00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 The all new Mercedes-Benz S-Class has just lobbed.
00:04 Now the S-Class is one of those cars
00:05 that always debuts new features in the car world.
00:09 So today I wanted to take you through
00:10 five of the coolest features in the new S-Class
00:13 and what we can expect in future Mercedes-Benz models
00:16 down the track.
00:17 Before we do that, I'm gonna give you a quick overview
00:20 of the new S-Class.
00:21 Now it starts off with W223.
00:23 That's the code name for the short wheelbase.
00:25 The long wheelbase is V223.
00:28 It's gonna launch with two petrol and three diesel engines.
00:32 All of them are three litre six cylinder engines
00:36 and they're all mated to a nine speed automatic transmission
00:39 with 48 volt mild hybrid technology.
00:42 Only one of the diesels is rear wheel drive.
00:44 The rest are all wheel drive.
00:46 There is a V8 coming along with a plug-in hybrid
00:48 that's expected to have 100 kilometres of driving range.
00:52 And then in addition to that, down the track,
00:54 I reckon we'll see some beastie AMG models
00:57 because that is what the S-Class has always been about.
00:59 Four wheel drive steering is on offer
01:02 and that improves your dynamic driving
01:03 but also reduces the turning circle by 1.9 metres.
01:06 Stuff like this is important
01:08 because you have to consider the size of the S-Class,
01:11 especially with long wheelbase.
01:12 They're often picking people up,
01:13 having to do tight U-turns.
01:15 Four wheel steering will be completely invaluable
01:17 to people who need tight parking ability.
01:19 In addition to that, boot space is increased to 550 litres,
01:24 which is an increase of around 10%.
01:26 And it has the equal lowest coefficient of drag
01:29 of any car on the market at 0.22.
01:32 Now, if you do want a full breakdown
01:34 of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class,
01:36 you can click on the link up here,
01:37 which will take you to the Car Expert website
01:39 where you can get all of the details.
01:40 But let's get cracking with five of the coolest features
01:44 on the new S-Class.
01:45 Let's start with digital lights.
01:47 This takes the technology of the headlight even further.
01:50 We've seen matrix LED, we've seen laser headlights,
01:53 but the digital light is brand new to cars
01:55 and is debuted here in the S-Class.
01:57 Now, if you do wanna see a comparison we shot
02:00 between halogen LED, matrix LED, and laser headlights,
02:03 you can use the link above there to take you through
02:06 and have a look at that.
02:07 But what is a digital light?
02:08 Well, it takes the matrix LED light even further.
02:11 The S-Class uses as standard
02:12 an 84 LED module set up in the headlights,
02:16 but the digital light comprises of three powerful LEDs
02:20 with, get this, 1.3 million micro mirrors inside them.
02:25 What does all that mean?
02:26 Well, it means you have an effective resolution
02:27 of 2.6 million pixels.
02:30 Now, to put that into context
02:31 and into something that's going to make sense,
02:34 this right here, it is a graphics calculator.
02:37 You may have used this in high school.
02:38 This has an effective resolution of about 6,000 pixels.
02:43 High definition television, that has about 2 million pixels.
02:47 So the headlight in this car that's very compact
02:50 and put into that small cross section
02:52 within the actual headlight
02:53 has over 2 million pixels available.
02:56 What does all that allow you to do?
02:58 Well, this is where it gets interesting
02:59 because it has a digital processor
03:00 that's driven by a graphics card
03:02 and it has a constant video stream
03:04 that comes through to the headlights.
03:06 When the car approaches things like a roadwork zone,
03:09 it allows it to project images out onto the road.
03:12 You can project things like an excavator
03:14 if you're in a roadwork zone.
03:15 If you're in a narrow section of road,
03:16 it'll project lines onto the road.
03:18 And if there is a pedestrian up ahead that you don't see,
03:21 it will start projecting little dots onto the road
03:24 so it lights up the pedestrian.
