In the same way we had to wait some time for the all-new Wigo’s arrival, we also had to wait a bit to actually test it over several days on local roads. Toyota’s entry-level offering in its local lineup remains a popular option among fleet and budget-car buyers, but with this generation, it levels up on features, build, and even performance. That said, like pretty much everything you can buy these days, it also comes with a bigger price tag.

For this review, we tested the top-spec 2024 Toyota Wigo G CVT, priced at P729,000. Yes, it’s got more toys and sharper looks than before, and is now equipped with a continuously variable transmission. But is this all-new model worth the wait and the asking price? Click play on the video above for our verdict, and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

00:00 We waited a while for this one and now it's finally here.
00:04 This is the all-new Toyota Wigo, and we had to wait for another while to finally drive
00:09 it out on public roads.
00:11 So how does this new subcompact hatchback fare in Philippine conditions?
00:16 Let's find out.
00:27 Introducing the all-new Wigo is a familiar 1.0-liter 3-cylinder naturally aspirated gasoline
00:32 engine.
00:33 This one generates 66 hp and 89 Nm of torque.
00:37 What's new here is the CVT.
00:39 It still is available with a manual transmission for the base variant, but for the higher trims,
00:43 you get this CVT.
00:45 Now I wasn't exactly a fan of the 4-speed automatic back then because I felt like it
00:50 was a bit lacking, especially when you're on the highway.
00:53 But I was a bit skeptical about the CVT too.
00:56 I am not really a fan of CVTs myself, but I was proven wrong with the new Wigo.
01:02 When I drove this for the first time in BGC, I felt like it had a bit more punch to it,
01:07 and now I'm driving it on public roads, it just reinforces my first impressions.
01:12 I'm sorry, Toyota, I was wrong.
01:14 I thought the CVT was gonna be bad, but it's actually pretty fun.
01:17 Now there still isn't a lot of power when you're cruising at about 80 km/h on the highway,
01:22 so overtaking will still take some time, but what I can tell you is that with this 1.0-liter
01:28 CVT setup, it's actually pretty fuel-efficient.
01:32 On the highway, cruising between 80 to 100 km/h, it can do easily minimum 20 km/l.
01:39 I wasn't able to check specifically for city driving because I wasn't able to drive this
01:43 around traffic that much, but in mixed conditions, I did get 14 to 15 km/l, which is pretty impressive.
01:52 As for its handling, well, I wouldn't exactly call this one agile, but what I noticed is
01:57 there isn't a lot of body roll anymore when you're taking corners at speed.
02:01 As for ride comfort, well, again, it still is the same city car we know, so you will
02:05 still feel a lot of the road underneath you.
02:08 NVH levels are somewhat lower than I expected, and it's not exactly that noisy inside this
02:15 cabin.
02:16 As you can see, some cars are passing by, but I don't exactly hear them, which is actually
02:20 pretty good—it does a lot for comfort.
02:22 That being said, you will still want to avoid large potholes because you still have 14-inch
02:28 wheels underneath this.
02:29 Drive over a pretty sizable bump and you will really feel that thing.
02:33 Now, the Wigood still doesn't come with active safety features, but some of you might be
02:38 wondering what the heck is on this windshield.
02:40 No, those aren't sensors.
02:42 That's actually a dashboard camera.
02:44 That dash cam comes as standard, and it can be connected to your smartphone via a dedicated
02:49 app.
02:50 And yes, it also has a microSD card with it, and you can download the footage via your
02:54 phone.
02:56 So one more thing, the all-new Wigo is also still as easy as ever to park.
03:00 It comes with a reversing camera with rear parking sensors.
03:05 It's got a wide angle, and it's actually pretty clear.
03:08 One thing you'll notice though is there's a very, very loud beeping sound when you shift
03:12 to reverse.
03:16 This interior just screams Daihatsu.
03:19 It looks a lot like the Rays' cabin.
03:21 The layout is similar.
03:22 You have hard plastics all around, you have these angled sharp designs, and you have this
03:27 floating panel display here up front.
03:29 Now, you don't get a lot of high-tech amenities here, but you do get some of the basics.
03:34 Let's start with the steering wheel.
03:35 You do have steering wheel-mounted controls for this head unit only.
03:38 You don't get stuff like cruise control, which you probably would find here.
03:42 One thing that's interesting here though is Toyota added a push-to-start ignition down
03:46 here so no rotary key here whatsoever.
03:48 Now, this instrument cluster, it's not fully digital.
03:52 You do get a fuel gauge, the range meter, the odometer, trip A, trip B, and fuel consumption
04:01 gauge.
04:02 You can all find that in this small display here.
04:05 The speedometer and the rev meter, they're all still analog, and that's okay.
04:11 That's pretty much what you'd expect from a car from this price point.
04:14 Over here, you have this small display for the AC.
04:18 There's no automatic climate control here, but again, that's okay.
04:22 Now, underneath, you have two cup holders.
04:25 Toyota has always had a lot of cup holders.
04:27 What I am not a big fan about is this faux carbon fiber finish right here.
04:33 Sure, it's okay, I guess, at least compared to the fake stitching that Toyota has been
04:38 using for years.
04:39 At least this one looks a bit better.
04:41 You also have an extra cup holder here, another extra small cubby here, a glove compartment
04:47 here, and that's about it.
04:51 Let's move on to this display.
04:53 At first, actually in the big test, I said that this was pretty wonky.
04:57 I couldn't make Apple CarPlay work, but for some reason or whatever reason, it just suddenly
05:02 started working.
05:03 So I guess that's okay.
