00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. If you do a Google search for "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", you know that saying,
00:04 I think a picture of that comes up because that is Toyota's motto with the Land Cruiser Prado.
00:10 They kind of just tweak it a little bit every now and then and it just stays being pretty much the same
00:16 big SUV it always has. It's dependable, reliable, goes on forever, all that kind of thing.
00:20 Now, this has been updated with a little bit more grunt and a few new features inside. This is the top specification
00:27 Prado Kakadu. Now, Kakadu may not make any sense to you if you're not from Australia.
00:32 It is a place in Australia and they've named it after that because I think this could drive there over any obstacle
00:37 that you throw at it. It's priced at just under
00:40 $90,000, so it is a bucket load of cash. It competes with things like the Ford Everest,
00:46 although it doesn't really have competitors in that segment because the Everest is ute-based, whereas the Fortuner is
00:53 the SUV version of the Hilux. So it kind of sits in its own little middle ground there and it is a whole lot more
00:58 expensive than the rest of those ute-based
01:00 SUVs. Today we're going to do a detailed review of the Prado Kakadu along with some very basic light off-roading.
01:05 If you do want to skip ahead to other parts of this review,
01:07 you can use the time codes up on the screen there, or if you're on YouTube, just scroll down and use the chapters below.
01:13 And if you haven't done so already, make sure you hit subscribe and press the bell icon
01:16 so you can find out every single time we drive a car named after a place in Australia.
01:21 Okay, let's talk colors. You've got 10 exterior colors to choose from, and all but black and white is an additional $600.
01:27 I really like this metallic blue. It looks fantastic. It's got like a pearlescent effect to it as well.
01:32 Okay, let's talk design.
01:35 That is a big old grille.
01:36 It looks like it's got teeth, like it's ready to just eat whatever creatures it finds in the outback.
01:40 Big Toyota logo there. You can see one of those 360 degree cameras hidden down the bottom there,
01:46 along with a little inlet there for the cooling system. Jump over here to the headlights.
01:51 LED headlights, and you get this little 3D element here,
01:54 which we've seen on the Hilux before. Headlight washers built in, and then down the bottom there we have fog lights as well.
02:00 I think overall, this is quite a classy design, especially on the Kakadu with these chrome highlights.
02:04 This gives it a bit of presence and it looks pretty nice. We'll jump around to the side.
02:08 You've got 18-inch alloy wheels along with this all-terrain tire.
02:12 All-terrain tires are going to be good if you're doing off-road driving.
02:15 This comes standard with them. Kind of balances between being capable off-road and also not being too noisy on the highway.
02:22 Up here, you've got indicators built into those wing mirrors. A meaty set of sidesteps.
02:26 Roof rails.
02:29 Privacy glass. And then come around to the rear. Look at this, no tire on the back.
02:33 Well, the tire now lives under here, or you can just have the tire on the back.
02:36 So they do a no-cost option for the flat back. It still means that this swings open,
02:41 but you do get this window that pops up like this. So,
02:44 it is a bit of an advantage. You wouldn't have that otherwise, and it means that it's not as
02:48 inconvenient when that door has to swing open. No LED taillights. It still has the traditional incandescent,
02:53 but you get your Kakadu badging there. A whole lot of chrome there that includes Land Cruiser and Prado, and then a
02:59 3,000 kilogram brake towing capacity. We are inside the Prado and before we talk about all this stuff,
03:07 let's have a look at the key. Here it is here. So you have lock,
03:11 unlock, boot, and on the other side you have a Land Cruiser.
03:15 This is a proximity sensing key.
03:17 So you just keep that in your pocket, grab the door handle, and then once you jump inside there is a push button start.
03:21 Righto, let's talk about styling. This is going to be the old man. Actually, that's not politically correct.
03:27 This is going to be the old man in me talking. I love this. I think this wood grain looks really cool.
03:32 It gives it this really classy edge, and this interior is just decked out in this beige color.
03:38 And look, I know that this isn't going to look good if you have kids and stuff like that that get it dirty,
03:43 but if you're an older couple, you're driving around the country or doing a lot of touring and it's just the two of you,
03:47 I think that this is going to look really nice and classy, especially if you look after it.
