Marcel Mazzoni died at La Plata hospital, ten days after being burned during a race at Tres Arroyos, province of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The accident occurred during the "TC del 40" final, which was part of the program of a racing meeting organized by the Moto Club Tres Arroyos at the "Autódromo Segundo Taraborelli" in Tres Arroyos, on Sunday, 20 April 2014. It was the second round of the Campeonato Zonal Bonaerense de TC del 40 (Province of Buenos Aires TC 1940 Zonal Championship), Mazzoni had finished 4th in the first heat and subsequently 6th in the second.
After starting the final race from the third row, the clutch disc of Marcelo Mazzoni's car suddenly disintegrated. He left the track, parking his burning Chevrolet #20 in the green on the right side. Some of the hot clutch fragments hit the fuel tank that ruptured, leading to a rapid fire into the car's cabin. In a few moments more, flames engulfed the car, with the driver still trapped in the cockpit.
While the race being immediately red-flagged, marshals with insufficient equipments were unable to put out the fierce fire. Finally firefighters intervened and the fire was extinguished several minutes later. Marcelo Mazzoni was rushed to the Pirovano Hospital in Tres Arroyos but later he was transferred by air ambulance to the Unidad del Quemado at the Hospital San Martín in La Plata, province of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Despite the best possible medical care, Marcelo Mazzoni passed away ten days later due to complications arising from his burns, on Wednesday, 30 April 2014.
A native of Tandil, province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Marcelo Mazzoni was 34-year-old. In 2011 he was involved in another huge accident after colliding with fellow citizen Mariano Romeo, while practicing at San Cayetano.
