I shouldn't judge, but Lexus was known for being a brand primarily for older people. But, that's all changing now and I think the brand is starting to feel a little more hip. So, does the 2022 Lexus RX fall into that category? Paul Maric gets behind the wheel to find out!

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:00 When you think of SUVs and seven-seat SUVs,
00:04 you don't always think of that, which is the Lexus RX.
00:07 And I don't know why.
00:08 Everyone always thinks about its competitors,
00:10 which are the BMW X5, the Mercedes-Benz GLE,
00:13 and the Audi Q7.
00:15 But I thought we'd give this one a test today.
00:17 This is the top specification non-hybrid.
00:20 It's called the RX 350L.
00:22 The L means that it's the longer version with seven seats.
00:25 This is priced from a little over $100,000,
00:28 but the entire range, if that's a little too expensive,
00:30 kicks off at a little over 70 grand.
00:33 Today, we're gonna do a detailed review of this car.
00:35 If you wanna skip ahead to other parts of the review,
00:37 you've got time codes up on the screen,
00:39 or if you're on YouTube,
00:41 scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:43 And if you haven't done so already,
00:44 subscribe, bell icon,
00:46 and you will know every single time we publish a review
00:49 of something you don't see all that often.
00:52 Let's talk about exterior.
00:54 So you have nine colors to pick from.
00:56 All but black is a ridiculous, almost $2,000 extra.
01:01 I mean, I don't really understand
01:03 how this paint is any different
01:04 to the paint they use on a Toyota, which is much cheaper.
01:07 But anyway, that is the price of picking a color
01:10 that isn't black.
01:11 Let's talk about the design.
01:13 Look, there is a lot going on here,
01:14 and I think Lexus was the OG of the big grill.
01:17 I think BMW has now well and truly taken over that title.
01:21 But have a look at this.
01:22 It is a monster grill.
01:23 And it's interesting because this doesn't look
01:25 as ghastly as it does on the BMW cars.
01:29 So I don't know what it is about this,
01:30 but it just looks kind of okay.
01:32 It's got the same design on the front in there
01:34 as the LC that we reviewed a while back.
01:36 So it's got that sort of 3D cutout where it comes down
01:39 and then tucks back in on itself.
01:41 And you've got this sort of waterfall grill
01:43 down the front there with a big Lexus logo.
01:45 Chrome highlights around the front there as well.
01:48 Fog lights down the bottom.
01:49 You have a set of full LED headlights.
01:51 These have an adaptive beam as well
01:53 with an LED daytime running light.
01:55 Around the side here, you have a set of 20 inch alloy wheels.
01:59 Nice design as well.
02:00 It's quite classy and very Lexus if that's a thing.
02:03 So it looks very premium and high end.
02:05 And I don't know, it just makes you feel good
02:07 about spending a hundred grand on your SUV.
02:09 You've got these wheel arch protectors just here.
02:12 Up on the top, you have a little bit more
02:14 of that chrome garnish with an indicator built in.
02:16 Camera on the side there for the 360 camera.
02:18 Roof rails with a sunroof there.
02:20 Privacy glass.
02:21 And come around to the back,
02:23 you can see from that side profile
02:24 where it is a little bit longer
02:26 and that's to accommodate the seven seats in the back.
02:29 You've got the L designation
02:30 for this being the long wheelbase.
02:32 LED taillights in the back there.
02:34 They look really cool.
02:35 At nighttime, they light up beautifully.
02:37 So you've got that sort of tiered setup.
02:39 A little bit more chrome down the bottom there as well.
02:41 Let me know what you reckon about the design.
02:43 This car's been out for a little while now
02:44 and there is a new one coming,
02:45 but I don't know, I think it still looks good.
02:47 It looks completely different
02:48 to everything else out on the road.
02:50 And I think that's definitely a good thing.
02:51 So we're inside the RX.
02:53 Let's start off with the key.
02:55 Here it is.
02:55 So you have lock, unlock, boot, panic.
02:59 Then on the back, you have the Lexus logo.
03:01 Little bit of metallic stuff on the side there.
03:04 It's a proximity sensing key.
03:05 So you can just leave that in your pocket.
03:07 And then once you're inside,
03:07 you have a push button start just here.
03:10 So being a Lexus,
03:11 this kind of is a bit traditional in a sense.