03:26 I mean, this type of stuff right here
03:28 really takes the headlight game further
03:29 because you only have 84 pixels
03:32 in a standard matrix LED headlight that's fitted to the car.
03:35 So I don't know how useful this will be,
03:37 whether it's just a lighting flex here from Mercedes-Benz,
03:40 but I think it's really cool
03:41 that they are pioneering headlights with this technology.
03:45 Moving on to safety,
03:45 this is something that Mercedes-Benz,
03:47 I guess, prides themselves in.
03:49 And often the S-Class is the first car
03:51 to debut safety features
03:52 that then filter down into cheaper Mercedes-Benz variants.
03:56 Okay, so what about the overall structure?
03:58 It's 60 kilograms lighter,
04:00 and that's due to the overall use of aluminum,
04:04 or aluminum if you're American.
04:05 There's about 50% of aluminum used throughout the structure,
04:09 and that is now strong enough to withstand impacts
04:11 and also helps make the car lighter in general.
04:14 But there's something inside the car
04:16 that I need to share with you guys.
04:17 It is a front airbag.
04:19 I know you're thinking, "Wow, front airbags, big deal."
04:21 But it's a front airbag for the second row.
04:25 So it fires from the back of the front seats,
04:27 and it creates a tubular structure.
04:29 Now, the tubular structure is filled with compressed gas
04:32 that fires from a cylinder within the seats,
04:34 and it fills it with 16 liters of that gas
04:38 so that it inflates quickly.
04:39 And then inside the tubular structure,
04:41 to give you an idea of the size of it,
04:42 there's 70 liters of volume.
04:45 And this can fill around other parts.
04:48 So if you do have a baby seat
04:49 or some other object in the second row,
04:51 this will fill and then encase it
04:53 with that tubular structure.
04:55 Now, it is a really hard thing to get your head around,
04:57 but it makes perfect sense when you think about it.
05:00 If you have body parts moving around
05:01 or someone that perhaps isn't wearing a seatbelt properly,
05:04 it gives them something to hit
05:06 before they hit the seat in front of them.
05:08 So any chance you get to increase the padding
05:11 and reduce the amount of velocity a person has
05:13 as they fly around the cabin, the better.
05:15 Now, where does all this come about?
05:17 Well, it's ESF.
05:18 It's the Experimental Safety Vehicle.
05:21 Mercedes-Benz has generations of these cars
05:23 from the early '70s that demonstrate safety features
05:26 the company is testing.
05:28 And last year, I was in Stuttgart
05:30 where they were showing some of this technology,
05:32 and they showed us this airbag that inflates from a seat.
05:35 And I thought, this looks really cool.
05:36 And in fact, while we were there, just a fun side story,
05:39 I had the chance to check out ESF 13,
05:41 which was the 13th car that they built
05:43 with some of this innovative safety tech.
05:45 Now, it was built to withstand an impact
05:47 from the rear of 80 kilometers an hour
05:49 and a side impact of 25 kilometers an hour.
05:52 Now, the only problem with being able to resist
05:55 that kind of damage is that it increased weight
05:57 in this car by 700 kilograms.
06:00 It made the car a meter longer than it needed to be.
06:03 It also meant most of the interior
06:05 was covered in padding as well,
06:07 so that if a person did get thrown around,
06:09 they were just going to impact a soft surface.
06:11 So some of these cars are a little bit unrealistic
06:13 in terms of what they do,
06:14 but they forced the engineers to test their ability
06:17 to come up with new technology.
06:18 And that extends to a feature called Pre-Safe.
06:21 Now, this was debuted in the E-Class,
06:22 but they have now fitted it to the S-Class.
06:25 It's a function that allows the side bolster in the seat
06:28 to rapidly fire in the event of a side impact.
06:31 In addition to that,
06:32 the car's able to raise the side by eight centimeters
06:35 rapidly with an impending side impact.
