may see it this
31:32 week I like. I mean what a
31:35 momentum burst they're gonna go
31:36 in and show up and take care of
31:38 professional business against
31:39 the team they really should beat
31:41 at this point. That Lena before.
31:46 Now let's go to our fearsome
31:48 foursome I feel like these four
31:50 are no brainers I feel like the
31:52 schedule as people have looked
31:53 they're like Hey Saturday night
31:55 game is good Sunday night game
31:57 is good these are easy to see
32:00 lions at Cowboys lions not much
32:04 to lose all the pressure on the
32:07 Cowboys we have seen them fall
32:09 on their face before the last
32:10 game at Texas stadium the
32:12 Ravens got him if you recall
32:13 this is Jimmy Johnson day. The
32:16 Lions have nothing to lose. I
32:20 like the Lions to steal it.
32:22 Go to Cowboys and I'm gonna tell
32:25 you why the the lion team on
32:29 Thanksgiving showed me that
32:31 when you have expectations for
32:33 them it's a little too early to
32:35 have expectations I don't have
32:38 expectations on the Cowboys you
32:40 know that I pick against them a
32:41 lot but I think they're good
32:43 enough they're at home Jimmy
32:45 Johnson day I'm just gonna ride
32:47 with the Cowboys on this one.
32:49 It will be must see and it'll
32:51 get twenty five million I think
32:53 on people doing it. Bangles
32:56 achieves. I don't know what
32:58 else there is to say. Look like
33:01 they're crashing into I mean it
33:03 they you know the Jaguars are
33:04 going off a cliff it looks like
33:05 the chiefs are in some serious
33:07 trouble the bangles at the same
33:09 time must must must they need
33:11 they must have. At some point
33:13 the chiefs have to flip it back
33:15 this is one where I think the
33:16 chiefs win by less than a field
33:17 goal. Yeah it wouldn't so yeah
33:21 because because the borough. I
33:23 mean he's gone chase. You know
33:27 that the whole thing for the
33:28 bangles I predicted they missed
33:29 the playoffs at the start of the
33:30 year just because I thought
33:31 they'd have some bad luck they
33:32 have but this is a must for them
33:35 that there's no there's no
33:36 losing yeah I'm gonna change my
33:38 prediction I I'm I'm just gonna
33:40 ride with the chiefs you talk me
33:41 out I'm gonna go with the
33:42 chiefs. The Packers the Vikings
33:46 is interesting for many reasons
33:48 playoffs be number. Remember
33:51 the Vikings play the Lions again
33:53 next week even though they just
33:54 played last week that could come
33:56 into mean more for one or both
33:58 than we think. You like the
34:00 Packers. I love that home field
34:03 environment in Minnesota but I
34:05 hate what's happened to them
34:06 losing Hockinson you're talking
34:09 about a team with three major
34:10 passing threats now we're down
34:12 at least one. I gotta go to
34:14 sorry once Hockinson went down I
34:17 was riding with the Vikings but
34:18 without Hockinson I'm going back
34:20 one too many injuries and lastly
34:23 it's no brainer. Dolphins at
34:26 Ravens here comes speed here
34:29 come the Ravens we know you're
34:31 gonna pick Baltimore because
34:32 they're at home I'm going to
34:34 agree with you and think that
34:36 this may be the last loss of the
34:38 year for the Dolphins. It might
34:41 you think they get they're gonna
34:42 win the Super Bowl I don't think
34:44 so but if they do if they lose
34:48 here and win it I would not be
34:50 surprised. Oh all right Johnny
34:55 there's our fearsome foursome my
34:56 friend you are in a rare mood
34:59 today. I don't know what to say
35:04 I mean I I I like the Ravens this
35:07 week and it's not just the hard
35:09 knocks factor. The Dolphins seem
35:12 to have a little bit of an edge
35:13 over everybody moving that
35:15 football. Yeah and if you get
35:16 things to go their way if
35:17 they're playing in familiar
35:18 weather or they're playing
35:19 inside. This is not this does
35:22 not look like the fold up the
35:23 tent dolphins that we've seen in
35:25 the past. So stay tuned.
35:27 Everybody's watching everybody
35:29 can't wait it's gonna be a fun
35:31 one today. We're ready to kick
35:33 it. All right he is Johnny
