00:00 Now are you a fan of the artist formerly known as Timmy Tim?
00:03 Are you aware of Timmy Tim?
00:04 Look at your eyes, you just went like this.
00:06 You don't know about Timmy Tim?
00:07 - No, no ma'am.
00:08 - Okay, Timothy, how would we describe Timmy Tim?
00:11 - Say rah, rah, like a dungeon dragon.
00:14 Say rah, rah, like a dungeon dragon,
00:16 like a dungeon dragon, like a dungeon dragon.
00:18 - Is, you know, an awful digital footprint
00:21 that exists of a early onset ambitious rap career
00:24 that never materialized.
00:25 - It's him when he was younger,
00:27 showing off his skills from dancing to rapping.
00:30 And we have to credit part of the clips
00:32 being one of the reasons why Paul wanted you for Wonka.
00:36 - That's true.
00:37 I would be terrified to see Hugh's reaction.
00:39 I don't think he would sit alongside me
00:40 for any more interviews.
00:41 - So none of those moves or rap skills
00:44 made it to the Wonka set at all?
00:46 - No, I wouldn't say any rapping,
00:47 maybe some of the dancing, but no.
00:49 - I think his mind is like going wild right now.
00:51 - Oh, he's gonna kill me.
00:53 - No, no, no, no, no, no, Contra's gonna--
00:54 - Do you really wanna see it?
00:56 - Yeah, desperately.
00:56 - It really shows, I mean, your skill set is beyond,
00:59 there's nothing you can't do.
01:00 - Oh, I appreciate you saying that.
01:03 - Truly, I mean, a performer from youth to now.
01:06 - To now, thank you.
01:08 - Ladies and gentlemen, greetings to you all.
01:11 My name is Willy Wonka.
01:13 - What was the most challenging part of Wonka
01:15 when it came to like the singing and dancing?
01:17 - Probably that element of performance
01:18 'cause I've been doing sort of more serious movies
01:21 for 10 years, so this felt like,
01:23 sort of get back into that--
01:24 - Tippy-tip. - You know what I mean?
01:25 Trying to get back into that like loose, free form,
01:29 which took at least a couple of days.
01:31 It was kind of like playing with the tone
01:33 and seeing how Hugh was so open playing the Oompa Loompa
01:36 and Olivia Colman, who is wonderful in the movie,
01:38 and Keegan-Michael Key,
01:39 but Keegan has that Keene-Peele background,
01:41 so I was almost expecting him.
01:42 When I worked with Olivia, she's such a tremendous actress,
01:45 who I didn't know had a comedy background,
01:46 I didn't know that she started--
01:47 - Yeah, yeah, sitcom.
01:49 - So when I saw how loose she was
01:50 for lack of a better expression,
01:51 I thought, okay, I can open up here.
01:54 - Oh, I don't think I wanna hear that.
01:56 - Too late.
01:57 I've started dancing now.
01:58 Once we've started, we can't stop.
02:00 - Hugh, where were you more in your element?
02:03 The Oompa Loompa dance scenes
02:05 or the iconic holiday dance scene from "Love Actually"?
02:09 What moves were you more in your element?
02:11 - Oh, I think the Oompa Loompa.
02:12 It's a cross little dance, isn't it?
02:14 He's an angry little man going through the motions
02:17 just 'cause he can't sort of stop himself,
02:19 whereas in "Love Actually," I had to enjoy it.
02:21 - You had to enjoy it?
02:22 - No Englishman enjoys dancing.
02:23 - Well, I translated it while on screen.
02:25 - Oh, thank you.
02:25 - And so did the Oompa Loompa dance.
02:27 How much fun did you have
02:29 channeling the singing and the dancing?
02:31 - Yes, almost fun, though.
02:32 (laughing)
02:34 Almost fun.
02:34 I'm working with good people.
02:36 A lot of that dancing and singing
02:37 is from the 1973 film.
02:39 We just nicked it, really.
02:40 - You guys really seem like a family on screen.
02:43 Did you know the magic you were creating
02:45 early on in those table reads?
02:47 - You felt it from the sets.
