Jose Napoles turned pro in his native Cuba in 1958. When Fidel Castro banned professional boxing in 1961, Napoles moved to Mexico and resumed his career there. He became undisputed welterweight champion in 1969 when Curtis Coke retired in the 13th round. Napoles won a rematch with Cokes, and made two more successful defences. Napoles was stopped in the fourth round by Billy Backus in 1970. Napoles regained his titles six months later in a rematch with Backus, stopping him in the eighth round. He made six more defences of his belts before challenging Carlos Monzon for the undisputed middleweight title, and losing in six rounds. Napoles made four more defences of his welterweight crown.

John H Stracey turned pro in 1969 and won his first 16 bouts. He drew his 17th bout against Frankie Lewis, then won his next six fights. He lost on points to Marshall Butler, then won another three fights. Stracey then challenged for the vacant British title and was disqualified against Bobby Arthur. Stracey won the renatch nine months later, but never defended his British title because most of his opponents were not from the UK. Stracey won the European title in 1974, when he stopped Roger Menetrey in the eighth round. Napoles won his next five bouts, including a seventh round stoppage of contender Ernie Lopez.
