00:00 You are a true titan and pioneer of daytime television and you are rightfully being honored tonight with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Daytime Emmys.
00:08 How does that feel?
00:09 Well, Gregory Peck had a great line. When he was awarded something like this he said it had an ominous ring to it.
00:19 Oh no, it's a celebration. Over 50 years.
00:24 It's great. It was unexpected. I was kind of bowled over. In fact, when the president of the academy called me I thought it was a prank.
00:32 Come on. How do you feel?
00:36 I feel great. I mean, I feel humble and I've always been a great fan and supporter of the academy.
00:45 I was the chapter president in the New York chapter for many years and so I know what work the academy does and I'm just so proud to be a part of it.
00:55 Amazing. You know, over 50 years of Maury on television. When all is said and done at the end of the day and people 200, 300 years from now are discovering you, your work, your show, what do you hope they remember most?
01:08 They're going to remember you are the father, you are not the father. That's what they're going to remember.
01:13 Maury, who have you been talking to?
01:16 E.T. In the old days, way, way back when I used to do a current affair in the late 80s and 90s, this was our biggest competition.
01:26 Tonight, no competition, just love and admiration for our lifetime achievement award winner.
01:33 We're just talking about this amazing award that is being bestowed upon Maury tonight.
01:37 Over 50 years on daytime TV, you were saying, what do you hope people remember most about your legacy?
01:43 You are the father, you are not the father.
01:47 That's it. And you know what? He's my baby daddy.
01:52 I am your baby daddy.
01:55 That is very true. I do have to know, all these years later, is that the number one thing that people say to you when they see you out at restaurants and on the street?
02:03 Yeah.
02:04 How do you react when you hear that?
02:06 I react very favorably because if you're on television every day and nobody recognizes you, you're in trouble. No ratings.
02:16 So I've always been very generous with my time in public because I believe in that.
02:24 Well, the people who don't do that, who are stinky, when you go up and say, oh, I saw you on or I saw you in this movie, you hate them.
02:34 They're not nice.
02:38 Everybody always, wherever we go, they're saying, say it, say it, Maury, say it.
02:45 And you do, which makes you a real rock star.
02:48 2024 is a big year for the both of you for a couple of reasons. First of all, your 40th wedding anniversary.
02:55 Oh my God, really?
02:56 Did you even realize it?
02:58 Yeah.
02:59 Last year?
03:00 Well, you know, 39, you know, it's like years ago, Jack Benny, the comedian, always said that he was always 39.
03:09 So maybe we can just say 39 for the rest of our lives.
03:13 Let's go for 40.
03:14 40?
03:15 I have to tell you, it's so sweet. You're holding hands. You're a real example to people like me. I'm only four years in.
03:22 What is the secret to a 40 year long, love lasting marriage?
03:27 We have a differing view of that.
03:29 I always said that no matter what the argument or discussion was during the day, when the head hit the pillow, it's over.
03:38 Connie, on the other hand.
03:40 I still want to argue in the morning.
03:43 You know, I'm not done.
03:45 Who usually wins in that battle?
03:47 I do.
03:49 Team Connie all day.
03:51 Okay, so big wedding anniversary next year. Do you have any plans? Have you started thinking about how you may celebrate?
03:56 I think we haven't been out of the country since COVID.
04:01 We're going to go back to Italy, one of our favorite places.
04:05 Okay, but I'm taking my mask.
04:07 Okay.
04:08 Don't get sick.
04:09 And then not only do you have a big wedding anniversary next year, you're celebrating a big birthday in January.
04:15 Oh, God, yes.
04:16 When you think back on what a remarkable life, eight plus decades, what are you most proud of?
04:23 Can we tell them how old you're going to be?
04:25 I'll be 85 in about a month.
04:27 Can you believe it? And he's had no work, and I've had no work, and there's no fake news here.
04:36 No, absolutely not.
04:37 Those cosmetic surgeons didn't make any money off of us.
04:41 My final question for you. It's been a little over a year since the Maury show left the air.
04:47 How are you doing in retirement? Do you have the itch? What would it take to get you back on our TV screens?
04:52 You know, I always said there are two things.
04:57 I would come back to do a lie detector test between Cardi B and Nicki Minaj.
05:03 I've offered that.
05:05 And also, I'm ready to do a paternity test on Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
05:12 Do you want to officially ask them? You're on ETV.
05:14 I've already asked them over and over again.
05:17 I think Woody would be partial to it, and apparently Matthew is on the fence.
05:23 What is it going to take? A phone call from either of them?
05:26 It would be. I'd come at prime time. I'd even dye my hair back.
05:31 You deserve this award and then some. Congratulations.
05:34 Thank you, Margie.
