Former policeman Sirul Azhar Umar, who was sentenced to death for the 2006 murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu, has not applied for a review of his death sentence, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The Home Minister told reporters when met at the sidelines of the PKR national congress in Putrajaya on Sunday (Nov 26) that only convicted killer Azilah Hadri had applied for a review of his death sentence.

00:00 Malaysia, should we start the process of extraditing Syirul Azhar?
00:09 I have made a statement before this.
00:13 Syirul's seat is now free by the Australian court.
00:17 First, I refer to the agreement between Australia and Malaysia.
00:25 Both the agreements, the extradition and MLA,
00:30 put one very clear condition,
00:34 beside the other conditions,
00:36 but the most clear condition for us to fulfill is the aspect of dual criminality.
00:42 And in this case, the aspect is not fulfilled
00:46 because Australia does not recognize the death penalty compared to us.
00:52 On the other hand, we have also gone through two changes.
00:56 The death penalty is mandatory and also related to the 30-year life sentence.
01:04 So, in this case, Syirul is free.
01:07 Who should start the process for extraditing?
01:13 We know that there are more than 1,060 extradited.
01:18 And that involves Syirul and Azilah.
01:22 Compared to Syirul in Australia,
01:25 Azilah lives in Singapore.
01:29 Azilah is one of the first 900 people who asked for extradition.
01:34 Related to the sentence.
01:37 The sentence is still there.
01:39 The sentence they asked for by the Syirul's Executive Court.
01:42 In Syirul's case, if he wants to use this space,
01:49 the extradition must be done by his lawyer.
01:54 So, that's the process.
01:56 And until that happens,
01:58 the government assumes that
02:01 the extradition or the ban of Dato' Najib is a ban
02:07 that the government will follow,
02:10 because the decision is up to Syirul.
02:14 So, Syirul still hasn't made a request for extradition?
02:19 We don't have any information yet.
02:21 I can only confirm that it's Azilah.
02:23 While Syirul has just been released this past week.
02:28 We haven't received any response yet.
02:31 The judge has already made a request for a ban.
02:36 Dato' Siri, Syirul said he received 1 million from Australia to shut his mouth.
02:41 What do you think about that?
02:43 I also followed Al-Jazeera's coverage
02:46 where Syirul said something like that.
02:49 The same thing was said by the Chief of Police of the country.
02:54 Only Syirul knows about that.
02:59 But based on the evidence,
03:03 that statement was not made public
03:07 during the daily conversation.
03:09 So, it remains as a statement from Syirul.
03:14 And only he can answer
03:17 why he was released now
03:20 or what his real intention is.
03:23 I don't want to comment on that.
03:25 Clearly, like the media,
03:29 I also follow it as a current statement.
03:32 That's all for now from Syirul.
03:35 Thank you for watching.