03:14 So you've got the old analog clock here.
03:16 And I think this is a nice implementation.
03:17 This looks really classy and high end.
03:20 It even has a CD player.
03:21 I haven't seen these around for ages.
03:24 It also has like pinstripes in the wood grain.
03:26 So yeah, it's very much Lexus, this interior.
03:29 If you have a look at some of the other SUVs
03:31 that are about that $100,000 mark,
03:33 they don't feel anywhere near as luxurious as this does.
03:37 So I think that's one of the selling points
03:38 of the Lexus brand.
03:39 You are getting a luxury vehicle for the price of,
03:42 you know, a mid range SUV from the competitors.
03:45 So big plus there.
03:47 In terms of the materials,
03:47 so soft touch pretty much everywhere.
03:49 You've got this stitching along the top there.
03:51 All of this stuff is soft to the touch as well.
03:54 Nice place to rest your knee on too.
03:56 Touch points, this is reasonably soft.
03:58 And then door panels are reasonably soft as well.
04:01 How soft are they?
04:02 Well, we have our durometer.
04:03 We've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
04:06 If you want to see how this car compares to others
04:08 that we've tested before,
04:09 have a look at the link in the description.
04:11 Build quality, righto.
04:13 Oh, it's a little bit loose in the center there.
04:16 I was kind of expecting all of that to be nice and solid.
04:18 So a little bit disappointing.
04:20 What about our door test?
04:21 We can have a listen to the door.
04:23 Yeah, it sounds nice and solid.
04:27 Now let's talk infotainment.
04:29 So this looks impressive,
04:31 but unfortunately it's not really that good
04:33 of an infotainment system.
04:35 It's a 12.3 inch screen.
04:37 It's a touch screen,
04:38 but it's also driven by this pad down here.
04:40 And I think this pad's probably my biggest issue with it.
04:43 It's just really hard to use while you're driving.
04:45 See, it's like a mouse and then it stickies
04:48 to all of these things as you float across them.
04:51 And it's just really tricky to do
04:53 while you're trying to concentrate on the road.
04:55 In fact, let me know if you're a Lexus owner,
04:57 do you get used to this infotainment system
04:59 or is it just a bugbear that you kind of just deal with
05:02 as part of ownership?
05:03 Really just keen for your feedback on that.
05:05 It could just be me that doesn't like it,
05:06 but I'm just not really a huge fan of it.
05:08 So you get inbuilt satellite navigation.
05:10 And then in addition to that,
05:12 you have AM, FM and DAB plus digital radio.
05:16 And that's all sent through a 15 speaker
05:19 Mark Levinson sound system.
05:21 Sound system is excellent.
05:22 The Mark Levinson stuff in Lexus vehicles
05:24 is normally pretty on point.
05:26 You also have the ability to connect your smartphone
05:28 through smartphone mirroring.
05:30 Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported.
05:32 Both are wired, so you can't do a wireless setup,
05:34 but it is a full screen integration, which is great.
05:37 Again, driven by this touch pad,
05:39 or you can use your finger to operate the screen as well.
05:43 Now, in terms of Android Auto, it has that as well.
05:45 Unfortunately, I can't show you it
05:47 because our phone is shagged and it's not working.
05:49 Head of the driver is another little display.
05:52 This is for your trip computer safety systems.
05:54 You can tell that this car's starting to feel a little dated.
05:57 There is a brand new one coming
05:58 because this has been around in Toyotas for ages now,
06:01 and there are newer versions of this screen.
06:04 So this all just feels a little bit old
06:06 and you can tell we're at the end of the platform
06:09 for this car.
06:09 Okay, moving on to safety technology.
06:12 You have autonomous emergency braking
06:13 with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
06:16 You have blind spot monitoring built into the wing mirror,
06:18 radar cruise control, lane departure warning,
06:20 and a lane keeping assistant, rear cross traffic alert,
06:23 traffic sign recognition, and a head up display.
06:27 And then in terms of parking,
06:28 you have front and rear parking sensors and a 360 camera.
06:31 I'll show you what that looks like.
06:32 Now, you've got a couple of things you can do.
06:33 You can hit the view button here,
06:35 and that gives you this cool 3D view of the car.
06:38 You can then select this around view as well.
