00:00 Hello and welcome to the WrestleTalk News, I'm Luke Owen and this is wrestling news.
00:11 We kick off today's WrestleTalk News talking about the angle that closed out this week's
00:16 NXT, which did not sit well with a lot of the viewing audience.
00:20 Twitter was awash with fans calling the angle tasteless, tone deaf and inappropriate, some
00:24 even called it controversial.
00:26 And it's not just fans, as Fightful Select report that some in WWE agreed, thinking the
00:32 angle was controversial.
00:34 The angle in question saw Ridge Holland return to NXT and immediately injure Ilja Dragunov
00:39 by dropping him on his head with a DDT.
00:42 The NXT Champion was then stretched out of the building.
00:44 The reason for the controversy is because this plays off the real life injury to Big
00:49 E, who has been on the shelf since a botched belly to belly suplex by Ridge Holland back
00:53 in March of 2022 broke his neck.
00:56 That injury was so serious that Big E has revealed that doctors have advised him to
01:01 never wrestle again.
01:04 And given how popular Big E is, it's understandable that some fans took against NXT running an
01:08 angle that played off this very serious incident - especially as they played up Holland's
01:14 history with neck-based injuries as part of the storyline.
01:17 This also isn't the first time in the last few months that WWE have played off real life
01:22 injuries.
01:23 Since her return there have been several references to Nia Jax injuring her opponents in the past,
01:28 and they turn Xia Li accidentally giving an opponent a concussion from a stiff kick back
01:31 in NXT into her finishing move on the main roster.
01:35 But this is all a storyline.
01:38 It was actually filmed last week, and Fightful Select report everyone seemed happy with the
01:42 performance and camera work, and producers seemed pleased with the reaction the angle
01:47 got from the crowd.
01:48 Fightful Select add that WWE were aware that the audience would know this wasn't a real
01:53 life injury because the next set of NXT tapings started straight away.
01:57 It did help the viewership though as NXT fell again this week, pulling in 641,000 viewers
02:03 down 5% from last week.
02:05 The 18-49 demo was also down.
02:08 Maybe they need to send for the man like they did when they stacked the show with Cody Rhodes,
02:12 John Cena and The Undertaker that one time.
02:14 Following reports from Fightful Select that her contract with WWE is up in June of next
02:18 year and a new deal has not been signed yet, Lynch herself has revealed that WWE will likely
02:24 remain her home forever.
02:26 Speaking with Strutting From Gorilla, Lynch said of WWE, "I love the people, I love
02:30 the audience, and I love being able to have been an important part of change.
02:34 It's my home, it's where I was born as a professional wrestler, and it's where
02:39 I'll retire."
02:41 Her husband Seth Rollins also has his contract up in June and is rumoured to also be staying
02:45 with the company, so I think we can put away the "Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch to AEW
02:49 confirmed" memes for the time being.
02:52 Probably forever.
02:53 Before we get into the AEW Dynamite review, the first of our end of year awards season
02:57 videos kicked off yesterday over on WrestleTalk Podcast as myself, Oliver Davis and Dan Layton
03:02 counted down the best wrestlers of 2023.
03:05 There's a link for that in the video description down below, but now let's head over to Oliver
03:09 Davis for this week's AEW Dynamite review.
03:12 I'm Oli Davis, and now it's time for my review of the AEW Dynamite Holiday Bash…
03:20 in about 5 minutes.
03:21 Dynamite's final week of the main GOLD league matches opened both cold - as in there
03:27 was no intro credits - and hot, as it was Swerve Strickland vs Roosh.
03:32 And Roosh will kick you in the face.
03:35 Because this was a Roosh match, it was fantastically fast-paced, with non-stop back and forth
03:39 action.
03:40 Swerve worked over Roosh's knee, which awesomely gave way when he tried running to hit his
03:44 Bull's Horn finisher, and Roosh targeted Swerve's taped up shoulder.
03:47 The finish was terrific, as Roosh kicked out very angrily at one when Swerve hit a 450
03:52 on him like 'how dare you actually try to beat me'.
03:55 I'm still not convinced Roosh knows wrestling is predetermined.
03:59 Strickland followed that up with a Brain Buster and Stomp to win.
04:02 It meant that with 12 points, Swerve qualified for the GOLD league semi-final against Mox.
04:08 The intrigue now became about whether Jey White would beat Moxley.
04:12 Because if he did, that would put White in the semi-final too, making it a triple threat.
04:17 As Mox, Swerve and White would all be tied at 12 points, but each would've beaten each
04:24 other.
04:25 There's so many numbers I love tournaments.
04:26 Chris Jericho cut a serious promo backstage on Kenny Omega being hospitalised, meaning
04:31 he'll be out of AEW indefinitely, and the World's End tag title match is off.
04:36 Think as long as you need, Kenny.
04:38 And when you're ready, Jericho will be waiting for him with the Golden Jets.
04:42 We're trying to motivate Kenny's recovery, Chris, not make him depressed.
04:46 Mark Briscoe and Jey Lethal might both be losers in the Continental Classic, but only
04:50 one can be the Ultimate Loser.
