00:00 "Huge wrestling deals thought to be dead are back alive. Could WWE steal AEW's biggest
00:05 partner? Everything is about to change." I'm Pete Quinnell, and CM Punk might be
00:10 about to seriously harm AEW.
00:19 The phrase "everything is about to change" may be a little overused when it comes to
00:24 wrestling. You could even say that that has actually been accurate multiple times this
00:28 year in wrestling alone. Vince McMahon returning, The Merger with UFC, AEW All In, CM Punk being
00:33 fired, CM Punk being rehired and returning to WWE, but once again I must say, everything
00:39 is about to change.
00:40 The big ongoing story of 2023, and probably 2024 as well, is how both WWE and AEW are
00:47 looking to renegotiate their TV deals with various networks. AEW were reportedly keen
00:52 to stick with Warner Bros. Discovery as their home, WWE sold the rights to SmackDown to
00:56 USA Network and NXT has been confirmed to be going to CW, but Monday Night Raw still
01:01 hangs in the balance. And while its next location may have seemed somewhat arbitrary to most
01:05 viewers of the show, from a business perspective, everything is about to change.
01:09 Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio mentioned that WWE at one point has negotiated with
01:14 WBD, AEW's home for their shows currently, but that deal was said to be dead. But update,
01:20 it reportedly isn't. Meltzer noted that WWE and WBD have had another meeting, and
01:26 that deal that was thought to be dead is now back as an option, and the primary reason?
01:30 CM Punk.
01:31 Punk opened up what may have been a shut door, he's a significant player. Considering
01:36 Punk's staggering effect on the ratings for this week's Raw alone, it makes sense,
01:40 with the quarter hour for his segment getting a huge spike in viewership. And now Punk has
01:44 signed to the Raw brand, letting these potential networks for Raw know that Punk could be helping
01:49 their network every week. This could be part of the reason why it was advertised that CM
01:53 Punk would be facing Dominik Mysterio at a house show at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles,
01:58 as Meltzer speculated that WWE would be inviting all those network execs that they're trying
02:03 to court to that show to show off Punk and the potential ratings they could be bringing.
02:08 Meltzer noted that the belief is that Raw's network deal would be finalised soon, and
02:12 with WBD now back as an option, it's so hard to know how this will all play out. But
02:17 there's a lot more factors than just WBD being interested in Punk. It was also mentioned
02:22 on Observer Radio that the NXT deal with CW wasn't an exclusive deal, so CW could put
02:28 other wrestling onto their network if they wanted to. So if a similar deal is struck
02:32 with WBD, then Dynamite and Raw could live on the same network. But would WBD even want
02:38 to fork out that much cash for multiple wrestling programs?
02:41 WWE is apparently looking for $400 million per year for Monday Night Raw. AEW are also
02:47 looking for a sizable money increase to help them become profitable, with WBD being cash
02:51 strapped elsewhere in their business, it's highly unlikely they'll be able to fund
02:55 both. So if WWE go to WBD, AEW could find themselves without a network going into 2025
03:02 and significantly less bargaining power to get a new one. But as Meltzer points out,
03:06 WBD's highest priority right now isn't actually wrestling, it's the NBA, and how
03:10 much that ends up costing them will determine their interest in either wrestling show.
03:15 For what it's worth, AEW President Tony Khan spoke about his company's ongoing discussions
03:19 with WBD in a media call promoting Ring of Honor's final battle. "We've had really
03:23 good talks with Warner Bros. Discovery, had a great visit with them today, and we have
03:27 a really exciting relationship that has grown a lot over the years and has expanded for
03:31 AEW." But as many different DC film directors will tell you since Discovery merged with
03:35 Warner Bros. and David Zaslav became its CEO, the only thing being in "really good talks"
03:41 with WBD is a guarantee of is… everything is about to change.
03:46 And now it's time for a word from this video's sponsor.
03:48 Hey Pete! Hey Oli.
03:50 How you doing? I'm doing fine, thank you.
03:53 Should I do my ad read now? Are you not going to…
03:59 Going to what, Pete? Do your acronyms, the new names for the company?
04:03 Don't be silly Pete, that was a one off. A one off? You've been doing it all year!
04:08 How could I have been doing it for the whole year? That's so many to come up with. What,
04:11 like I can just off the top of my head say something like 'hairy slapping brutal chumps'
04:16 as the new name? That's an HSBC, you're doing it right
04:18 now Oli! Or maybe…
04:20 Attack, Tackle… and Tackle. That's AT&T, it's so forced. All of this
04:27 is so forced. What about 'Great Enormous Internet Crash
04:30 Optics'? GEICO? That's an acronym.
04:34 Turns out it is, Pete. You've just gotta do a little googling.
04:36 You've been looking these up. Yes I have. Like this one. Voluptuous Pineapples.