06:41 Or when you put it into reverse,
06:43 you see the rest of that reversing feature.
06:46 Not the world's sharpest camera.
06:48 In fact, it's really low quality.
06:50 Have a look at that.
06:50 You can barely make out the car behind us.
06:52 This does move with the steering wheel though,
06:54 and you can then select different views,
06:56 but it'd be nice to see a much higher quality camera there.
06:59 Now, what about practicality?
07:00 And we'll start with your connectivity options.
07:02 So you've got two USB-A ports
07:04 with 2.1 amps of charging up the front here.
07:07 You've got a 12-volt outlet.
07:09 Wireless phone charging,
07:11 you have another two USB sockets here,
07:13 plus a 12-volt outlet, plus an auxiliary socket as well.
07:16 So plenty of connectivity options.
07:18 Storing your phone is interesting.
07:20 So you can put it on the wireless charging pad just there,
07:22 or there's like this rubber socket down the front,
07:25 and it sort of holds your phone into place
07:27 while you're driving, so it's not gonna go anywhere.
07:28 Or you can pop your phone down the front there as well.
07:30 So plenty of storage options.
07:32 Coffee cup fits into there without any problems.
07:35 Easy to get out as well.
07:36 Bottle storage, no dramas in there.
07:39 You've got teeth as well.
07:40 This secondary slot is really cool as well,
07:42 because if you have a bigger bottle,
07:44 you can push that all the way down,
07:46 and then you press a button there
07:47 to bring it back up to its position.
07:49 You have bottle storage inside the doors as well,
07:51 as part of that pocket.
07:53 You can also fit the big bottle,
07:54 because there are adjustable pockets inside the door there.
07:57 So the big bottle easily fits in there as well,
07:59 which is cool.
08:00 Other storage, you have this center console.
08:02 It's nice and deep, plenty of room in there.
08:04 You have a glove box over here.
08:07 It's kind of all eaten away by the manual.
08:09 There's not really much more room in there.
08:10 And this little slot down here,
08:12 plus finally a sunglasses holder up the top.
08:15 What about comfort?
08:16 Well, you have three zones of automatic climate control,
08:18 two up the front here.
08:19 You also have heated and cooled seats for the front row.
08:23 I love with these seats as well,
08:25 in terms of comfort,
08:26 perforations for the sort of air to come through.
08:29 They hug you in nicely,
08:31 and they're really comfy to sit in as well.
08:33 So big bonus there.
08:34 There's 10-way power adjustment
08:36 for both the driver and front passenger with memory.
08:39 Steering wheel is electrically adjustable.
08:40 So in, out, up, down.
08:42 And then in terms of our reach test, that's all great.
08:46 As long as you're not using this as a touchscreen,
08:48 everything here is easy to reach.
08:50 Second row.
08:52 Look at this, what a place to be.
08:54 So in terms of room, let's start with that first.
08:56 Got loads of knee room.
08:57 Toe room isn't great.
08:59 Like it's good, but because the front seat is so far down,
09:03 my toes are just kind of wedged,
09:04 and I can't really sort of get them in there,
09:06 but headroom is okay.
09:08 There's like a little divot in the roof here
09:09 that gives you a little bit more space there.
09:12 I love the design back here.
09:13 So similar to the front,
09:14 it follows on with that theme of perforated seats.
09:17 And this color just works well with the interior.
09:20 And you also get those deep pile carpets down here as well.
09:23 It's a bit like a Rolls Royce or something.
09:25 Air vents.
09:26 You have mat pockets over here.
09:29 Center armrest is interesting,
09:30 'cause this is where you'll find your heated seats.
09:32 So you use these buttons to switch them on.
09:35 Behind here, you've got two USB-A ports,
09:37 plus a little storage nook.
09:38 And then you have a bottle holder there.
09:41 Two cup holders.
09:42 Pop that out of the way.
09:43 You can also put your bottle inside the door as well.
09:47 The doors themselves have these shades,
09:49 so you can lift that up,
09:50 give yourself a little bit of privacy from the outside,
09:54 as that gets stuck on the way down.
09:56 Look, it is just a really nice place to be seated.
09:58 And the big bonus of this three-row SUV
10:01 is your second row can slide forwards and backwards
10:04 to give third-row occupants a bit more accommodation.