05:05 It's not that big of a display and it's not the smoothest, but again, you do have smartphone
05:10 connectivity and that's all you need.
05:12 The sound it produces through the four-speaker setup is also pretty decent.
05:16 You don't get power adjustment for the seats, but you do get six-way adjustment, so you
05:20 do have seat height adjustment which Anton was very, very happy about.
05:24 The seats, by the way, are pretty comfortable.
05:26 They're soft, they're fabric, and they have good bolsters on the sides.
05:30 So when you're on a long drive, this is gonna be very comfortable.
05:33 As far as space goes, this is actually pretty okay as well.
05:36 I have decent headroom, I have decent legroom, and my knees don't actually feel like they're
05:41 hitting everything with every single move.
05:44 Elbow room though, there's something to be desired because when Charles and I were sitting
05:48 here, we kept hitting our elbows against one another and probably we're just damn big and
05:53 the car is just too small.
05:55 Anyway, let's move on to the back.
05:56 Alright, so I'm here at the back and this seat is set to my preferred driving position.
06:01 I have this much space from my knee to this seat and this much space from my head to the
06:06 ceiling.
06:07 It's okay.
06:08 I'm about 5'5", 5'6", and I have no problems fitting here.
06:12 Someone taller, however, might have to slouch a bit because you will hit your head here.
06:16 That's where this curvature in the front seat comes into play.
06:19 It actually opens up a bit more knee space.
06:23 However, there are some parts on the floor we would change if we could because it compromises
06:28 space by a bit.
06:29 We actually mentioned this in our big test.
06:31 The mounting for the front seat gets in the way of your feet, so it's not that easy to
06:35 stretch your legs.
06:36 Same can be said about this tunnel in the middle.
06:38 Now, one thing to note here is that this may be a five-seater but you will have a hard
06:43 time fitting three large people at the back.
06:47 Toyota has gone and overhauled the design of the new Wigo.
06:51 While the shape and the silhouette of the old one can still be seen here, you can see
06:55 that this one now has a more aggressive and a lot sportier design.
07:00 Toyota has opted for the swept-back headlamps and a chrome accent here in the middle to
07:04 add some flair to the front end.
07:07 Toyota has also added vertical DRLs on the front end which give it a more updated and
07:11 more modern look.
07:12 Now, on the side, they didn't really change much here but you do get new wheels.
07:17 That's something I have to point out.
07:18 More changes, though, can be found on the rear end.
07:21 At the rear, it's more of the same story.
07:24 Toyota has opted for a busier and more sculpted look for the Wigo.
07:27 You see more lines, more angles here on the tailgate now more than ever.
07:31 But really, what's different now is that this one has a sloping rear end.
07:35 The old one had a flat back and it didn't really do well for the look.
07:39 I don't know.
07:41 But I have to say, I'm still torn about this design.
07:44 I'm not sure what I said during my first impressions video but now looking at it, I like it.
07:50 But when I'm looking at it from afar, sometimes it's not working for me.
07:53 So maybe in a few months, I don't know, I'm gonna get used to this and maybe I have a
07:57 final say on this one.
07:58 Anyway, since we're already here, let's check out the trunk.
08:02 So in our previous big test, we actually compared this one to that of the Brio and this won
08:07 by a pretty significant margin.
08:10 It was easier to put things in here.
08:11 Now, I have right now a piece of luggage, some camping chairs, some bags, some camera
08:17 equipment, and they all fit perfectly fine.
08:19 And what's good here is that the tonneau cover comes as standard.
08:22 The only nitpick I have here is that you have to fold the rear bench before you can take
08:27 this out so it's not as seamless as you would think.
08:31 For years, the Wigo has always been one of Toyota's best-selling models.
08:35 And with this new iteration finally here, I don't think that's gonna change.
08:39 If anything, it's even gonna prove that in this crossover crazy market, there's still
08:43 some room left for a small hatchback like this one.
08:46 Now it's not as affordable as it was before, but let's face it, which car is anyway?
08:52 And besides, at the end of the day, this is still a well-balanced package and still remains
08:56 to be one of the most practical options at its price point.
09:00 Now let's go to scoring, but let's kick it off with the pros and cons.
09:04 Let's start with the pros.
09:06 Number one, it's always, always gonna be fuel efficiency.
09:09 The all-new Wigo can do 20+ km/L on the highway and can easily do 14-15 km/L in mixed conditions.
09:17 And that's with my non-economical driving.
09:19 I'm sure you guys can do even a lot better than that one.
09:22 And number two, it's very easy to maneuver.
09:25 So for newbie drivers and beginners, this is actually a perfect starter car.
09:30 It has a very small footprint and it's very easy to drive around tight spaces.
09:34 And it's got parking aids to boot.
09:36 It's got a reversing camera with rear parking sensors and that is a very, very good bonus.
09:41 And number three, it's actually pretty engaging to drive.
09:45 Compared to the old Wigo, which was to say the least pretty boring when you're behind
09:48 the wheel, this one is actually a lot more fun.
09:51 Toyota actually did a good job with that 1.0-liter 3-cylinder CVT combo and it was a lot better
09:56 than I expected.
09:58 And as for the cons, there's only one glaring con that I can think of, and that's the price tag.
10:04 This top-spec Wigo stickers for Php 729,000.
10:09 Now I know I said earlier that this still is one of the most practical options out there.
10:14 It still doesn't take away the fact that you're just Php 100,000 or so away from a much bigger
10:19 crossover, and that's always something to consider when you're buying a car like this one.
10:24 And now, to summarize everything, for the score, I'm gonna give this a solid 8 out of 10.
