00:00 And our singer songwriter, Nicole Asensio is dropping a new song with none other than Jeffrey Hidalgo. Now to tell us more about "Sana Masaya Ka"
00:09 Join us live, our Nicole Asensio and her multi-talented producer, all in one, Dave Dandan. Good morning to you both.
00:18 Good morning, it's such a pleasure and an honor to be back here.
00:22 It's wonderful to have you guys and of course Christmas is upon us as you can see and you are dropping your new Christmas song.
00:31 Is this your first ever Tagalog Christmas song?
00:34 Yes, this is my first Tagalog Christmas song. I always found it challenging to write in Tagalog and I always found it challenging to write Christmas songs so why not?
00:42 What is the most difficult thing about writing a Christmas song? I understand it is quite challenging.
00:48 I think it has to evoke the vibe of Christmas. When you hear it, let's say you don't know the lyrics, the moment you hear it, it has to feel like Christmas.
00:58 I think that's something that has a very distinct sound that I can't put a name to. There's no technical term for it.
01:06 So this single that's coming out December 1, "Sanay Masaya Ka"
01:11 What is the vibe? I mean of course it's a Christmas song but is it a happy, is it a sad, is it like a hugot?
01:20 It's bittersweet like batirol. Like Christmas batirol.
01:26 Well, I realized that sometimes the holiday season isn't sweet for everyone. It's bittersweet for some people.
01:33 There are people who are apart from the ones they love. There are people who are going through a separation or a loss or something difficult.
01:40 So I think that's what this song is about because the time we have on earth with our loved ones, whether it's a parent or a lover, is limited.
01:50 And when we don't have that time anymore, I think the true markings of really loving someone is wishing them well no matter how it ends up.
01:58 Yes, I read somewhere there's something to do with the one that got away.
02:01 Yes, that's Jeffrey's take on it. Hi Jeffrey, we miss you!
02:05 The one that got away. What was your writing process? I mean you have worked with Nicole Gabe for over nine years.
02:13 We've known each other.
02:16 You've known each other but you've worked with each other for how long?
02:21 Like one or two years.
02:23 Only a couple years since your Tagalog song "Nabawal".
02:26 Yeah, that was the first one.
02:28 So that sealed the deal. And since then you guys have been inseparable.
02:31 So what's your process like? I heard that you guys are very impromptu type.
02:37 Yes, like this.
02:38 You just kind of get together and just jam.
02:40 Yeah, I just have a guitar and I just make chords and she rides over it.
02:46 I think that's how we got along because we're both jammy musicians.
02:50 But for this Christmas song, was it intentional? Was it something that you really, like, "Okay, Gabe, we gotta put out a Christmas song."
02:57 Was it like that or was it just like that?
03:01 It wasn't a duet initially.
03:03 Yes.
03:04 But then we thought of a duet and I was like, "Pwede pwede si Jeffrey."
03:08 Immediately, he was like, "Jeffrey Hidalgo." And I was like, "Yes!"
03:12 For some reason, Jeffrey was mentioning that it wasn't really a collab that you would think of.
03:19 But for some reason, he said that once he heard the song, it just kind of blended.
03:24 It just made sense that both of you were doing this song together.
03:27 Yes, I mean, we were working together in a play and I've always been a fan of Jeffrey's voice.
03:32 He has a very unique tone. It's smoky. Smoky mountains?
03:36 Smoky and smoky mountains.
03:38 It's literally a smoky tone.
03:39 And so when we were writing the song, I said, "You know what? I've never done a duet for Christmas. I've always wanted to do it.
03:46 I don't know who to sing with. Who do you think?" And he didn't even miss a beat. He was like, "Jeffrey Hidalgo."
03:51 So what was it about Jeffrey that you said was right off the bat?
03:55 Was there no long list? Was it just Jeffrey on your list?
03:58 I don't know. Because Jeffrey is a balladeer, right?
04:03 But he also has that nice, smoky kind of R&B tone, which I like.