10:06 Now, speaking of third row,
10:07 let's climb in there and see just how much space there is.
10:10 I will caveat this firstly, though,
10:13 by saying this is designed just for kids.
10:15 So me getting in there,
10:17 it's not really gonna prove anything,
10:18 but I just wanna give you a representation
10:19 of what it looks like with an adult in there,
10:21 so you can get that idea in your head.
10:23 So to access the third row,
10:24 you give this lever a pull.
10:25 That pushes that all the way forward.
10:28 The third row's electric,
10:29 so you've got buttons down here
10:30 or buttons in the boot as well.
10:32 It pops both of those up.
10:33 Now, I will climb in.
10:36 Kind of gotta squeeze yourself around there.
10:38 Now, I will caveat this by saying as well
10:40 that this seat is all the way back.
10:42 If I had my seat in that position,
10:45 I wouldn't have enough knee room here,
10:46 but I'll bring this row back
10:48 so you can see how much room there is.
10:50 Igor, I don't know,
10:51 if you wanna get a shot of how much knee room
10:52 there is down there.
10:54 In this position, I have enough knee room here.
10:57 Toe room is reasonable.
10:58 Headroom is pretty much non-existent.
11:00 It's sort of in the roof just there.
11:03 Off to the side, you have controls here
11:05 for the third zone of climate controls.
11:07 You also have air vents on both sides as well
11:09 to keep everything nice and cool.
11:12 And cup holders just here in the center.
11:15 You've got top tether points on these three seats
11:17 plus the seat that I'm in as well.
11:19 So look, it is a kid-only space,
11:22 but I think it is a nice space for kids.
11:24 Let's have a look behind the third row
11:25 plus a cool feature that Lexus has implemented
11:28 with these electric seats.
11:29 As is often the case with these three-row SUVs,
11:33 power tailgate, there's not a great deal of room
11:36 behind your third row.
11:39 In this position right here,
11:40 you have storage beneath the cargo floor.
11:43 Not a great deal of it,
11:43 but enough to put your odds and ends.
11:46 You have a little over 200 liters of cargo space here,
11:48 which is actually pretty impressive.
11:50 Let's see if it fits our big suitcase.
11:53 So this fits in in theory,
11:54 but when you try and close that door,
11:56 it nudges on this and it won't actually shut properly.
11:59 So if you went down to a carry-on size suitcase,
12:02 it would fit here behind the third row, but this doesn't.
12:05 Let me show you a trick though,
12:06 and this will allow that suitcase to fit in.
12:09 Lexus has been clever.
12:11 So I mentioned earlier that you can drop these seats
12:13 using buttons on the side here,
12:16 but if you do wanna vary the amount of room that you have,
12:18 you can actually set the seat into an alternate setting.
12:22 And I'll show you what I mean.
12:23 I'm gonna make the right-hand side of that seat
12:26 stay a little further in when it opens.
12:28 So you push and hold this,
12:30 and then we'll bring them back up again.
12:33 You'll see what I mean.
12:35 This gives the third row passenger less leg room,
12:38 but it does mean that we do have more room
12:40 here in the third row.
12:41 Wait for that to come up.
12:44 It is very slow and laborious, this process.
12:47 There it is there.
12:49 So that means you get a little bit of extra space.
12:50 And if you do that to both of those seats,
12:52 you actually fit that middle-sized suitcase in
12:54 without any dramas at all.
12:56 So I haven't seen that before on the market,
12:57 and I think it is a very clever feature.
12:59 Let's get rid of these two,
13:00 and I'll show you how much room there is for our bags
13:03 when the third row is folded into the floor.
13:06 Once that does disappear,
13:07 you have a little over 400 litres of cargo space available.
13:10 Pop our bags in.
13:12 One, two.
13:15 Plenty of room in there.
13:16 And if you do wanna expand the space even further
13:18 to a little over 1600 litres,
13:20 we drop the second row.
13:21 That is done from the side here.
13:25 And there is your big van-like cabinet of space.
13:29 We've just hit the road in the RX 350L.
13:33 Let's run through the engine.
13:34 So there are two variants of the RX you can get.
13:36 You can get the naturally aspirated V6,
13:39 which is what this is, or the hybrid.
