Countries like Malaysia and Asean at large should not be forced to see the world and big powers in the Cold War mindset, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a Q&A session at the 30th APEC CEO Summit entitled: "The Global Economy and State of The World,” in San Francisco on Wednesday (Nov 15).

00:00 Please rise and welcome to the stage His Excellency Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia.
00:27 Thank you everyone and thank you Mr. Prime Minister, what a pleasure to see you again.
00:31 Thank you, Dinwi. As we speak the meeting I guess is taking place right now somewhere near San Francisco.
00:40 So
00:41 what do you hope, exact hope, I just put it this way, that this meeting could bring to the
00:48 discussions that we're having right now?
00:50 We talk about inclusivity, we talk about
00:54 globalise and globalisation. We have to accept that
00:58 the
01:01 global situation,
01:03 geopolitics has changed and
01:05 we Malaysia, for example, in the region do acknowledge that
01:09 China has a role and has to be engaged effectively. There must be
01:15 effort, greater effort to ensure that it is
01:19 part of the global community and
01:23 well, there is competition, fair.
01:25 But
01:28 this engagement, for example, between President Biden and Xi Jinping, to me it is
01:34 critical because it should give a clear message that we are here to be able to work together and
01:41 trust each other to resolve
01:44 serious problems, climate
01:49 issues in Ukraine or Gaza. There are too many contentious issues in the world and you must try and engage
01:57 accepting the fact that you may not achieve all the desired results, but this engagement
02:06 is important to try and establish
02:09 areas that we can work together. Countries like Malaysia and ASEAN
02:14 cannot be forced to see the world and their big powers
02:19 in the Cold War mindset.
02:23 United States, for example, has been a traditional ally, has
02:28 done
02:31 immense tasks in the early phase of development. The total, for example, the total
02:37 investments and trade
02:41 with Malaysia
02:44 is
02:46 led by the United States, but things are changing.
02:50 There is increasing trade investment with China. So why then put us in the fix,
02:57 in the zero-sum game?
03:00 For the benefit of countries, emerging economies, and also for the West and the East, I
03:07 believe that the solution is of course greater
03:12 collaboration and
03:14 this Cold War mindset must end because the world in the post-normal times is more chaotic,
03:23 more complex, and full of contradictions. It requires leaders with vision, with commitment, with
03:30 shared ideals to be able to resolve it effectively.
03:34 Thank you.