06:38 What that allows the car to do
06:40 is distribute some of the forces in that impact
06:42 to lower parts of the car
06:43 that will better absorb crash forces
06:46 instead of the thinner parts of the center door.
06:48 And what about that side bolster?
06:50 So this is going to get a little bit technical,
06:52 but just bear with me for a second.
06:53 So the formula for the average force is
06:56 average force times distance
06:58 equals half mass times velocity squared.
07:01 So if the mass and the velocity are consistent,
07:03 which we know they will be,
07:04 if you've got a car coming towards you,
07:06 it weighs a certain amount,
07:07 it moves at a certain velocity.
07:09 If we were to change the distance though,
07:11 you increase the distance,
07:12 it reduces the amount of force that you feel on your body
07:16 when that impact happens.
07:17 So by firing the bolster in the seat,
07:19 you're moving the human away from the force
07:22 and it means that you will feel less of that.
07:24 So every centimeter counts when it comes to impacts in cars.
07:28 And I love the fact that they are thinking about
07:31 just even the most minor ways
07:32 of getting a human better protected
07:34 in the event of a side impact.
07:36 Okay, let's have a look at the interior of the car.
07:38 We'll start off with the sound system.
07:40 The optional Burmester sound system has 31 speakers
07:44 that create 4D sound.
07:46 What is 4D sound?
07:47 Well, that is getting an extra dimension
07:49 in the sound sphere.
07:51 And in this case, it is the dimension of feel.
07:54 You are going to feel when you get punches of bass,
07:57 when you get those high frequency tweets,
08:00 and they use what they call exciters.
08:02 They sit in the headrests of these seats
08:04 and they're able to give you that sensation
08:07 of your body shaking a bit.
08:08 So if you do get a big bit of bass,
08:10 you feel it through the body
08:11 and that makes your head think
08:12 that it's more powerful than it is.
08:14 So this is one of these features
08:15 that they're adding to these cars
08:16 to give you that immersive sound experience inside the car.
08:19 So I'll be keen to see what that sounds like.
08:21 31 speakers is insane.
08:23 I can't think of any other car
08:24 that has such a high speaker count.
08:26 It's almost like they're just trying to create a record here
08:28 with the most amount of speakers they can.
08:30 And I'm keen to see
08:31 whether that 4D experience actually works.
08:33 Next up is LED lighting.
08:35 Often we talk about the amount of ambient LED lights
08:37 you get in a cabin that allow you to make it all colorful
08:41 and give it that dynamic atmosphere.
08:43 Well, they have fitted 250 LEDs
08:46 to the interior of the S-Class.
08:48 Now it uses something interesting.
08:49 They're spaced 1.6 centimetres apart
08:52 and they're projected through fibre optics,
08:54 which make them look like they're one continuous module
08:57 and gives you that dynamic appearance.
08:59 And the advantage of this technology
09:00 is kind of on the safety front as well.
09:03 Yes, you can customise them
09:04 so they make the interior look and feel nice.
09:07 But in terms of safety,
09:08 if you go to open the door and there's a car coming
09:10 or there's a cyclist or someone running,
09:11 they're able to flash very quickly,
09:13 get your attention fast as well
09:15 so that you can stop opening the door
09:17 and you're not going to hit it into an unsuspecting cyclist
09:20 or person running past your car.
09:22 Now the final cool feature in the new S-Class is MBUX 2.
09:27 It is the second generation
09:28 of Mercedes-Benz user experience.
09:30 That is, I guess, the Mercedes-Benz terminology
09:33 for their infotainment system.
09:35 This will look completely different
09:36 to any other Mercedes-Benz product because it is.
09:39 It's a new screen, a 12.8-inch screen.
09:41 I don't have the exact dimensions
09:42 and it kind of looks like a portrait screen to start with,
09:45 but it's quite rectangular in shape.
09:47 It looks pretty impressive there inside the S-Class cabin,
09:49 or does it?