03:51 So up the top there, you've got that sort of darker color.
03:54 It's like a dark gray and then it's offset with this wood grain trim
03:58 and then more of that beige with these leather clad sections down the side. So quite a nice looking setup. This looks ancient.
04:06 This has been around for donkey's years now and they haven't really updated it too much.
04:10 There is a bigger infotainment screen there now, but for the most part,
04:13 this is more a visual tweak than it is some revolutionary update. Now in terms of the materials,
04:18 so that's all nice and soft. You've got a speaker up the top there and the touch points are super soft.
04:23 So they're on the center console and then also on the doors. How soft are they? Well, we've got our durometer.
04:29 We've tested the main surfaces in this car.
04:31 And if you do want to see how this compares to other cars that we've tested, just scroll down and use
04:35 the link in the description. And then on build quality,
04:38 yeah, look, it all feels really nice and solid. There's not a great deal to complain about here.
04:43 This feels like it's still going to be trucking along after 10, 20 years. Moving on to infotainment.
04:49 So up the top here, you have a nine inch color touchscreen.
04:52 If you do want to see a detailed review of this, click up here to watch our pre-recorded
04:56 detailed review of Toyota's infotainment system. Today
04:59 will just be a brief overview and I'll walk you through some of the new features here.
05:03 So you have shortcut buttons off onto the sides, including volume, which I really like.
05:07 I don't like it when there's buttons for volume. It's just far easier to have a knob that you can turn.
05:11 You have AM, FM, DAB plus digital radio.
05:15 So a full suite there. Then in terms of smartphones, you have smartphone mirroring for both Apple and Android.
05:20 It is a wired system. So you'll need to connect your phone with a cable.
05:23 I'll show you what Android Auto looks like to start with.
05:25 So it's a full screen integration. It looks nice and sharp. We'll scroll through that menu. That all looks nice and good.
05:33 Moves around fairly quickly too. Show you what Apple CarPlay looks like as well. Another full screen integration.
05:38 Tiny bit of lag there, but for the most part it works well and pretty sharp too.
05:43 So even though the main infotainment system isn't fantastic,
05:47 it makes up for it with the use of smartphone mirroring technology.
05:50 Now you've also got voice recognition that works with your smartphone or direct to the navigation system
05:55 that's built into the car. So you don't have to have a smartphone for navigation to work, which is good.
06:00 This will also house your monitors for off-road driving. So we'll go through that a little later on. Then ahead of the driver,
06:06 there's another small LCD display with your trip computer and other vital bits of information.
06:11 You've got a 14 speaker sound system. And then in terms of connectivity,
06:14 you've only got one USB port, which is going to be used when you plug your phone up for smartphone mirroring,
06:18 which is a little bit disappointing. You haven't really got any other spaces to charge things.
06:22 You do have a 12 volt outlet, but it'll mean that you need to get a converter. Let's talk safety technology.
06:26 You have autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection.
06:30 You have blind spot monitoring, a lane keeping assistant and a lane departure warning,
06:35 along with radar cruise control. You have front and rear parking sensors and let's have a look at what this camera looks like.
06:42 So it is a 360 degree camera, but the quality is extremely poor.
06:47 I still don't understand in this day and age why they can't get decent quality cameras.
06:51 Surely like a HD camera or something is still really cheap on the market.
06:55 But anyway, you can change the settings here for the field of view and they can also add or remove your guidelines as well.
07:03 So a little bit of functionality there, but yeah, the quality of that is really quite poor.
07:07 Let's talk practicality and we'll start with storage. Where are you going to stick your phone?
07:11 Well, your phone can live, if I get rid of the key there, it can live kind of in that slot just there.
07:16 There is another slot up the front, which is a wireless phone charger in the big Land Cruiser,
07:20 but it isn't here and the phone doesn't fit in there either.
07:24 And I think you can just wedge it into the cup holder up the front there. Now in terms of the cup holders,
07:28 we've got our coffee cup here, fits easily in there and it's also easy to grab as well.