02:48 I don't know if that's a bad answer,
02:49 but the sets were enormous and wondrous
02:52 and practically built,
02:53 and it felt like you were stepping into Harry Potter
02:56 or something, you know?
02:56 It felt like a lived-in world.
02:59 - I was barely involved on the set.
03:00 I did go a couple of times,
03:02 but mostly I was stuck in a studio
03:04 wearing my crown of thorns.
03:05 I know from Paddington experience
03:06 that Paul King makes a very loving, kind set
03:10 'cause he's a loving, kind man.
03:11 - So you're the funny little man who's been following me.
03:14 - Funny little man?
03:16 - How dare you?
03:17 I will have you know that I am a perfectly respectable size
03:20 for an Oompa Loompa.
03:21 - An Oompa what now?
03:22 - The dynamic duo.
03:23 We never knew we needed,
03:25 but now we need more of you two.
03:27 The on-camera chemistry was incredible,
03:31 but what's so interesting to know
03:32 is you really didn't have a lot of scenes together,
03:34 did you?
03:35 - No. - 'Cause you love CGI, right?
03:36 - Normally those sorts of things
03:37 would be done completely separately,
03:39 separate time, separate place,
03:41 but we did try and bond.
03:43 So they brought me in with all my headdress
03:45 covered in cameras and all the paraphernalia
03:47 and put me in a little tent just next to the set
03:50 so that we could hear each other.
03:53 And then between takes, we bonded, didn't we?
03:55 - Absolutely.
03:56 - How did you bond in between takes?
03:58 - Just as Hugh just put it with, you know, (beep) gossip.
04:01 - Send Wonka a message.
04:03 - Do not sell chocolate in this town!
04:06 - You're gonna get more than a bonk on the head.
04:09 - I love a bonk on the head.
04:10 - What is with me today?
04:12 - I heard you say yesterday that one of the reasons
04:15 why you wanted to do this project
04:17 is to work alongside such an incredible cast,
04:19 including this guy right here.
04:21 - Absolutely. - So how was that?
04:23 - It was a dream come true.
04:24 I felt like an honorary Brit.
04:25 I was with Hugh Grant, Olivia Colman, Rowan Atkinson.
04:28 This is an insane cast and very unique experience
04:31 as a young American to walk into this world.
04:35 Sort of this Paddington creative universe
04:36 that already existed.
04:37 - And everyone on the carpet yesterday
04:39 was singing his praises.
04:41 I mean, everyone says you have the it factor.
04:43 The world has fallen in love with you.
04:45 What do you make of this guy right here?
04:46 Did you fall in love with him too like the world has?
04:48 - I don't like anyone being too successful.
04:51 So I was a little anxious about Timothy Chalamet.
04:54 His graph was too vertical.
04:58 But I will say, he kind of deserves it.
05:01 He's a proper old-fashioned film star.
05:03 Camera loves him.
05:05 And he just, a natural film actor.
05:08 So it's enraging, really.
05:10 - Man, to hear those words,
05:11 what's going through your mind?
05:12 - That's crazy, to get that from you,
05:14 that's like getting a royal flush or something.
05:17 - Nothing that nice will ever come out of his mouth ever again.
05:20 - Savor this moment right here.
05:22 - It's like a solar eclipse or something.
05:24 - Huh.
05:24 - What is it?
05:29 - Nothing.
05:30 - Well, it's obviously something, because you said, "Huh."
05:32 - Forget it.
05:33 - Very well.
05:34 - I will say though, I mean, you make one heck of a walker.
05:38 Congratulations. - Thank you.
05:39 I appreciate it.
05:40 - You truly were so magical from start to finish.
05:43 And to have your name now in the category
05:45 with Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp,
05:47 what does that mean to you?
05:48 - It's crazy, I grew up on that Gene Wilder film.
05:50 I'm hugely admiring of the Tim Burton, Johnny version.
05:53 This is different, this is the origin of Wonka.
05:55 It's not Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
05:56 People are suspicious of any new telling
05:58 of beloved characters.
06:00 But I think Paul Kang, our director, pulled this one off.
06:02 And I'll let people judge for themselves.