04:09 So I didn't want the sound to be too balladee.
04:13 And then I was like, "Oh, Jeff would be perfect." And he's fast.
04:16 Yes.
04:17 Quick.
04:18 And he's sweet. And he's awesome to work with.
04:21 Oh, yeah.
04:22 And you've worked with him in the past. I mean, this would be your first time.
04:24 Fun in the studio.
04:25 He said it was like the best collab ever. You know, let's do it again.
04:31 Did he work?
04:33 Yes. But do you have a favorite line? Or maybe you can give an example because I've been dying to hear it.
04:40 But it's not out yet. Till December 1. So can you give us a snippet?
04:45 Good morning, everyone.
04:46 Good morning.
04:47 Game?
04:49 Okay.

06:27 [Music]
06:30 Oh, wow. I can feel it already. I can definitely feel it. It has a jazzy, jazzy type.
06:37 Yes. Yes. So I was planning a whole Christmas EP, actually, which was done with a big band.
06:44 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:45 Jazz big band. But I think I'm going to save that for next year.
06:49 Next year.
06:50 Because Jeffrey's time was just so precious. We had to snap it up. And Sabiko, let's release this one.
06:55 But it is along the same vein sonically because we were already exploring that sound, that jazz sound.
07:03 There are definitely jazz opium influences there.
07:06 Well, moving forward, is that what we can expect more from you?
07:09 I mean, okay, so, you know, Nicole here does everything, you know, from rock, she does classical, she does theater.
07:17 You know, I don't know what.
07:19 I cannot dance.
07:20 You cannot dance, okay. We found something that she can't do, but she can act, she can do pretty much everything.
07:26 Moving forward, I mean, what can we expect from you?
07:30 So I think the last few years, we definitely revisited our influences, jazz being definitely very apparent, working with a big band.
07:39 There are still hints of that in our future music that we're about to release.
07:44 But I would say it's more modern, bagong luman, bagong bago, a little bit of a more of a soul, funk vibe to it.
07:54 So yeah, we're working on songs. There are 28 of them.
07:58 Do you agree? Gabe is looking like, you know.
08:01 Yeah, that's correct.
08:05 You would know if I'm saying the right thing.
08:08 It's hard to say the genre.
08:11 That's always our problem. Like when we have to send it out for release and it's like, what genre is it?
08:16 I never know what to say, but I think that's why we're releasing.
08:21 Yeah, what is pop? That's a good topic to discuss. What is pop these days?
08:26 But yeah, I guess that's why we're releasing it in little groups.
08:29 I call them houses, like little houses of singles so that we can also explore different influences, different sounds.
08:36 And yeah, that will be starting off early of next year. One of the many EPs we will be releasing.
08:43 Okay, but one thing that we are going to immediately look forward to would be December 1.
08:48 So do invite your fans, audiences to come and get jazzy and cozy.
08:52 Miss the one that got away.
08:55 Totga. As Jeffrey says.
08:58 Well, thank you, first of all, for having us.
09:01 Hello to everyone who's up early.
09:05 And yes, please stream the single on December 1 on all listening platforms.
09:09 Thank you so much to Warner Music Philippines for making this possible.
09:13 And thank you to the entire team that we worked with to record this song to Waxified, who mastered it.
09:21 And Dolby Atmos also. So if that's your thing, it will be available in spatial audio.
09:26 And yes, if you want to know more, you can check it out on social media at Nicola Sancho on Instagram.
09:33 And we will definitely be releasing more music in the months to come.
09:37 So please stay tuned. Thank you so much.
09:39 Thank you. Thank you both of you for being. I'm waking up early.
09:42 I know it's hard for you, Gabe, to wake up early, but we do appreciate you taking the time to visit us here on set.
09:49 Thanks. Thanks to both of you.
09:51 Thank you. It's always a pleasure to see your beautiful face in the morning.
09:55 Thank you. And hi to your mom. Hi to Iwi.
09:57 Hi, mama. Hi, Tita. Hi, mom.
