00:00 Welcome to the WrestleTalk News, I'm Pete Quinnell and I hope you all had a wonderful
00:10 holiday season.
00:11 We've all here at WrestleTalk HQ been off for a few days, but I'm sure wrestling's
00:14 been pretty chill in that time too right?
00:17 Nothing big happening?
00:19 So The Rock's coming back to WWE, AEW higher ups are leaving the company, and Chris Jericho
00:23 got into a social media argument with a lawyer about an NDA about RawLout?
00:28 Right.
00:30 So let us begin with what has permeated all of 2023…
00:33 AEW's backstage.
00:35 The company's undergone several changes this year with regard to its staff, and there's
00:39 even more turmoil seemingly ahead, with Fightful Select reporting that Raphael Morphy, AEW's
00:44 Vice President of Live Events and Touring, is due to be leaving the company at the end
00:48 of the year.
00:49 Morphy would have had a big influence on AEW's live events, with PWInsider reporting that
00:53 he's responsible for setting up live event tours, booking buildings, local marketing,
00:57 and other logistical responsibilities.
00:59 He's also said to be a huge factor in AEW securing Wembley Stadium for All in London
01:04 this year.
01:05 Morphy has previously worked for both WWE and TNA in the past, but he seems to be shifting
01:09 away from wrestling, as PWInsider Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio and the Fightful
01:13 Select report note that he'll be working with the Barclays Center in New York, with
01:17 Meltzer adding that he'll be booking acts for the venue.
01:20 PWInsider reported that Morphy notified AEW about his departure at the recent Montreal
01:25 events, and will be officially finished with the company following World's End this weekend,
01:29 after he'd been working with AEW since its inception.
01:32 But perhaps more shockingly, another name is set to leave AEW as well, that being the
01:36 Chief Marketing and Merchandising Officer Dana Massey.
01:39 Now you may be thinking, why is this one such a big deal?
01:42 Well Massey isn't just the Chief Marketing and Merchandising Officer, she's also the
01:46 wife of one Matt Jackson, one of the Executive Vice Presidents of the company, and has also
01:51 been with AEW since the start.
01:54 According to Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Radio, AEW attempted to re-sign Massey, but
01:58 she declined.
01:59 So what happened?
02:00 Well as most things do in AEW, all roads lead to CM Punk.
02:04 You heard about this little thing called Brawl Out?
02:06 Dave Meltzer speculates on Wrestling Observer Radio, "I think with everything that happened
02:10 over the last year with her husband and brother-in-law vilified and never defended and never being
02:15 allowed to defend themselves and the company never defending them, it made it really difficult."
02:20 Meltzer confirmed that the Young Bucks themselves, Matt and Nick Jackson, have re-signed with
02:23 AEW as they felt it was the best financial move for them, but Massey didn't.
02:28 With her, I think it just got too tough.
02:30 I'm sure there's other things too, but that was a lot of it, the fact that she felt
02:33 they were never defended at a time when they probably should have been defended by the
02:37 company.
02:38 Another situation was mentioned too, one specifically about Punk himself, where he publicly called
02:42 out some merchandise ahead of Ring of Honor's Death Before Dishonor in July.
02:46 A commemorative t-shirt was made for the event, but had the date wrong, listed as Saturday
02:50 July 21st when it actually took place on Friday July 21st, and also had the location wrong,
02:56 as the event actually happened in Trenton, New Jersey, not Newark, New Jersey as was
03:00 originally listed.
03:01 Punk posted an image of this botched merch on his Instagram story with the caption "Absolutely
03:06 not shocking.
03:07 How could this happen?"
03:08 This was highlighted as just one of the moments that could have made Massey's time with
03:12 AEW difficult, as she was the Chief Officer of Marketing and Merchandising, and a factor
03:17 into why she's leaving.
03:19 As Alvarez and Meltzer spoke about on Wrestling Observer Radio, AEW isn't dying by any means,
03:24 but it is changing and evolving.
03:25 It's a very different company these days.
03:27 For better or worse, I don't think we'll be able to tell just yet, but give it six
03:32 months, a year, and we can see if AEW manages to flourish in its new era.
03:36 So let's talk about Brawl Out some more, shall we?
03:39 It truly will go down as one of the most pivotal moments in AEW's history, and just when
03:44 we think the ramifications of it are finished, we get pulled back in.
03:47 The topic was broached once again on X in the past few days, as the attorney of both
03:51 Ace Steel and CM Punk, Steven P. New, was asked on Wrestling with Rip Rogers if he could
03:56 give any details about the NDAs they'd signed to do with the incident, to which he responded
04:01 essentially saying that the NDAs were for life, so you won't hear any details about
04:05 it forever.
04:06 Chris Jericho seemingly saw an article posted by the ex-account Web Is Jericho, which is
04:11 apparently his own wrestling news account, and quote tweeted it saying "I didn't
04:16 sign one".
04:17 This caught the attention of the attorney, Steven P. New, who responded saying "It's
04:20 in your employee handbook unless you have a special one.
04:23 We can figure it out."
04:24 This apparently didn't sit well with Mr Jericho, who said "Hey @StevenPNew, I don't
04:29 adhere to an employee handbook and have never had one in 4 years of working for AEW.
04:34 I've also never signed an NDA in my life.
04:37 Ever.
04:38 So stop trying to be a bully and making egotistical fantasy brags for your clients and start doing
04:42 some research before you make blanket statements about your buddies.