07:33 The bottle can go into here and there's little teeth there to hold it in.
07:35 Now, if you do need a little bit more room up the front there, you can remove that as well.
07:40 And then your bottle can also live in the door.
07:42 There's plenty of room there for small bottles, big bottles and then little bits and pieces on either side.
07:47 But I'm excited about this. So yes, it does slide forward, which is good. But when you open it,
07:52 you have a fridge. So if you do have some
07:54 cold drinks or something that you want to keep cool,
07:57 you've got enough room in there for four drinks and then you just flick the cool box on and it will keep everything ice cold,
08:04 which is very good.
08:05 You have a glove box over here with plenty of room for a big bottle and small bottles as well.
08:11 And then finally you have a sunglass holder up the top that doubles as a mirror.
08:15 Moving on to comfort. So you have tri-zone automatic climate control, two zones for the front,
08:22 you also have heated and cooled seats for the front. And in terms of comfort, these seats are really comfortable as well.
08:29 They've got these perforations in them. So this is where your air comes out from the air conditioning for the seats.
08:34 But it also means that you don't get too sweaty if it is hot outside.
08:37 They hug you in nicely too and the seating position is great. In terms of the steering wheel, it sits nicely in the hand,
08:43 but it's electrically adjustable, as are the seats at the front and there's also memory over here for the driver.
08:49 Everything here is easy to reach and then you have this guy here,
08:52 sun visor with an extension. The other good news is you have grab handles for getting in in the first row. This is often for
09:00 older people who need a little bit of help getting into the car.
09:04 This is going to come in really handy because it does sit quite high off the ground.
09:07 Okay, second row.
09:10 It's actually heaps of legroom here. I was surprised by that.
09:13 So lots of knee room and this seat is pretty far back. Toe room is compromised.
09:17 I can't really sort of get comfortable under there, but headroom is pretty good.
09:21 And again, you've got grab handles to get in plus these holdy handles up the top and these seats slide
09:28 and also recline.
09:30 You've got mat pockets in the back of the seats.
09:33 This is where your third zone of climate control is plus heating for the two outboard seats. Over here
09:38 you've got a 12-volt outlet and then a HDMI port. Now I'll show you what that is for in just a second.
09:44 Over here you have a center armrest with two cup holders built in.
09:48 Show you how that works. Pretty straightforward.
09:51 And then you can also put bottles in the doors as well with room on either side.
09:56 You've also got ISOFIX points on the two outboard seats and then to keep the kids happy you have this DVD screen.
10:02 There is a sunroof up the front,
10:04 but it would be nice if they integrated this DVD screen into the back of the headrest and then had like a nice
10:09 panoramic roof and this is where your air vents are located as well.
10:13 Okay, let's talk third row and how you get in there and whether you can actually fit adults in.
10:18 So you pull this little lever here, it drops the seat forward and slides it forward as well.
10:23 This can also fold like this so you actually get a flat floor and the good news is with the Kakadu,
10:27 look at this, electric.
10:30 It goes up with the push of a button
10:33 and then the seat base extends as well. It's actually a really cool mechanism.
10:38 So I'm going to climb in there now and we'll see how much room there actually is.
10:42 Okay,
10:44 it is a little bit tricky for adults to get in and you've actually got to pull that up as well.
10:51 Okay, legroom. Let's see how we go. So that's that
10:55 backwards. Remember that this can slide forwards as well to give you a bit more room,
10:59 but I'm surprised how much knee and legroom there is here. When we reviewed the Patrol,
11:03 I couldn't even fit in the back of that, whereas this is a smaller vehicle and I can comfortably fit here,
11:08 especially if this is moved forward. Headroom is okay. My head is sort of rested up on there.
11:12 I've got two cup holders off to the side here.
11:15 I've got grab handles too. I've got my own set of air vents as well. And then getting out is pretty straightforward.
11:20 I just pull this lever,
11:22 slide the chair out of the way and then hop on out. Okay, let's talk cargo space and just a recap here.