09:50 Let me know in the comments below
09:52 whether you think it's overkill
09:53 or do you think this will suit the S-Class over time?
09:55 Now it's interesting because they've really beefed up
09:58 the processing power here.
09:59 So it has 50% increase in processing power.
10:03 It's got memory bandwidth
10:05 of just over 40,000 megabytes a second,
10:08 and it means that it's smarter as well.
10:10 It can process up to 30 languages
10:13 and it's able to use the cloud
10:14 to help decipher what you're saying.
10:16 So if you have a strong accent
10:17 or perhaps you're speaking in a language
10:19 that they haven't fully developed,
10:20 it actually processes it through the Mercedes-Benz cloud.
10:23 And then that means it can customize the responses to use.
10:26 It can also pick up new words and phrases.
10:29 So if there's a new phrase or cool word,
10:31 like that's rad, that could reappear,
10:33 or one that I heard the other day,
10:35 I had a mirror of a week.
10:37 I don't know, it's short for nightmare.
10:39 So if these things become trendy
10:41 and you come into your S-Class and say,
10:43 "Look, I've had a mirror of a day.
10:45 Please turn up the temperature inside the cabin."
10:47 Mercedes-Benz user experience
10:49 will know exactly what you're talking about,
10:51 even if nobody else does.
10:52 Then you've also got cool features
10:53 like an interior assistant.
10:56 Now this uses an overhead camera to watch you
10:58 while you're driving and while you're sitting inside the car
11:01 and an example of where this is handy,
11:03 if you look over your shoulder to look out the back window,
11:06 it's able to lower the sun blind
11:07 'cause it assumes that you wanna see what's going on.
11:10 If you wanna adjust your mirror,
11:11 all you do is look at the wing mirror you wanna adjust
11:14 and it will automatically select it
11:15 so you can make that adjustment immediately
11:17 without needing to do anything manually.
11:19 So I guess it is a bit overkill
11:20 and I'm hoping it doesn't go down the path
11:22 of things like gesture control in BMW.
11:24 I find that technology absolutely useless.
11:27 I get the feeling that this might be in the same case
11:29 but you never know, it might find a use for some people.
11:32 All of this is controlled through a new 12.8 inch screen
11:34 that uses OLED technology.
11:36 So OLED is different to standard LED
11:39 because it doesn't require backlighting
11:41 and what they've done is they've put multiple layers
11:43 of these screens on top of each other
11:45 to create a 3D look and feel
11:47 and they've also integrated haptic feedback.
11:49 So as you push onto the screen,
11:51 you get a little click on your finger
11:53 and they've also condensed all the buttons
11:55 so you don't have a litany of buttons in the center there.
11:57 It's all kind of integrated into the screen.
11:59 Also as part of MBUX 2 is over the air updates.
12:02 Now, Mercedes-Benz has made a big song and dance
12:04 about these but a lot of manufacturers
12:06 have been doing this for a while, namely Tesla.
12:08 You get new features overnight
12:09 and Mercedes-Benz is allowing you to update things
12:11 in the car as time goes on.
12:13 You can also add features through the store as well.
12:15 If there's anything you wanna add to your car
12:17 that Mercedes-Benz has developed,
12:18 you'll be able to download it through the store
12:20 and pay where required.
12:22 So that has been a quick look
12:23 at the all new Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
12:26 Remember that we have a stack more detail
12:28 at the Car Expert website.
12:29 You can click on the link up there
12:31 to be taken to our news article.
12:33 Oh, by the way, there's a new key for the S-Class as well.
12:35 This is what it looks like.
12:36 I don't mind it, it looks very sharp and swish.
12:39 So very big fan of that.
12:40 Now, let me know what you think in the comments below
12:42 about the all new Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
12:45 Do you think there's enough world first technology
12:48 in this car or have they dropped the ball a little bit?
12:50 Let me know in the comment section below.
12:52 Make sure you check out the rest of our channel
12:54 and some of the other cool stuff we have there.