04:46 Because I saw everything that night, including how Lucy and her husband and best buddy acted
04:51 and what really went down.
04:52 And since I was in the room and watching her and everybody else the whole time, I know
04:56 exactly what really happened.
04:58 And considering you weren't there and I was, maybe you should shut your Mark ass up,
05:03 because what really went down was disgusting."
05:05 Chris, it's 4am on Christmas morning, please!
05:09 New had one more response saying "Thank you Chris, we will just attach this tweet
05:13 as Exhibit A. Merry Christmas."
05:16 Steve, it's midday on Christmas day, please!
05:20 Who knows if the details will ever come out about what truly went down, but the likelihood
05:24 is we'll never know.
05:25 Because even if someone has their side of what happened, it will probably clash with
05:29 another party side of events, so it'll only ever be rumour and innuendo online.
05:33 Hey but The Rock is probably coming back to WWE, so that's fun, right?
05:38 Yeah, wrestling's fun.
05:40 Every year since 2020, around when we get to the end of the year, speculation starts
05:44 picking up that The Rock is going to come back to WWE around the Royal Rumble to have
05:48 a match with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, and, just double checking, yeah that hasn't
05:53 happened yet.
05:54 But will 2024 be different?
05:57 As part of the road to WrestleMania in 2024, WWE will be putting on Elimination Chamber
06:01 in Perth, Australia.
06:03 Much like with other local authorities paying for events to come to their location, such
06:06 as Clash at the Castle in Wales or Backlash in Puerto Rico, the state government of Western
06:11 Australia is reported to have paid for Elimination Chamber next year.
06:15 But it seems they want a little more than just the show, as they were also asking for
06:19 specific talent.
06:20 Or, more accurately, one specific talent.
06:23 According to emails obtained by the Sunday Times under Freedom of Information laws, the
06:26 tourism board asked about their ability to dictate key talents who participate, for example,
06:32 could we aim to secure WWE alumni such as Dwayne Johnson.
06:36 I love the idea of them asking, could we maybe ask for certain wrestlers to appear and perform
06:40 on the show?
06:41 Like, oh I don't know, let's just say a name.
06:43 Hollywood A-list actor and one of the most famous people in the world, The Rock?
06:47 WWE's response to this email was redacted, so we don't know what they said, but that's
06:51 not the only clue that Rocky may be coming back to WWE soon.
06:54 On Instagram, The Rock recently posted a series of images from a recent Make-A-Wish experience,
06:59 talking about his experience of meeting Jaden.
07:01 But he also left a little something in the caption of the photos, where he said, "I
07:05 told him a little secret (shush emoji) that may or may not involve some dude returning
07:10 to WWE to lay the smackdown on all their candy asses.
07:14 Winking emoji, hand waving emoji."
07:16 The winking emoji and hand waving emoji are carrying a lot of weight in this one, but
07:20 that sure would be an interesting thing to post if he wasn't in fact returning to WWE
07:24 to lay the smackdown on all their candy asses.
07:26 What would you do with a Rock return to WWE?
07:28 Let me know in the comments.
07:29 There's so much other wrestling news to cover, so let's go with a little lightning
07:33 round of news.
07:34 Goldberg recently said on Steve and Captain Evil that he tried to be a part of Sting's
07:38 retirement match at AEW Revolution next year.
07:41 It was said in a way that made it sound like he isn't part of it, but tried to be, so
07:45 chances are it's not him, but we still don't know, so it could be.
07:48 The two haven't shared a ring since the year 2000.
07:51 The ace of New Japan, Hiroshi Tanahashi, has been announced as the new President and Representative
07:56 Director of New Japan Pro Wrestling, taking over from Takami Obari, with Hitoshi Matsumoto
08:01 taking up the role of Director, replacing Michiaki Nishizawa.
08:04 New Japan also mentioned in their statement that at WrestleKingdom on January 4th, Tanahashi
08:08 will be addressing the fans directly about his new role within the company and what it
08:12 means.
08:13 MJF wants to be acting full time in the near future after saying as much in an interview
08:17 with ComicBook.com.
08:18 MJF recently portrayed Lance Von Erick in The Iron Claw, and was credited as an executive
08:23 producer on the film.
08:24 Speaking in his interview, MJF said, "I genuinely think in five years from now I'm
08:28 going to be a guy that people see regularly on their TV screen outside of the professional
08:32 wrestling landscape.
08:33 Trust me, I love wrestling too much to not still be involved in it.
08:36 I will most likely still be full time, but I want to be acting full time as well by then."
08:41 He also mentioned that he'll be one of the greats who transitioned out of wrestling and
08:44 into acting like The Rock, Batista and John Cena.
08:48 WWE hosted a live event at Madison Square Garden last night which saw CM Punk's first
08:52 match back since his most recent return at Survivor Series, where he beat Dominik Mysterio.
08:56 Seth Rollins also paid tribute to Bray Wyatt at the end of the show with a heartfelt promo,
09:00 and Fightful Select is reporting that internal WWE live event reports note that the show
09:05 was a sellout, and was WWE's highest grossing domestic non-televised event of all time.
09:10 Brandon Thurston of WrestleNomics noted on X that this means that the show must have
09:14 exceeded $769,000, WWE's previous record from 2018.
09:19 That's it for the news today, but our coverage of the WrestleTalk End of Year Awards continues
09:23 over on the WrestleTalk Podcast channel, so click the video on screen now to watch
09:27 what was voted on as the worst matches of 2023.
