00:00 I covered the 1993 Golden Bears for the Oakland Tribune.
00:06 It was a talented team, fun team to watch play.
00:09 They played hard, they had talent in a lot of different positions.
00:14 The offensive line was real good with a couple of guys playing in the NFL.
00:18 Dave Barr was a very underrated quarterback in the annals of Cal football, really good.
00:25 Lindsey Chapman was a hard running back.
00:28 They had capable receivers.
00:30 They had Jarrett Willer was a star linebacker.
00:32 Eric Zumwalt was conference safety.
00:35 It was a good team.
00:37 And then when Barr got hurt midseason, they just couldn't do anything offensively.
00:42 And they kind of went on a long swoon, lost four games in a row.
00:45 But they got healthy and they came back and they won the final three regular season games.
00:51 And then they clobbered Iowa in the first Alamo Bowl, 37 to 3, finishing 9 and 4.
00:58 And it looked like it was the start of something that was going to carry over going forward.
01:04 But that was not to be.
01:05 They finished 4 and 7 the next year, inexplicably.
01:10 And a year after that, Gilbertson was out as coach.
01:14 Gilbertson was a good guy.
01:16 Everybody liked him.
01:18 He had been very successful as an offensive coordinator at Washington when they won a
01:22 national championship in 1991.
01:23 He seemed like a good fit for Cal.
01:27 But it just wasn't.
01:28 I think he was a better coordinator than he was a head coach.
01:32 Maybe because he was just a nice guy.
01:34 I don't know.
01:35 But he wasn't Bruce Snyder, real organized, a guy who was definitely in charge.
01:41 Gilby, as everyone called him, was just a good guy and unfortunately couldn't get it
01:46 done at Cal.
01:48 But he had that one year where 9 and 4, they were good.