13:41 And the naturally aspirated V6
13:43 is gonna feel pretty familiar
13:44 because this V6 has been around in Toyotas
13:46 for donkey's years.
13:47 And that's not saying it's a bad thing,
13:48 but just something to take note of.
13:50 It's a three and a half litre naturally aspirated V6
13:53 that makes 221 kilowatts of power
13:56 and 370 newton metres of torque.
13:58 And it's all mated to an eight speed automatic transmission.
14:02 So no dual clutches, just a standard torque converter.
14:04 And that's what works best with this engine.
14:07 It is such a, I hate using this term,
14:09 but just a buttery smooth engine.
14:11 Everything is just so beautifully delivered
14:14 and it's got a bit of a peaky end to it as well.
14:16 So you really feel it at the top end
14:17 and this gearbox works an absolute treat with it.
14:20 What's it like behind the wheel?
14:21 Well, the gearbox is very smooth.
14:23 It's always just transitioning through gears
14:26 without any sort of realisation at all.
14:28 And then when you do wanna punch it,
14:30 it sort of gets up and goes really beautifully.
14:33 So you get the responsiveness when you need it.
14:35 And then as the revs pick up,
14:37 you really feel it at the top end as well.
14:39 So you never feel lacking in this.
14:41 It's always there and ready to deliver.
14:42 Lexus claims a zero to 100 time of eight seconds.
14:46 We've put it up against our stopwatch
14:47 and this is how it went.
14:50 (car engine roaring)
14:53 Now you can get front wheel drive versions of this car,
15:03 but this is a all wheel drive
15:04 and that means it's an on demand type system.
15:07 So it's kind of always sending a bit of torque to the rear,
15:09 but when you do have traction loss at the front,
15:12 that's when it will fully activate the rear.
15:14 I'll show you what I mean.
15:15 I'm gonna pull over just on the verge here
15:16 and just throw one tyre off.
15:18 And then I'll just hit the throttle
15:20 and we have a little display here
15:21 that tells us exactly what's going on
15:23 in terms of our torque delivery.
15:25 You'll be able to see it in action.
15:27 Here we go.
15:27 You can see immediately there, it's pulsed to the rear
15:31 so that we actually get out of there
15:33 without the front wheels just spinning.
15:34 So pretty handy feature to have.
15:36 And you also have a button down here
15:38 that allows you to lock the center differential.
15:41 I don't know if it actually has a center differential,
15:43 but it's apportioning 50% of torque to the front and rear.
15:45 It'll be some kind of a clutch mechanism
15:47 that just ensures that you're getting
15:49 that equal distribution as you drive.
15:51 Lexus claims fuel economy of 10.2 litres per 100 Ks.
15:55 Let's have a look at how we're doing.
15:57 We're currently sitting on 12.4.
15:59 So look, near enough to that figure.
16:02 And it's about what I'd expect for a petrol V6
16:05 in a big SUV like this.
16:07 Now in terms of your drive modes,
16:08 so you've got a selector here
16:09 that takes you through the thousand drive modes it has.
16:11 So you've got Eco, Normal, Custom, Sport, Sport Plus.
16:14 So I'm gonna flick it over to Sport Plus.
16:16 I'll just pop it through a couple of these corners.
16:19 Look, it has a bit of body roll.
16:21 You can really feel the body moving over
16:24 as you tip it into the corner,
16:25 especially on these higher speed corners.
16:27 You can feel it kind of just settling into itself.
16:30 And you know the interesting thing as well,
16:31 this has adaptive dampers.
16:32 So in this sport setting,
16:33 it's really trying to give you a firmer ride,
16:36 but it's Lexus firm.
16:37 So it's not back-braking,
16:39 it's just firm enough for you to feel
16:41 that something has changed,
16:42 but not over the top where you're kind of
16:45 having to book in with your chiropractor.
16:47 And then as the speed picks up,
16:48 it actually feels nice and stable.
16:50 There's no surprises there.
16:51 And I'm really impressed with how that goes.
16:54 Now in terms of your normal ride though,
16:56 if I pop this back into comfort,
16:58 ride itself is great.
17:00 These are big wheels
17:01 and big wheels should mean a harsher ride,
17:04 but they've dialed in the perfect amount of damping here
17:06 to give you that luxury feel,
17:08 but still give you the body control.
