Chris Tabor Recaps Loss to Saints
Transcript
00:00 were you able to find these silver linings in the tape going back and looking at it?
00:05 And what do you think the biggest lesson you probably got out of this game was?
00:11 I would still stick by my statement with regards to, yes, I don't like to lose.
00:16 Once you dig into the tape, the tape will talk to you.
00:19 Just have to listen to it.
00:20 There were some things that the guys did well.
00:23 And I think probably an area that we want to improve upon is just the, and we talked
00:30 about it, is just the self-inflicted stuff.
00:32 I think that's the hardest part for me.
00:38 Just in my own area.
00:39 I will always tip my hat to the opponent.
00:42 No question.
00:44 But when we make mental errors that hurts our team, those are tough to swallow.
00:51 Now with that being said, what are you going to do?
00:55 You got to go back to work.
00:56 You got to keep coaching it.
00:58 Points of emphasis and work to get better.
01:01 You're never going to get those plays back.
01:04 And I understand that.
01:05 But we got to improve on things like that.
01:09 Thanks.
01:10 All right, let's go to Alex Zietlow, followed by David Newton.
01:14 Hi, Chris.
01:16 There were five, six, seven shots.
01:21 They all took over 20 yards in the passing game.
01:23 A couple of them came on third and fourth down.
01:27 Were those in-game spur-of-the-moment decisions or was throwing deeper priority going in?
01:33 No, I think you're always looking to take shots when you can.
01:37 They obviously played a lot of, I mean, really just played man-to-man the whole game.
01:40 So you're going to be able to take some shots there.
01:43 We didn't connect when we wanted to.
01:46 And that's another area that we got to improve upon.
01:50 But it's just one of those things.
01:52 Unfortunately, we didn't convert enough on some of those third and fourth downs.
01:59 And I think there's a lot of things that go into that.
02:04 Guys just making the catch here or there.
02:08 Sometimes you can look at some other things also.
02:10 But we got to improve in those areas.
02:14 Just to follow up on that, when you are running the ball so well, is it kind of going through
02:22 your mind of, "Hey, I have to do my part to develop Bryson, to get him comfortable
02:29 throwing the ball deep"?
02:30 Is that part of the calculus when you're making those calls in the game?
02:34 I think in-game stuff, you're always...
02:35 I don't think you think like that about in-game.
02:37 I think you're thinking about, "Hey, what's it going to take to win the game?
02:41 What do we need to do in this particular situation?
02:43 What are they given?"
02:44 We think maybe we have a match up here or there that maybe we can take advantage of.
02:47 And I think that's how you're thinking about in-game calls, I would say.
02:51 Thank you.
02:52 Hey, Coach.
02:54 David Newton here.
02:56 I want you to speak to your decision to give the team today off.
03:01 Is that just to give them a chance to catch their breath on what's been a long season?
03:05 And did you give the coaches the same time off, or is that just for players only?
03:09 It's for players only.
03:10 It was something that I had decided upon.
03:13 You just have to, I think, read your team, read the room.
03:17 And sometimes getting away and just clearing your mind is a good solution to having the
03:28 same routine all the time, if that makes sense.
03:33 I'll look forward to seeing the guys again on Wednesday.
03:36 The thing about it is you say that you're off, but you do see them in the building.
03:40 A lot of guys, they come in and get their lift.
03:41 They're doing their routine.
03:43 They're getting treatment.
03:45 So you do, you see quite a bit of them.
03:47 I mean, I've had a few guys already up in my office watching tape.
03:51 So I think sometimes people hear the word day off, they think, "Hey, we don't see anybody."
03:59 You actually see everybody.
04:00 I guess it would be another way of saying we don't have any formal meetings.
04:03 That might be a great way to put it.
04:05 Right.
04:06 And like among those that have shown up today, can you address a few of those?
04:10 Like is Bryce one of those that showed up today and some of the guys, your other leaders,
04:15 Burns, those type guys?
04:16 I don't want to comment on who's all been in because I don't see everybody.
04:19 I'm in my office.
04:21 So I see some guys that come see me or I have to go down and make my rounds through the
04:26 training room to find out what's going on.
04:29 But I know for a fact a lot of guys are in, and that's a typical Monday in the National
04:35 Football League.
04:36 Thanks a lot.
04:37 Appreciate it.
04:38 All right, let's go to Joe Person followed by Jeff Hawkins.
04:43 Hey, Chris, on the block ton or the fumble, whatever they call it, it looked like you
04:51 had two guys in the block in the A gap and leaving the B gap open.
04:57 Could you take us through how that happened?
04:59 Yeah, pretty simple.
05:02 We had a man not perform his responsibility on the play, and that's what took place.
05:10 I think, unfortunately, plays like that in special teams are usually a result of someone
05:17 just making a busted assignment.
05:19 It's unfortunate, but more importantly, it can't happen.
05:25 And I think that's the thing that we got to work to get cleaned up because now once you
05:30 do that and you put it on tape, I always say that there's blood in the water for a good
05:35 well, until the end of the season.
05:37 I always say four weeks.
05:38 So we have the what I call the four week stink on us.
05:43 And Johnny took a shot on that play.
05:46 How's he feeling the day after?
05:48 He's doing fine.
05:50 Everything checked out good, so we'll be in good shape there.
05:54 Greetings, coach.
05:58 On the issues with the passing game, is the play calling trending too much on in-breaking
06:03 routes?
06:04 It appears the cornerbacks are sitting on the inside on the passing place.
06:09 I don't know if I'd get that specific with it.
06:11 That's a good question.
06:13 But as we talked about earlier a little bit there with Alex, we took a lot of deep shots
06:18 also, not just always in-breaking routes.
06:20 I know that we had some nice conversions that we had a conversion there to Adam on the outside
06:24 on out-breaking route.
06:27 I know we tried and just missed Mingo down the middle there.
06:33 So I would say that in the passing game, they're still utilizing all field zones.
06:37 All right, we've got time for a few more.
06:43 Let's go to Skylar Callahan and finish up with Joe Person.
06:46 Hey, Chris, you've mentioned a couple of times how continuing to play Bryce can benefit him
06:53 in a lot of ways.
06:54 I know a lot of people are kind of questioning the decision behind that and whether or not
07:00 Andy should maybe start to maybe protect Bryce.
07:02 But what do you think about that whole decision and what he can really benefit from?
07:07 Well, I think one way to become a better football player is playing football.
07:13 That's a pretty simple statement.
07:18 The only way you're going to gain experience in the National Football League is by playing.
07:24 I have a tremendous amount of confidence in Bryce.
07:29 And I know that there's games and plays that he's going to want back, but no, that hasn't
07:36 come into play.
07:37 It has not.
07:40 Chris, you mentioned that throw to Mingo.
07:47 Is that one he's got to have?
07:50 On that series, Jonathan Vilma doing the color said that he thought Bryce looked uncomfortable
07:56 in the pocket and was kind of bouncing on his feet rather than getting his feet set
08:00 under.
08:01 He had to slide over just a little bit and deliver the throw.
08:05 We didn't connect on it.
08:07 And I think that if we obviously connect on the play, then maybe the commentary is he
08:11 did a nice job sliding in the pocket and delivering the football.
08:14 All right, thanks, Coach.
08:17 Thanks, everybody.