11:28 This is very handy because this swings open. Sometimes if you're hard up against a wall,
11:33 it's hard to actually get room, whereas right now you can just reach out and get the things that you need.
11:38 Now this does swing open and keep in mind that with these three-row SUVs,
11:43 often you don't have much luggage space behind the third row and it seems like it's the same story here.
11:48 By the way, you can lock this open so it doesn't swing and whack you. Let's see if we can actually fit anything.
11:54 I don't think we can. There's allegedly 120 litres of space there, but I don't think there actually is.
11:59 So we'll move those seats out of the way. There are electric controls for that.
12:02 So let's pop them both down, get them out of the way.
12:05 There they go. There's flies everywhere.
12:09 Okay, and away they go. Given this space is reserved for your third row,
12:15 your jack lives behind this slot here and then you have some tools over here as well.
12:20 I'll show you what that looks like. They live just behind there.
12:23 Your spare tyre lives under the car because remember this is the flat back option.
12:27 So you get a slightly smaller fuel range because it doesn't have the sub tank.
12:31 You have a speaker built into the side there. You have a power outlet off to the side as well.
12:36 We'll throw our luggage in just to give you an idea of how much room there is in there.
12:41 There you go. That fits comfortably as well and I'll show you how you can expand this space to 1800 litres.
12:47 There you go, 1800 litres and a fairly flat load floor.
12:53 We've just hit the road in the Prado Kakadu.
12:58 So the new engine in this gets more power and more torque, which will be welcome news to anyone that's driven one of these,
13:04 especially anyone that's towed with one of these before.
13:06 So now you get 150 kilowatts of power and 500 newton meters of torque from the 2.8 litre
13:12 turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine. It's an engine that's shared with the Hilux,
13:17 so it gets those same power upgrades. That means that behind the wheel here, if we give it a little kick,
13:23 actually feels nice. It doesn't get that vibration or the harshness that the Hilux gets above 3000 rpm,
13:28 and it just feels really nice and smooth behind the wheel. And you don't even need it to hunt through gears,
13:32 you can just lean on the throttle there to get it to lean on the torque band. It just really pushes you along nicely.
13:38 So this engine I think will really complete the package that was
13:41 ultimately let down by just not having enough punch with the previous generation of the Prado.
13:46 All that power and torque is sent through a permanent all-wheel drive system. So it means that
13:52 it's not like a dual-cab ute where you're constantly rear-wheel drive until you manually select all-wheel drive.
13:57 This is just permanently sending torque to all four wheels.
13:59 That just gives it a little bit more confidence behind the wheel if you're driving on gravel or to the snow or something like that.
14:05 You just have ultimate control over what the car's doing. Prado uses a six-speed automatic transmission.
14:10 You've got paddle shifters behind the wheels. You can manually
14:13 run through the gears if you want to be sporty. Look, it's a decent gearbox.
14:17 It's ready to jump back through gears when you need it, but it also doesn't always hunt which means it's able to just pick up and go
14:24 without sort of rifling through two or three gears to get to its sweet spot.
14:28 Toyota doesn't quote a 0-100 time, but I thought we'd test it out anyway to see what kind of number we got.
14:35 (engine noise)
14:37 Toyota claims a combined fuel economy of 7.9 litres per 100km. We are sitting on
14:56 11.8, so that is significantly higher than the
15:01 official combined claim. Keep in mind that, I don't know, we do a fair bit of city driving,
15:06 then a little bit of highway driving, plus some off-road driving.
15:09 So this figure is going to be more indicative of what you get day-to-day. If you are traveling a lot,
15:14 driving around Australia, that kind of thing, you will see that number settle down a little better. Let's talk about drive modes.
15:20 There are a stack here to choose from for some reason. So you've got Comfort and Eco, Normal, Sport and Sport Plus.
15:27 Difference between Sport and Sport Plus
15:31 I couldn't tell you. Both of those will allow the gear shifts to happen a little earlier,
15:35 makes the throttle a little sharper as well. Normal mode is just everything leveled out and then Comfort mode dials it back a notch.
