LSU CB Javien Toviano: Year 1 in Baton Rouge
Transcript
00:00 >> Well, go ahead, how have things gone for you and progressed for you?
00:06 We know you were playing safety, obviously, and
00:08 then all of a sudden you had to get in that cornerback and everything.
00:12 How things been going the way you wanted them to or?
00:15 >> Absolutely, I mean, it's been a bit of a transition, of course, but
00:19 I mean, I pride myself on being versatile and just getting in where I fit in.
00:23 Whether that's safety, that's corner, whatever the team needs,
00:26 really just being the guy that can play that position.
00:29 >> When did you actually start getting to work on the outside of that corner?
00:33 When did you have to start adjusting to that?
00:37 >> I've been a guy that's just been bouncing around since the springtime.
00:41 So I started off that corner and worked into nickel safety, but
00:45 it wasn't until probably about two, three weeks ago, we kinda were in a position of
00:50 need, so just being a guy that can play that position, probably about that time.
00:55 >> Just before the Alabama game?
00:56 >> I would say kinda quite about that time.
00:58 >> Did you volunteer or did they ask you to do it?
01:01 >> I mean, I think it was both ways.
01:03 I mean, just wanting to be able to be there for the team and help them win.
01:09 So wherever that is.
01:12 >> Is it difficult kinda being a Swiss Army knife and
01:13 just throwing all over the defensive backfield?
01:15 >> I mean, that's football at the end of the day.
01:17 I mean, backpedaling, you're opening up and you're trying to defend the ball.
01:20 So that's where my mindset is about it.
01:24 >> Of the three, do you have a favorite of the three positions, safety, nickel,
01:28 or corner?
01:29 >> I like to play football, so I mean, wherever that is.
01:35 >> You, Jeremiah, and Ashton have kinda been thrown in the fire,
01:38 like I was saying before.
01:39 How have you guys kinda bonded both on and off the field and
01:41 just kinda grown closer over the last couple of weeks?
01:44 >> Just trusting what we've been taught.
01:46 I mean, obviously we're younger guys and I mean, it's a process to get on the field.
01:51 But just being able to get in and get in an extra film,
01:55 making sure that you're paying attention to those details in the playbook and
01:59 just prying yourself.
02:00 That's really it, just being a fighting freshman.
02:03 I mean, competing, that's what it's really all about, just compete.
02:06 >> So how it's really just still backpedaling, flipping your hips, but
02:09 is there any difference that has gone into playing outside corner as opposed to
02:12 the nickel?
02:13 >> Absolutely, just the techniques.
02:15 I mean, that's probably the biggest part.
02:17 I mean, you're gonna scooch in a slot and
02:19 you're gonna be able to just defend the man backpedaling over on the outside.
02:22 It's just different variants of techniques I would just say.