04:41 Make it. It doesn't make sense. It spells VPN, but
04:46 it doesn't make sense. Surfshark VPN is an online tool that keeps
04:50 you safe wherever you browse by masking your important information. Which means you can
04:55 check sensitive stuff like your bank account, even on public Wi-Fi. Surfshark keeps your
05:00 location and download history private and encrypted, meaning you can send or receive
05:03 files securely too, like my ongoing spreadsheet of three letter acronyms for the company.
05:08 On top of that, Surfshark also allows you access to any of 3,200 servers in over 100
05:15 countries - allowing you to fool your phone, laptop or tablet into thinking you're in
05:19 a different country. Meaning you Americans can still get the old WWE Network. I love
05:25 you Superior Search Function! If you click the link in the description
05:29 down below or visit Surfshark.deals/wrestletalk, you can get 83% off plus three months for
05:35 free when you use the code WRESTLETALK on checkout. That's Surfshark.deals/wrestletalk
05:40 and use the promo code WRESTLETALK for 83% off and three months for free.
05:48 Is it over? Are we done, Oli? Are we finished? Is it done now?
05:52 Why are you being such a fun sponge, Pete? I put a lot of effort into these, constantly
05:57 annoying you like this. Ok, ok, you know what, fine. Maybe I was
06:02 being a little harsh. It seems fun. Maybe I can give it a go.
06:08 Ok, what about Pete's Blemond Sausage? Pete's Blemond Sausage. That's the worst
06:17 name I've ever heard. That is a ridiculous name, Pete.
06:22 Not only is it already the name of a very famous American TV channel, it's also just
06:27 like a bad name for a company. Pete's Blemond Sausage. That doesn't sound like the name
06:32 of a successful video production company at all, Pete. It's embarrassing. You've embarrassed
06:37 me. You've embarrassed yourself. You've embarrassed this channel.
06:42 You know what, Pete? Let's never do this again. But that's what I've wanted this
06:46 whole time. Silence, Pete. From this day forth, there'll
06:49 be no more three letter initialisation naming of this company. You've ruined it.
06:53 I'm Oli Davis, and it's Thursday, you know what that means…
07:01 My review of AEW Dynamite Winter is coming in about 5 minutes. Because Winter just came.
07:10 There was no time for normal opening credits, as Samoa Joe had worked out who the Devil
07:15 was. There was a broken beer bottle at the scene of the crime, and it smelt of Stetsons
07:20 and Disappointment. It can only be Adam Page. Stetsons and Disappointment. The new parfum
07:27 de toilette from Hangman. Hangman Page said, actually, no. He doesn't
07:32 care about the MJF and Adam Cole bromance, the laser tag or the whodunit. Joe had a great
07:37 return line, saying he's not out here as jury, he's already decided. He's the executioner.
07:43 But just before they came to blows, Roderick Strong interrupted them by yelling 'SAMOA!'
07:49 Protesting Max is clearly the Devil. Hangman hit Strong, leading into their really
07:54 good opening match, which Page eventually won by taking out the Kingdom on the outside
07:58 and hitting a Dead Eye - a much more targeted finisher to Roddy's neck, actually quite
08:04 vulnerable. This is amongst the coolest the Hangman has ever looked. I loved this whole
08:09 opening Max First segment, which has created such intrigue and three dimensional characters,
08:14 it can sustain itself even without MJF there.
08:18 Next up came the night's first Continental Classic match - Brodie King vs Andrade.
08:22 Wait a second, you're not gold, you're blue. Dabba deeba da die.
08:28 The first blue dabba deeba da die match on Dynamite was really decent, a steadily building
08:32 one that reminded me of Andrade's NXT title main event matches. It was just missing a
08:37 tiny Zelina Vega hitting Hurricanranas off the ring apron.
08:40 The finish was superb, as Andrade exposed a bit of the top turnbuckle and reversed a
08:44 Brodie superplex attempt into a DDT onto it. Andrade capitalised by hitting an El Idolo
08:50 DDT for the win. The advertised in advance Von Erick's appearance
08:53 was just a backstage segment to set up Kevin's kids teaming with Orange Cassidy on Rampage.
08:58 I got so excited when Kenny Omega's music hit.
09:01 And then Excalibur said "next we'll hear from the Golden Jets". I remember Chris
09:06 Jericho is teaming with him, and I got sad. But in the interest of fairness, Omega was
09:11 also pretty bad in this segment. Kenny has quite an informal way of cutting
09:15 promos - which work great in the rambling post-show speeches in New Japan, where not
09:19 many people in the audience speak English, or the campy insider patter of being the Elite.
09:24 But that style doesn't always translate to in-ring. It meant that his littler sides,
09:29 while good, like calling Chris' leather waistcoat a Jerichoat, sometimes spoke over
09:34 the other people in the segment and fell a little flat.
