00:00 I'm Laurie Blake, welcome to the WrestleTalk News, on Fridays we wear pink.
00:12 Our top story today concerns some ex-WWE talent who are supposedly soon to once again be WWE
00:18 talent.
00:19 Because after Popper H took over from mean old man McMahon as the creative force behind
00:23 WWE, he went on a bit of a reinstatement spree, didn't he?
00:27 Bringing back a number of notable names who had found themselves released in the company's
00:30 previous rounds of budget cuts.
00:33 Then WWE went into a bit of a hiring freeze, happy to play with the toys it had.
00:38 But Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat and Santa's elves have been hard at
00:42 work so why not get yourself a new little toy, thinks Triple H. Or I guess an old toy
00:46 with a new lick of paint.
00:47 Sort of like the Generation 2 Transformers.
00:49 That's a reference specifically for Luke Owen there.
00:52 Merry Christmas.
00:53 Anyway, there has been a rumour floating around for a while now that the authors of Pain could
00:57 be set to make a WWE return very soon.
01:01 And Fightful Select have been looking into it and discovered that there is indeed a plan
01:05 for AOP's Aikerman Rezar to come back to WWE TV in the very near future.
01:11 Fightful's report says that the plan is for them to join the Smackdown brand, though
01:15 that is subject to change and the current thinking is that Paul Ellering will be joining
01:20 them on TV.
01:22 All the way back in January this year, Fightful had heard chatter about WWE interest in the
01:26 pair, but it transpires in this new report that the two have been signed to the company
01:31 for a year and a half.
01:33 So apparently right in the middle of Triple H's rehiring spree.
01:37 He had the toys all along.
01:38 Because Fightful said that the pair were back at the WWE Performance Center back in August
01:43 2022.
01:44 That's blooming mad.
01:46 And while some talent have ridden the release rollercoaster, there are others who have had
01:51 much more of a steady rise in WWE.
01:54 People like Bayley.
01:55 Though I guess some doubt about her WWE future would have been cast by her buddy Sasha Banks
01:59 aka Mercedes Monet walking out of the door and working with other promotions.
02:04 Though it does look like Bayley is sticking around in WWE now, as WWE sources have claimed
02:08 to Fightful that Bayley has signed a new multi-year deal with the company.
02:12 Because apparently WWE has been locking down multiple high level talent to long term contracts,
02:17 Bayley is being viewed as a priority both as a top level in-ring and on-screen talent,
02:22 but also as a well liked member of the crew backstage among both staff and other talent.
02:27 Another name from WWE's women's roster that could also be sticking around for the
02:30 foreseeable future is Trish Stratus.
02:33 Because the Hall of Famer had a bumper year in 2023, feuding with Becky Lynch is the marquee
02:38 moment, though she hasn't been seen since her defeat at Payback.
02:41 However it seems like Trish isn't ready to hang up her boots just yet.
02:45 Speaking on GoreTV, she reminisced on the year that was and potential plans for the
02:51 future saying, "2023 was probably the most insane year I've had on all fronts.
02:55 I have a lot of things percolating and we'll let you know when we can let you know.
02:59 I'm excited, we're on a roll here, good things are happening, new opportunities and
03:03 stuff that I didn't even think I could tap into that I am.
03:07 It's been fun.
03:08 I can't wait."
03:10 And she ended the entire thing off with, "That was fun.
03:13 I look forward to doing that again next year.
03:16 I'm so excited."
03:17 Do you want to see Trish Stratus back in the WWE ring?
03:19 Let us know in the comments down below.
03:21 In contrast to those who's 2024 is now strictly WWE, a whole bunch of recently released talent
03:26 now have the opportunity to explore all of the options in the wider world of wrestling.
03:31 That's because as of yesterday, December 21st, the likes of Dolph Ziggler, Mustafa
03:35 Ali, Shelton Benjamin, Matt Riddle and more were officially set free after fulfilling
03:40 their 90-day non-compete clauses.
03:42 We will start with perhaps the biggest name of the lot, Dolph Ziggler, who was announced
03:46 for his first match away from WWE in two decades at World Wrestling Council in Puerto Rico
03:52 on January 6th.