04:54 Both with zero points heading into their final match, Mark and Jey had a really fun bout,
04:58 elevated by the crowd chanting for chairs, Mark throwing chairs in the ring, but the
05:03 referee always getting rid of them.
05:05 Lethal hit a Jey Driller, presumably out of respect for his departed friend, but it felt
05:09 like a heel mind game spot.
05:11 So Mark hit a Jey Driller of his own after a freaking burning hammer to win.
05:16 Mark Briscoe has been fantastic in this tournament.
05:18 I hope he gets to do something substantial afterwards.
05:22 After a video package of MJF getting inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame,
05:26 Amorlo again teasing he'll be the one to bring the Devil to his knees.
05:31 Which is now making me think it's all a misdirect, Amorlo will save MJF, taking out
05:35 the literal Devil we heard from Samoa Joe and Maxwell Jacob Friedman.
05:40 Considering how Hangman Page got taken out last week, and MJF has never been seen to
05:45 be attacked, Joe now has his suspicions about Max.
05:49 MJF replied, pointing out that Joe dropped the ball on protecting him.
05:53 Maybe Joe's the Devil.
05:54 I don't think that's a viable line of inquiry, Max.
05:58 Joe has quite a recognisable body shape that isn't the Devil's.
06:02 Retribution ran down to attack them, where Max and Joe easily threw them all out.
06:07 The main Devil goons got on the apron, and the lights cut to black.
06:10 Text appeared on the Tron asking "Where can you go?
06:13 Who can you trust?
06:15 Next week will you accept a challenge for your ROH Tag Team Championships?"
06:18 Are you a hero, Max?
06:20 Joe accepted, saying this is the only way to get to the Devil.
06:24 It was a decent segment, even if the Devil extras are getting less threatening by the
06:28 week.
06:29 But it was a backstage interaction later on that provided the coolest storyline development.
06:34 Max found a mask outside the Embassy's locker room, which caused a confrontation between
06:38 him and Swerve Strickland.
06:41 They reminisced about their history, driving around the country, trying to make it in this
06:45 business.
06:46 But while MJF went on to become World Champion, Swerve says he's been ducking him ever since
06:51 he joined AEW.
06:53 The topic of Hangman Page came up, which Max accused Swerve of being obsessed by, and
06:58 he used that as Exhibit A in Strickland and the Embassy actually being the Devil Squad.
07:03 Swerve said he's not the Devil, but if Max keeps waving that title in front of his face,
07:08 he'll be the one to bring him to hell.
07:11 Joe broke things up, having a prolonged stare down with Swerve.
07:14 Just like the Hangman Page backstage interaction last week, this was a great way to suddenly
07:19 enter Strickland into the Maxverse, continuing his elevation by having him near the World
07:24 Champion.
07:25 And if the Devil ends up being Swerve, I'm totally fine with that.
07:29 Rheo beat Sarea next in a No. 1 contenders match for Tony Storm's women's title.
07:33 The match was fine, but at only 7 and a half minutes, it was neither enough to protect
07:37 Sarea in defeat or make Rheo look that impressive in beating her.
07:41 The best thing actually happened on commentary, where Tony called Taz her favourite landlord
07:45 for human duplex machine.
07:53 Rheo managed to get the better of Storm afterwards, so Mariah May made the save, where Tony didn't
07:58 seem to like being upstaged.
08:00 Tony Schiavone read out a pre-prepared statement from Christian saying how he'll be on collision
08:04 to answer Copeland's challenge.
08:06 Somehow, despite not even being there, Christian got loads of heat.
08:10 Obviously the episode's best matches were in the Continental Classic, but hot damn.
08:15 Roderick Strong and Commander was fun.
08:17 Commander got so much rotation off Roddy's End of Heartache finisher, it turned into
08:21 a gutbuster.
08:23 Strong cut a promo in victory afterwards, again declaring Max is the Devil.
08:26 In a lovely moment during the at-break, Tony Khan announced Jim Ross to his hometown crowd,
08:31 making his return for the first time in several weeks.
08:33 It was to call a great main event between JY and Jon Moxley, where White had to beat
08:37 Mox to get into the semi-final.
08:39 While I really enjoyed the match, I would've opened the episode with White beating Mox,
08:43 which would give Strickland both a main event spot and the babyface psychology of having
08:48 to win the match to join the semi-final.
08:51 Giving the underdog story to 'massive heel' White never effectively played into the match.
08:56 Nevertheless, this was terrifically worked, with White working over Mox's leg, even
09:00 doing a rare bit of C2 cheating, hitting it with a chair behind the ref's back.
09:04 Then bang on the 15 minute call, Moxley hit a stomp, but White flipped out of the paradigm
09:09 shift to hit a Blade Runner to win.
09:12 While Swerve watched on from the ramp, as White did the Na Na Dance, and then hurt Mox's
09:15 leg even more, giving an extra layer to their semi-final match.
09:19 It's a great ending to this stage of the GOLD LEAGUE, and it continues AEW's building
09:25 of White and Swerve as main eventers.
09:27 This week's Dynamite is 77%.
09:30 But how did a legal case from a little wrestling promotion cause WWE to fire their top legal
09:36 guy, stop signing Roman Reigns' cousins, and maybe even preventing the Elite from leaving
09:41 Watch on to find out more.