15:41 Eco reduces the air conditioning and reduces the load on the engine. It is worth keeping in mind that this car comes with
15:47 adaptive dampers, so moving through these different modes will adjust the way it feels behind the wheel.
15:53 Then you also have helper springs at the rear. Now, they're designed to help with load carrying,
15:58 so this does have a 3,000 kilogram brake towing capacity.
16:01 You can increase the ride height at the rear so that when you do connect something, it'll sit nice and level instead of looking like it's
16:07 depressed and dragging along the ground. Now, what about handling? So I'm going to pop this into
16:12 Sport Plus
16:15 as we go around this corner. Now, this is where that KDSS system comes in handy. So as it tips in,
16:21 it's actually quite remarkable. The anti-roll bars keep the body dead flat.
16:27 So they do that by just uplifting the edge that's getting compressed and it just keeps the body flat.
16:32 Now, what we'll do when we go for a little bit of an off-road drive is I'll explain how that kinetic dynamic
16:38 suspension system actually works when it comes to off-roading because anti-roll bars are not your friend when it comes to suspension
16:44 extension. Unlike a lot of SUVs in this segment, this still uses a hydraulically assisted steering rack.
16:51 It's not as heavy as the Hilux, but it just doesn't have the communication
16:54 they've been able to dial into EPAS, which is electrically assisted steering systems.
16:59 And that also means that when you are driving and have the lane keeping assistant on,
17:03 instead of it guiding the car back in using the steering, it actually pulses the brakes and it can be quite abrupt and just,
17:08 yeah, it's just not very friendly. Now, what about visibility? So yes, it is a big SUV,
17:14 but
17:15 I don't know, this is going to sound weird. It doesn't actually feel that big.
17:18 I'm sitting here in the driver's seat and it just feels fairly straightforward.
17:21 I can see the edges of the car there with that contoured bonnet. Visibility out the rear is really good because it's quite a big window.
17:27 The wing mirrors are massive, so I can see all the way down the side and there's also blind spot monitoring built in there as well.
17:33 I mean, it just really makes life pretty easy,
17:36 especially with that 360 degree camera front and rear parking sensors when it comes to actually navigating in a city. It's all pretty straightforward.
17:43 What's cabin noise like? Well, it's pretty quiet in here. I don't really hear a great deal.
17:49 There is a tiny bit of wind noise, but if you stomp on the throttle, you don't get much engine noise infiltrating the cabin.
17:55 It really is just nice and peaceful. It means if you are doing a long distance drive,
17:58 it's just going to soak up the miles. Now, being a Toyota, it has an incredibly good air conditioner.
18:03 It is stinking hot outside at the moment and it just blows out cold air. I have found though that Toyotas,
18:09 they just don't heat for some reason. So in winter, you're just constantly freezing.
18:13 Let me know in the comments section below if you find the same thing with your Toyota or whether I'm just making that up.
18:19 Okay, so you're buying this because you're probably going to be driving across the country or doing a little bit of off-roading every now and then.
18:26 The good news is that this comes jam-packed with off-road equipment.
18:30 Most that you'll never use, but I wanted to run you through all of it
18:32 just so you get an idea of what it all means. So in terms of the off-road specifications, you have 219 millimeters of ground clearance.
18:38 You have an approach angle of 30.4 degrees.
18:41 That's the angle of the face you can approach before hitting the front of the car and then a departure angle of 23.5 degrees.
18:47 It's the angle of the face you can hit on the way back when you're coming down a hill.
18:50 You also have a 700 millimeter wading depth, but the river is too high for us to test that out today.
18:56 And then in terms of the hardware itself, you have full-time four-wheel drive, which is for your standard on-road driving.
19:02 It's high range 4x4. You have low range four-wheel drive.
19:05 You also have a center differential lock, which you can engage in high range 4x4 and a rear differential lock
19:11 which you can engage in low range 4x4.
19:13 Now if none of this really makes too much sense to you, click up here to watch our 4WD Controls Explained video
19:19 that runs you through what each of these modes means and exactly what you'll get out of engaging each of them.
19:24 You've also got Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select and the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, also known as KDSS.
19:31 I'll explain how all of that works in just a second.