03:53 Ziggler has been linked with moves to AEW, which will just file with everyone else under
03:58 The Devil, and even to TNA as their rumoured biggest ever signing that Scott DeMauro keeps
04:03 hyping up recently.
04:05 Ziggler is also advertised for another appearance in the New Year alongside the original bro
04:09 Matt Riddle at the MCW Fan Jam and Anniversary shows on February 4th.
04:14 Speaking of Riddle, as reported earlier this week, he will be making his return to WWE's
04:19 recent courtroom rival MLW, tagging on Jacob Fatu at the promotion's Kings of Coliseum
04:24 event also on January 6th.
04:27 But it seems like Riddle's MLW return is also far from a one-off, as the promotion's
04:30 CEO Kurt Bauer has confirmed on Busted Open Radio that Riddle has indeed signed a contract
04:35 with them, saying "He's going to be on virtually all of our shows going forward.
04:40 Where that takes us down the road, we'll see.
04:42 He's able to work for other places, just to let everyone know that.
04:44 But he's primarily with us."
04:47 While Riddle puts pen to paper with MLW, another man who has also done the same is Mace, or
04:52 Marseille, should I say.
04:55 Should that rhyme?
04:56 Wow.
04:57 But I should clarify that by pen to paper I do not mean a contract, as in a post that
05:00 mirrors the famous Cody Rhodes global checklist from way back when, Marseille has listed some
05:04 rather interesting future opponents on his wishlist.
05:08 Rallying off a bunch of dream matches with the likes of Ya Mum and Ya Dad, as well as
05:13 the true spectacle with renowned grappler Godzilla and of course the number one heel
05:17 in the history of video games Final Fantasy 7's own Sephiroth.
05:21 Sephiroth!
05:22 That just happened.
05:24 I would pay money to see that.
05:25 In the meantime though, both Mace and Mansoor are hitting the indies, already appearing
05:29 at Deadlock Pro Wrestling Show on December 10th, with further appearance at EFY's Big
05:32 Gate Brunch and GCW also set for January.
05:35 It's a crazy month for wrestling.
05:37 And it's my birthday.
05:38 Speaking of GCW, one released star has already appeared for the promotion, wasting absolutely
05:43 zero time in returning to work, that being AJ Francis aka Top Dollar, who showed up in
05:49 a mask at the GCW Holiday Special yesterday attacking Joey Janela.
05:53 The former Hit Row star had previously been announced for the promotion's Look At Me
05:56 event on January 26th, but this is like over a month in advance.
06:01 It's not even Christmas yet, busy boy.
06:03 Unlike Dollar, Shelton Benjamin is seemingly begrudgingly exiting his 90 day non-compete,
06:08 posting a hilarious video on Instagram, dubbing his voice over a clip of Godzilla awakening
06:11 from slumber.
06:12 There's a lot of Godzilla today.
06:14 And Transformers.
06:15 Luke Owen is jizzing somewhere quietly in a room.
06:19 So does that confirm that Mace's dream Godzilla match is in fact just a match with Shelton
06:23 Benjamin?
06:24 Maybe.
06:25 Lastly, we've finished the round up with perhaps the most bombastic of all announcements,
06:28 as Mustafa Ali showed his creative flair that he rarely got to show in WWE by teasing a
06:33 whole heap of matches for 2024.
06:36 In a very well produced video posted to social media that mimicked the political vignette
06:40 he did in NXT before his release, Ali announced a whole 2024 campaign with a video that potentially
06:46 teased a move to AEW among a bunch of other things.
06:50 Ali showed off a bunch of stars who he seemingly is very keen to face, including Kazuchika
06:54 Okada, Matt Cardona, Mike Bailey, Vikingo, TMDK and AEW stars Will Ospreay and Swerve
07:01 Strickland.
07:02 And Ali's confirmed indie date sees him competing for many different promotions such
07:05 as Progress, Defy, GCW and more.
07:09 Bloody Rev Pro.
07:10 Rev Pro was on there.
07:12 Two such dates.
07:13 We'll also see Ali take on names featured in the video with a sure to be insane three
07:16 way against Vikingo and Gringo Loco announced for Dreamwave's February 10th event, as
07:20 well as a match with Mike Bailey for Prestige on February 25th.
07:25 Two crazy potential match of the year contenders confirmed for 2024 already.
07:29 You'd love to see it.