17:10 And body control is one of those things that,
17:13 look, you're probably not going to ever experience it,
17:14 but if you do find yourself driving energetically,
17:16 you need to have body control as you hit corners mid bump
17:19 and the car starts moving around.
17:21 And this section here,
17:22 we've used this in a few of our videos,
17:24 it's undulations on a country road,
17:26 and I'll dial up to the maximum speed here in Australia.
17:29 You can see the body remains really nice and composed.
17:32 In a car without body control,
17:33 it's just almost about to leave the ground.
17:35 In fact, some cars do at 130,
17:38 leave the ground there and then bottom out again.
17:40 So this is just a really nice and refined package,
17:43 and they've given you just that little bit of sportiness,
17:45 but it's not over the top.
17:47 Now, what about the quietness inside the cabin
17:49 as the rain sort of pitter-patters down?
17:51 Lexus is a brand that you think of
17:53 when you think of quietness and luxury,
17:56 and you get that feeling behind the wheel here.
17:58 The cabin is nice and quiet, it's really subdued.
18:01 Yes, when the speed picks up on course chip roads,
18:03 you will notice that you get a bit of that
18:05 coming into the cabin,
18:06 but for the most part,
18:07 it's actually a pretty nice place to be seated.
18:10 And if you are doing long distance drives,
18:11 it is very quiet and relaxing, this environment.
18:14 What about visibility?
18:15 So the seating position's interesting.
18:16 You sit sort of low.
18:18 It's weird, it's sort of not like a typical SUV
18:20 where you're looking down from above.
18:22 You sit a little hunkered down,
18:23 and that's great in terms of driving
18:25 because you have full control over the car
18:28 and you feel like you're in charge
18:29 of everything that's going on.
18:30 Visibility down the front's okay,
18:31 but I can't see the edges of the bonnet there,
18:33 but you do have the front parking sensors,
18:35 which helps with that at low speed.
18:37 The wing mirrors are huge as well,
18:38 so plenty of visibility there.
18:40 There's a blind spot monitor built into those,
18:41 so that will light up as you get a car in the blind spot.
18:44 Out the back, it's also fine.
18:46 The envelope is pretty decent there,
18:48 so you can clearly see what's going on.
18:49 You probably won't be towing with this,
18:50 but if you do, you have a 1500 kilogram
18:53 braked towing capacity.
18:55 Ground clearance comes in at just under 200 millimeters.
18:57 So again, nothing too outrageous.
18:59 You're not gonna be doing any off-road driving,
19:00 but it is there if you need it.
19:02 And then turning circle is 11.8 meters, which is okay.
19:07 It's not too bad.
19:08 Steering is nice and light
19:09 as you go through that turning circle, though,
19:11 which is good news for low-speed parking maneuvers.
19:14 So the Lexus RX.
19:18 I genuinely thought I wasn't going to like it at all
19:20 because, you know, no offense to older people,
19:23 but I think Lexuses are sometimes for older people.
19:26 What I'm finding here, though,
19:27 is outside of the infotainment system,
19:29 there really is a lot to like about this.
19:31 It's good value for money for a seven-seater.
19:34 Yes, it's not really adult-friendly in the third row,
19:36 but if you do need a seven-seater
19:38 and you want something luxurious,
19:39 this really does tick all the boxes.
19:41 You don't have to spend megabucks on an X5 or a GLE.
19:44 And if you don't need the fuel efficiency,
19:45 that petrol V6 is still kind of fun to drive.
19:48 It's got a cool note to it as well.
19:50 So look, it is just a fun car overall,
19:52 let down by some of the tech.
19:54 If that's an issue, keep in mind that this is going
19:57 to be completely changed over in the next year or two,
19:59 and that means that you will probably get the tech
20:01 that we're now seeing rolled out
20:02 of the rest of Toyota's products,
20:04 and it'll be released at a level
20:05 that's probably higher than Toyota's products as well
20:07 to fit that Lexus niche.
20:09 So keep an eye on the space.
20:10 Let me know down in the comments,
20:12 have you bought one of these?
20:13 Are you an older person or are you a younger person?
20:15 Who is buying these things and what did you cross shop?
20:18 Because I always find it fascinating
20:19 to see what people rejected before they bought
20:22 one of the cars that we test.