19:34 So let's start off here with our logs. I'll run you through a Crawl Control first.
19:38 You have five predetermined speeds you can pick from. So to engage that you put the car into neutral, select low range.
19:44 It engages that low range transfer case, switches off the safety systems and then we click
19:50 Crawl Control and then we select our speed. Now you can hear
19:54 in the background there the traction control system
19:57 working as it brings you up to speed. We're moving very slowly at the moment.
20:03 But what I'm going to do is deliberately get it stuck at the bottom of these logs and we'll see how well it handles that.
20:08 So reduce ourselves to speed one as we approach the logs.
20:12 Okay, here we go. There's the first one. So you can hear the car managing that, accelerating a little as it goes.
20:18 Sounds like a machine gun here.
20:20 Okay, there we go. The car's now stuck. So I'm going to see what it's going to do.
20:26 I'll put a little bit of steering lock in.
20:31 (Car engine revving)
20:33 It's so cool.
20:37 I love this stuff. So yes, okay, I could do this all on my own.
20:40 But the fact that as a novice you could get behind the wheel here and have the car manage everything is really cool.
20:46 It sounds like it's breaking the car, but
20:48 all of those noises are perfectly normal and we're ascending this hill
20:52 without too many dramas. So that's impressive. So that is Crawl Control.
20:58 So let that crest the hill. We'll stop the car there. We'll disable Crawl Control now.
21:02 What I'm now going to do is put the Multi-Terrain Select System on and I'll select
21:08 Rock because we're about to go over a set of rocks that are quite high and we'll make our way down the rocks. Now,
21:13 Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. Sounds fancy, doesn't it?
21:17 Well, this car has anti-roll bars and when we drive on the road that helps keep the car flat through corners.
21:22 But the problem is it limits the amount of suspension
21:26 travel you actually get because of those
21:28 anti-roll bars. What the KDSS system, which was developed here in Australia, in Western Australia,
21:33 it's able to disconnect the anti-roll bars using a set of hydraulic
21:37 lines and that increases your suspension travel. So as we go over some of these rocks that are now
21:42 scratching
21:44 the underbody, we're going to see full travel of our rear wheel there.
21:48 It's going to lift off the ground as we descend and what that does is it disconnects that roll bar.
21:53 And this is all automatic. You don't need to do anything. It senses when that happens. Okay, we're making our way down.
21:58 One of the things I didn't like about the previous generations of Prado was how sensitive the brake pedal was.
22:03 It feels like they've improved that because I'm not lurching forwards
22:06 every single time we hit a rock and we come down the hills.
22:09 So that's really impressive there and you've also got hill descent control as well to help control descent speeds.
22:14 You can also use crawl control going downhill as well.
22:17 The other cool thing is you get this off-road display while you're driving. It shows you the track that the car is heading in.
22:23 So that means you're never going to find yourself in the wrong rut. It shows you what the
22:26 extremities of the sides of the car are doing. You get an
22:29 inclinometer, whatever it's called, the ability to see the angle that you're climbing, descending and
22:36 rolling on and then you can also switch between different views as well.
22:39 So this is going to be handy if you do a lot of off-road driving. This makes plotting your path much easier.
22:44 So the Toyota Prado, look to be honest, it's not really amazing at anything in particular, but it does everything really well.
22:52 It doesn't have the best engine in the segment, doesn't have the best tech in the segment,
22:55 but I know in my heart of hearts if I was doing a drive around Australia,
22:59 I'd probably want to be doing it in this. It's got all the creature comforts and I know that
23:03 there's a Toyota dealer on every single corner.
23:05 I know that it's probably going to be highly reliable
23:08 and I'll be able to stick a trailer on the back and not have to think twice about it all.
23:12 So, I don't know, let me know in your comments section below. I hope that's not too much of a cop-out
23:16 because, you know, it is just a Toyota product. They just go on and on forever.
23:20 So let me know what your thoughts are in the comments section below.
23:22 What would you buy instead of this if there is anyone in the market for this?
23:25 Is there something, an alternative that you think people should consider as well?
