After an outstanding amateur career, Donal Curry turned pro in 1986. He won his first world title in his 16th fight, when he outpointed Jun-Suk Hwang for the vacant WBA belt. In his first defence, Curry stopped Roger Stafford in the first round. Next, was a second bout with Marlon Starling, and another points win that also earned him the inaugural IBF belt. Six bouts later, Curry took Milton McCrory's WBC belt with a second round stoppage. This was followed by a second round knockout of Eduardo Rodriguez. Curry was now 25-0 with 20 KOs, and was considered a superstar in the making. There was even talk of matching him with Marvin Hagler.

Lloyd Honeyghan turned pro a couple of weeks before Curry. He won the British welterweight title in his 16th contest, with a points verdict over Cliff Gilpin. Two fights later he outpointed Harold Brazier. After another three bouts, he was European champion, beating Gianfranco Rosi in the third round. One boxer they had in common was Roger Stafford, who lasted until the ninth round with Honeyghan. He stopped Sylvester Mittee in the eighth round to win the Commonwealth belt. He was 27-0 with 18 KOs.
