A walkthrough of some of the important hand signals for bikers. As bikers are more exposed and more vulnerable on the roads, they need to have their own way of communication. This video takes us through a variety of hand signals that will come into use on a daily basis and when going on rides, either alone or with a group. Make sure to learn and use these hand signals as it's a safer practice. Here's to building a safer biking community!

00:00 So once again, we find ourselves in another scenic location and yes, we are near Nandi
00:11 Hills again, but for something completely different, to discuss the basic hand signals
00:17 to know as a bike rider.
00:19 So welcome to DriveSpark, my name is Vedant Johari and here we have Ghosty.
00:28 So let's take a look at the basic hand signals.
00:37 So Ghosty, tell me about some of the basic hand signals.
00:39 How do you signal to others on the road that you're taking a left turn?
00:43 So all you have to put your left hand like, with the palm like this.
00:47 It's like five, closing your fingers like this.
00:49 So this is for left.
00:50 To signal that you're taking a right turn?
00:52 So same like, same left, you take an L shape like this.
00:56 You are taking a right U turn.
00:59 And what about hazard on the road?
01:02 Hazard, put your leg down.
01:05 So why is all the hand signals and the leg signals that you just showed on the left side
01:10 and not on the right?
01:11 Okay, it's a basic thing.
01:14 All the controls right from the brake and the gas, it's on the right hand side.
01:18 So most of the time, you're equipped on the right hand side.
01:21 So let's say you want to take a right turn and you're putting your hand on right, how
01:25 you will take a right turn?
01:27 Yeah, that's true.
01:28 Right?
01:29 Yes.
01:30 Eventually your engine will get knocked and you will get, that is a possibility to fall
01:33 down.
01:34 Okay.
01:35 See most of the time, your left hand side, your hand or be it the leg, it's completely
01:40 free.
01:41 So okay, so these were just the basic hand signals.
01:43 Now what about when you're going on the road and you want to instruct the other riders
01:48 in the group that we should follow a single file?
01:51 So single file is like pointing your finger like this.
01:54 Okay, so let's move on.
01:55 Yeah, so you're showing a one like this with a point finger, like this in a L shape.
02:00 So you're asking your people like this.
02:02 Okay, and what about if you want to make it a little more even and separate into two lines
02:08 then?
02:09 Same like this, you are showing two fingers like this and the same L shape.
02:13 Right.
02:14 So that everyone can see.
02:15 Yes.
02:16 So okay fine, so let's say you're riding on the highway, you're carrying speed and the
02:21 rider ahead sees a police up ahead.
02:23 How do you signal to the group behind you that there are cops and to slow down or to
02:27 just be a little more safe at that point?
02:29 So if cops are ahead, all you have to do is tap your head like this.
02:35 Not first, just showing like this in the helmet.
02:38 Okay fine.
02:39 So people will come to know, okay there's a cop.
02:41 You have to be cautious, that's it.
02:42 Let's say now we've crossed the police and there's nothing ahead of us, it's just an
02:46 empty straight road and you want to reach your destination a little faster.
02:51 How do you show the group to let's carry a little more speed now?
02:54 Okay, so I would say first wave your hand up and down, up and down.
03:01 That means increase your speed.
03:04 I'm guessing your palm will also have to show upwards for that?
03:07 Yeah, so you're saying, you shouldn't show like this, that means come follow me.
03:13 So we're saying just up and down.
03:16 So that is like, come on guys, speed up, speed up.
03:19 That's what we are saying.
03:20 Okay fine.
03:21 So then if you see an obstacle up ahead and you have to slow down then?
03:24 Okay, same like this, all you have to do is put your, let's see, this is for this right
03:28 hand.
03:29 All you have to do is take an L-shaped bend and put it like this.
03:33 Slow down buddy, slow down, obstacle is coming up, that's what we have to do.
03:38 And then if you want to stop for a break after the ride, how do you signal that to the rest
03:43 of the group?
03:44 So always we used to stop on the left hand side.
03:46 So we used to say, you know, this is a point finger.
03:49 So we used to say, okay, here or here, and to slow down, close your palm like this, the
03:56 entire hand and show like in a L-shape.
03:59 So people will, oh, this guy is going to stop, okay, break time or whatever it is, okay,
04:04 stop signal is passed and we need to stop it.
04:07 So that's the signal.
04:08 So let's say you're leading the group on a long ride and the rider behind you wants to
04:12 come in front.
04:13 So how would you show them that, yeah, okay fine, now is your turn to come in front?
04:18 So nothing, same, this finger is a point finger.
04:21 So I'll say like this, you come front, you come front.
04:26 So nothing is on the right side.
04:28 Yes.
04:29 Everything is on the left.
04:30 So I'm saying you, so I'm showing like this.
04:32 Yes.
04:33 Okay, you come front.
04:34 Okay fine.
04:35 You come front, that's it.
04:37 Okay.
04:38 And now coming to one of the most awaited hand signals, when you see another rider on
04:43 the road, how do you greet them?
04:46 So very simple.
04:47 So when I see a rider, obviously you need to little bit slow down.
04:51 Yes.
04:52 So at that time, I used to take a right hand and this is like you salute another rider.
04:57 So like peace.
04:58 It's kind of a peace and you're like, yeah, you're saying, oh brothers, we are chill brothers,
05:04 we are biking brotherhood.
05:06 Come on man, salute.
05:07 So that's the respect you convey no matter what bike you're having.
05:11 Either it is a 50cc, either it is a 1000cc or whatever it is, little bit of tradition
05:15 or some normal bike.
05:17 You just respect the other rider.
05:19 Always.
05:20 This is the way you respect the other riders.
05:22 Got it.
05:23 So yeah, obviously when you ride on the speed, you say like this, you can't even see.
05:27 So all you have to do is like, take your right hand, put it like this and at the same time,
05:32 those riders will do the right hand.
05:34 So you're just like passing.
05:35 Got it.
05:36 Yes.
05:37 So guys, these were the basic hand signals to know as a rider.
05:41 Always keep these hand signals in mind and teach others around you the basic hand signals.
05:46 Again, it's not going to keep you safe, it's going to keep everyone else safe as well.
05:50 Let's build a safer riding community and spread knowledge to all the biking brothers that
05:54 we have here.
05:55 So this is Vedant Johari and that is Ghosty signing off from DriveSpot.