09:37 You're gonna fall in flat, Segway. This was all to set up the Golden Jets vs Big
09:50 Bill and Ricky Starks - the tag champions who are so good, they don't even have a
09:54 team name. So Jericho tried to give them one. Erm, like
09:58 Big Billy Starks. Which got something worse than booze. The dreaded non-reaction. Even
10:05 Ricky said that felt kinda flat. The best lines were weirdly about Enzo Amore,
10:10 with Omega referencing Big Bill's old firm faction, saying it was actually 'soft'
10:15 - spell SWAFT - and that Starks was just a better dressed, less charismatic version of
10:20 Enzo. Omega did his adieu catchphrase to mercifully
10:23 end the segment, but Jericho wanted one last line and screamed 'December 30th' over
10:27 the music to remind people when the pay-per-view match was.
10:30 It's time for your one compulsory women's match!
10:33 Rheo beat Ruby Soho in 8 minutes, with half of that in a commercial break. It's a disappointing
10:38 follow up after last week, which had a really good match, but got time between Tony Storm
10:42 and Sky Blue. Ruby and Rheo could've done the same if they were given the space to do
10:46 so, which would've been far more effective at getting over Rheo's return and protecting
10:51 Soho in defeat. Nothing against J Lethal, but his inclusion
10:54 in the C2 has been the only major negative for me. Given his Team TNA booking throughout
10:59 the year, I found it way too predictable he was just there to lose every match. Which
11:04 he did, meaning this match had even fewer stakes with Lethal already eliminated.
11:09 At least that was used to benefit Roosh, who got a strong win with the quickest match of
11:13 the tournament, although that would be more impressive if it was actually against a credible
11:17 opponent. He neatly choked out Lethal, just like how Mox did to him the previous week.
11:22 Roosh definitely holds a grudge. To him, wrestling is real.
11:26 Lethal looked totally dejected walking up the ramp afterwards with an uncharacteristically
11:30 sombre Team TNA. Jay White and Mark Briscoe faced next, where
11:34 Jay needed to win to keep his top two Gold League hopes alive, which provided some great
11:39 stakes, although it would've been better if Mark also had something to lose, as he
11:43 was ruled out with his defeat last week. The match was really good, though, with Mark's
11:47 smash mouth pace rather than Jay's prolonged heel psychology. White got his knees up on
11:51 the Froggy Bow, hitting a Blade Runner to win. More than making up for the two predictable
11:55 Gold League results, however, was the show's main event.
11:59 Which, like Braun Strowman at a BBQ, had all the stakes. The undefeated Swerve Strickland,
12:05 who has so much star power and momentum, he feels like the tournament's main character
12:09 going against the other most strongest booked competitor, the also undefeated Jon Moxley.
12:15 And for me, there was another shared stat - their Texas Deathmatch encounters with Hangman
12:21 Page this year, haunting everything they've done since like a beer drinking ghost.
12:26 The crowd recognised the occasion, and rose to it themselves, giving the match rapturous
12:30 chanting before they'd even locked up. They were behind both guys, but mostly Swerve,
12:35 so Mox worked a little bit more heel, targeting Strickland's taped up right shoulder - another
12:40 mark from the Hangman. Mox even went for the heel countout victory
12:43 at one point, before revealing it was a truck. Hitting the stomp just before the 15 minute
12:48 time call, he transitioned into a choke, an armbar, but Swerve got to the ropes. In frustration,
12:53 Mox got a chair. A lapse of judgement that let Swerve get back on top, hitting a stomp
12:58 outside and in for Mox to shockingly kick out. Swerve went for the JML driver, but Mox
13:04 countered with a cover for the referee to count the pin, even though Strickland's
13:09 left shoulder was clearly off the mat. Taz immediately called that out, meaning it
13:15 could be intentional to protect Strickland. While we all wanted him to win, and maybe
13:19 he should've, this doesn't end Swerve in the tournament.
13:22 AEW can now book him in an even more babyface comeback story way, with a very tense final
13:27 week that will see Mox vs White and Roosh vs Swerve, where Strickland needs to win.
13:32 That'll set up a rematch with Moxley in the semifinal, where he could win there. Or
13:36 he could've just booked him insanely strongly from the start, and had him beat Moxley here
13:40 and in the semis. Just like how he beat Hangman twice too.
13:45 But there's no time for that fantasy booking speculation. The show wasn't done there.
13:50 The overarm wasn't for our first time limit draw. It was for the Devil's goons to attack
13:54 Hangman Page backstage, where the Devil himself got out a car to watch on. Two of them chokeslam
14:01 Page onto the windscreen, which begs the question, how's the Devil going to drive them all
14:06 home? He's just busted his own car windscreen. And also a real glass windscreen.
14:13 SEND FOR THE PUNK. IT'S VERY JACK PERRY. This week's Dynamite is 78%. Now go watch
14:20 my breakdown of why CM Punk wants to take over NXT.
14:25 (upbeat music)
