00:00 He's a terrific player.
00:01 He's a terrific player.
00:03 I think I saw that he's on the Naismith watch list
00:06 for National Player of the Year.
00:07 He's well-deserved. He's a terrific player.
00:09 Talk a little bit about Day-Day
00:13 and the group together for the first time tonight.
00:17 How beautiful you saw from --
00:19 you had them out there together, or kind of --
00:23 Searching.
00:25 I mean, a lot of searching tonight, right?
00:26 I mean, second half when we get down, double figures,
00:31 16, I think, at one point, I look up.
00:34 I thought maybe giving another ball-handler
00:35 would help us enter the ball.
00:38 We've talked about doing that, and I thought, I mean,
00:40 defensively, there's just no activity,
00:43 so maybe a little more quickness,
00:44 and Gissel's so active with his hands.
00:47 I thought maybe that could make a big difference.
00:50 So we tried that.
00:52 I thought we made a little run there to cut it back to six,
00:55 if I'm not mistaken.
00:58 But, you know, again, foul and one in.
01:02 I think we cut it to six, and I want to say that Gissel
01:04 fouled at four or five feet on the next possession.
01:08 But, yeah, I think it's something
01:11 that we're going to have to do at times
01:13 to have more ball-handling, decision-making,
01:15 play-making on the court.
01:19 And we tried it tonight,
01:20 and, again, there were some good moments of it.
01:22 There weren't -- you know, we were searching.
01:24 We were searching defensively, too, Chad.
01:26 I mean, what did you see?
01:28 Run and jump, one-three-one, diamond and one press,
01:32 two and threes on the output.
01:33 We're just sitting here, like, what can we do to try to get --
01:35 we can't get a stop, and that's unacceptable.
01:39 Like, that's unacceptable.
01:40 We're not going to be the team we're capable of being
01:42 if we've got to search defensively
01:44 to try to get a stop.
01:45 At some point, we've got to stop, we're going to get free stops.
01:49 Chad, was the atmosphere good for you in the long run?
01:54 Yeah, the atmosphere was terrific.
01:56 It was terrific.
01:58 That's a great college basketball atmosphere.
02:01 Both fan bases, you could tell, were present and engaged.
02:04 We didn't give our fans quite enough to cheer about,
02:07 but it was a terrific atmosphere.
02:10 What's that like off the field?
02:16 Do you feel like there's more of a --
02:20 We've got a long way to go.
02:23 I've known that.
02:24 You know, I'm not making excuses.
02:27 That doesn't mean that it should be a 14-point loss
02:31 in a neutral site game.
02:34 I'm not -- there's no excuse for that, okay?
02:38 But we've got a long way to go.
02:39 If we'd have won tonight, I'd have told you the same thing.
02:41 You might believe me a little bit more now.
02:43 But we've got a long way to go.
02:45 We have, I believe, good kids, high character.
02:50 I believe we have talent.
02:51 I believe we have some experience.
02:53 So we're going to really improve.
02:56 But I'm really pissed off.
03:00 I'm really pissed off.
03:02 We have a long way to go. We've got a lot of work to do.
03:03 We've got a lot of things to figure out with this team,
03:06 and I know we'll do that.
03:08 But tonight, that's unacceptable.
03:11 What are the chances of the series continuing?
03:15 I don't know.
03:18 It's not something that I --
03:20 if I'm being -- I'm trying to just be honest up here.
03:23 I don't try to do the coach talk thing.
03:25 I'm not smart enough to speak in code.
03:27 A lot of them scheduling now is --
03:31 there's so many conference changes and league game change.
03:35 I mean, we're going to go to 20 league games next year.
03:37 There's challenges.
03:39 We're still waiting to hear that the Big 12 has talked about
03:41 maybe going to play some other games
03:43 in other countries at some point.
03:44 We have empties.
03:46 So it's not something that I don't want to do.
03:48 I think there's -- I think sometimes coaches say,
03:52 "Don't play local games because if you lose,
03:55 everybody's pissed off." I think that's a bunch of BS.
03:58 I mean, these games get you ready for league play.
04:00 You know, and the fact that people get all charged up
04:02 for them, that's good.
04:04 That's good for our growth.
04:05 I hate that we lost two of them this week.
04:08 That stinks, and it feels terrible.
04:10 But I'm not afraid of that.
04:12 We're not going to not want to play good teams locally
04:14 because we're worried about what the hell people will think.
04:17 That's a good game for Cincinnati.
04:19 So I'm not opposed to the game moving forward,
04:22 but the reasons why we could or couldn't
04:24 sometimes are hard to figure out
04:26 with all the changes in college basketball right now.
04:29 Wes, your concentration is probably good.
04:33 He's good. He's very, very good.
04:35 We had a very difficult time staying in front of him.
04:38 He creates so much for the team.
04:40 I haven't looked at his line yet,
04:41 but, gosh, six of 11, 14 of 14 from the free-throw line,
04:47 that's the part that was obvious to me, right, and three assists.
04:51 So it's hard because if you throw too many bodies at him,
04:54 he creates a lot.
04:56 They put him in action all night with homes,
05:00 and then he puts pressure on you at the front of the rim,
05:03 and he's just drawing fouls, drawing fouls, drawing fouls.
05:06 You know, we got to get better with our technique.
05:08 We got to take that challenge better, you know.
05:10 But, listen, it was like Bray comes out
05:13 and makes a bunch of threes,
05:14 and that was a big part of our scouting report
05:16 was to not let him shoot because he's an elite shooter.
05:19 He gets a lot of clean looks to start the game.
05:21 You know, we wanted to do a good job on Elvis,
05:23 and we obviously wanted to do a good job on Holmes,
05:25 and you look down, and all of them were good,
05:27 so we didn't do a damn good job guarding at all.
05:31 Any more?