07:30 Now to a major new update on a story that could have major implications on both WWE
07:34 and AEW, that being the apparent interest of Warner Bros Discovery in potentially picking
07:39 up WWE Raw in 2024.
07:43 That also rhymed, it just happened.
07:45 As you will no doubt be aware, Raw's TV rights are the last on the negotiation table
07:49 for WWE at present, with Smackdown signing with the USA Network and NXT with CW.
07:54 While WBD had floated around as a potential home for Raw, it didn't seem all that likely.
07:59 That was until David Zuzlav's number one guy CM Punk stepped foot back in the company
08:04 and as Dave Meltzer put it on Wrestling Observer Radio, "opened a closed door".
08:09 With AEW's contract with Warner Bros Discovery also up in 2024, it truly is an uncertain
08:15 time for both companies in regards to a potential future on the Network.
08:19 Something that is only made more uncertain by a new development, that being the news
08:23 of a huge merger between Warner Bros Discovery and fellow entertainment juggernaut Paramount.
08:29 Speaking yesterday on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer gave us all some peace of mind on
08:33 how the merger could affect any potential WWE or AEW deals for Warner Bros Discovery
08:38 in 2024.
08:39 "They're in merger talks, the first stage.
08:41 I don't anticipate that whatever happens, I don't think that this potential merger
08:44 is going to affect potential WWE or AEW TV deals because it's going to take time to
08:50 put that together."
08:51 Meltzer then continued to explain that due to Warner Bros Discovery being a bigger company
08:54 financially it would be them still making the decisions, not new people from Paramount.
09:00 As for the status of WWE's potential future on Warner Bros Discovery, Meltzer also revealed
09:06 that a deal is majorly and absolutely still in play, and that will not be music to Tony
09:12 Carve's ears.
09:13 However Meltzer believes that AEW's lower cost compared to WWE's reported $387 million
09:19 asking price per year for Raw could play in TK's favour.
09:24 He said "In terms of cost per viewer, Raw is so much more expensive than AEW.
09:29 Even if AEW had a big raise, it'd still be cheaper per viewer."
09:34 Adding "Also, the AEW viewer is a 13% higher money earner than a WWE viewer.
09:41 There's that value too, which is rarely talked about.
09:44 I assume that means they buy more merchandise."
09:47 Although sane, Meltzer admits that WWE is always going to be number one, bringing in
09:51 more viewers and in turn making the station look better in the rankings of the TV stations
09:56 compared to what AEW can offer.
09:58 So which is it?
09:59 PR or cold hard cash?
10:00 Headline: AEW Star Finishes Up With The Company
10:01 Finishing up today we have news of an AEW star finishing up with the company.
10:07 How fitting.
10:08 The star is of course QT Marshall who we've spoken about before and if you've been keeping
10:11 up with the news has already made public that he is departing AEW with Tony Khan also confirming
10:17 as much.
10:18 Despite technically being a member of AEW up until his contract expiry on January 1st,
10:22 Fightful Select is reporting that Marshall has already effectively finished with the company.
10:28 According to the report, Marshall isn't a presence backstage and hasn't been at
10:32 any AEW shows in many weeks now.
10:34 And the future of Marshall in the company has been the subject of much speculation since
10:37 his announcement of his impending departure, with WWE a rumoured destination due to his
10:43 close friendship with Cody Rhodes and his reputation as being a bit of a jack of all
10:47 trades worker both on screen and backstage.
10:51 He wants to focus on the wrestling stuff though.
10:55 Despite many in WWE reportedly pushing for the company to sign Marshall, he is reportedly
11:00 adamant on continuing his in-ring career, something he had little opportunity to really
11:04 do in AEW and likely might not get to do in WWE either.
11:09 Another potential sign that he may be set to go on his own indie run of sorts, because
11:12 we had a report from Fightful that revealed that the former AAA Latin American Champion
11:17 plans to use his own Turnbuckle Championship Wrestling trademark.
11:21 We don't know how he's going to do that, but maybe he's starting his own promotion.
11:25 But make sure to stay tuned to WrestleTalk.com for any further updates.
11:28 Well that's it folks, happy Friday, happy Christmas, head on over to Chaotic Neutral
11:33 to watch our brand new D&D series which is starting today.
