Bengals QB Joe Burrow Out for Season | Instant Reaction
Transcript
00:00 that Joe Burrow will miss the rest of the 2023 season
00:03 with an acute wrist injury that he suffered
00:06 on Thursday night in Baltimore.
00:08 And obviously, it's just a huge, huge loss
00:12 for every single reason that you can imagine,
00:14 football-wise, leadership-wise,
00:16 everything he's done for the franchise and for this season.
00:20 The good news is, is he is expected to make a full recovery,
00:23 will likely have to undergo surgery,
00:25 although it's not confirmed.
00:26 Obviously, this has been a very quick turnaround.
00:29 We are, what, 20 hours, less than that,
00:34 18 hours since he suffered the injury,
00:35 roughly 19 hours, something like that, as I record this.
00:37 So a lot has happened,
00:40 and Joe Burrow going to miss the season.
00:44 He did say that he expects to be around the team,
00:46 which I thought was interesting,
00:47 so hopefully that's the case.
00:49 And I'll just get this out of the way early in the video.
00:52 There was a lot of talk about the wrap that was on his hand
00:55 when he got off the flight and landed in Baltimore.
00:58 He confirmed it was a compression sleeve.
01:00 He was wearing a compression sleeve on his arm.
01:03 Does that a decent amount of time
01:05 when there's travel to prevent swelling.
01:07 And I wrote about this at AllBengals.com
01:11 on Thursday before the game.
01:13 Players wear this stuff all the time.
01:15 Anytime there's any kind of bruise,
01:17 nick, something like that, they wear it
01:20 because it helps them recover, and especially on a short week.
01:22 And so he confirmed that this injury is completely unrelated,
01:26 suffered it, or at least appeared to suffer it
01:28 when Jadavion Clowney took him to the ground,
01:31 and then he felt a pop when he threw the ball to Joe Mixon.
01:34 So, look, this is, I've described it as a nightmare
01:38 multiple times on social media, certainly here on CBT,
01:42 and I don't really know how else you describe it.
01:45 Because this team, they've overcome a lot.
01:47 They've shown they can overcome a lot
01:48 over the past three-plus seasons.
01:51 It's a tough ask to say, all right,
01:54 overcome not having Joe Burrow for the final seven games.
01:57 Oh, and by the way, you're five and five
01:59 in in last place in the division.
02:01 There is a lot there.
02:02 It's a mountain to climb.
02:04 And we'll get into that, how they can,
02:06 and all of those things.
02:07 But today, it's certainly about Joe Burrow,
02:09 the vibe with him and Zach.
02:12 I think they both accepted it.
02:15 There's not really much else you can do.
02:17 They're mature in that way.
02:18 Zach Taylor certainly-- and we posted clips of both of them
02:21 right here on Cincinnati Bengals Talk.
02:23 Zach was already looking ahead, which
02:26 that's his job as head coach.
02:27 Joe Burrow and Zach Taylor are both
02:29 throwing their weight behind Jake Browning,
02:31 who will become the starter with AJ McCarron as the backup.
02:34 But there's no denying that this situation is--
02:40 it's just really, really tough.
02:41 And we'll see how they respond.
02:43 We'll see how the team responds.
02:45 As far as other injury updates, real quick,
02:47 before we get back to Burrow, it sounds
02:48 like there's some optimism around Cam Taylor-Britt.
02:51 He's dealing with a thigh bruise, a little quad injury.
02:54 So with the extra couple of days here after the Thursday night
02:57 game, I feel like there's a chance he could play in--
03:00 against Pittsburgh, rather, here at Paycourt Stadium
03:02 on the 26th of November.
03:04 And it will be Jake Browning making his first NFL start.
03:08 As for Joe Burrow, he's going to get a few other opinions,
03:12 doctor-wise, and really talk to the doctor,
03:14 sit down, make a decision.
03:16 The decision is probably 99% of the way
03:18 there already that it's going to be surgery.
03:21 And he is projected to make a full recovery.
03:24 That recovery timeline is sort of up in the air a bit.
03:28 But the good news is that he should be his normal self.
03:31 This isn't something that can or should linger.
03:35 He'll take it into the offseason, obviously,
03:37 rehab and all of those things, and hopefully
03:40 get back to normal.
03:41 So it's-- any adjective you want to describe, that's negative.
03:46 That's what it is right now here at Paycourt Stadium
03:48 for the Bengals.
03:49 And it's something that they fought off with the calf.
03:54 That's the crazy part about this.
03:55 Obviously, on July 27th, what happened calf-wise,
03:59 and they found a way-- he found a way to not miss a game,
04:02 despite that.
04:03 And it's crazy to think, but five days ago--
04:06 five and a half days ago now--
04:08 they were 5-3.
04:09 Serging had won four straight.
04:11 And it felt like the Bengals were
04:12 going to make this playoff push and push for the division
04:15 and all of these things.
04:16 But in that quick five days--
04:17 really, a four-day span--
04:19 everything goes by the wayside.
04:22 And they're really scrapping.
04:25 And they're going to have to be a scrappy team if they're
04:27 going to win some games.
04:29 And I know there's going to be a lot of people saying,
04:31 season over, all of those things.
04:32 And honestly, today isn't the day for me
04:34 to analyze what this team's going to be or not
04:36 be without Joe Burrow.
04:38 I think it's about Joe Burrow.
04:40 He is the story.
04:41 He's out.
04:42 And we posted, like I said, a clip of him,
04:45 a clip of Zach Taylor, a ton of reaction
04:47 as well at allbengals.com.
04:48 Because when something like this happens,
04:50 it has ripple effects not just here in Cincinnati,
04:54 not just in the AFC North, not just in the AFC,
