Aldo Bassi & Antonio Torta's Fatal Crash @ Mille Miglia 1950 (Aftermath)

The 1950 edition of the Mille Miglia was overshadowed by a number of accidents which resulted in the deaths of two competitors, and several other persons injured. On race day the course was treacherous because of the rains preceding the start, and the first accidents occurred just on the opening stages.

Less than 20 kilometers after the start in Viale Rebuffone, Brescia, Aldo Bassi lost control of the Ferrari 166MM Barchetta Touring #705 that he shared with Aldo Berardi, at 07h05 on Sunday, 23 April 1950. The car ran off the road in the village of Ponte San Marco, near Lonato, province of Brescia, and crashed into a tree.

Severely injured, both the occupants were taken in critical condition to the Ospedale Rossini in Brescia, where Aldo Bassi was pronounced dead on arrival. Berardi eventually survived the accident. Another accident would happen on the same day.

Co-driver to Egidio Salvati in a Fiat, Antonio Torta aged 40 from Rome, Italy, lost his lifein consequence of an accident which occurred during the 1950 Mille Miglia, on Sunday, 23 April 1950.

In the early stages of the race, the car driven by Salvati went out of control and crashed. Both its occupants were injured, being taken to hospital in Desenzano, province of Brescia, Italy. Egidio Salvati was released after treatment for leg wounds. Three days later, his co-driver Antonio Torta passed away from head and spinal injuries and fractures of both legs. It happened at 14h30 on Wednesday, 26 April 1950.

Some sources indicate that the spelling of the unfortunate co-driver's surname could be Torda, but it is likely that the correct form is Torta.
