Nigel Benn won the WBC super middleweight title in 1992, when he stopped Mauro Galvano in the fourth round in Italy. Benn beat Galvano on points in a rematch in the second defence of his title. His fourth defence was a rematch with Chris Eubank who had previously taken Benn's WBO middleweight title thanks to a ninth round stoppage. Eubank had since won the WBO super middleweight title. This fight ended in a draw, and both boxers keeping their respective belts. In his most recent defence, Benn had stopped former WBC middleweight champion Gerald McClellan in the tenth round. This brutal fight had left McClellan with severe life changing injuries.

Vincenzo Nardiello was an outstanding amateur boxer who was cheated of glory at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul by the same judges and opponent who robbed Roy Jones of victory in the next round of the tournament. In 1991, Nardiello suffered his first loss as a pro when he challenged Víctor Córdoba for the WBA super middleweight title in 1991 and was stopped in the 11th round. Nardiello won and lost the European super middleweight title twice, the second time he won the title was a points win over Mauro Galvano in 1993.
