00:00 >> All right guys, kick off for questions.
00:02 >> All right, coach, three straight games with a turnover.
00:05 It seems like you guys have kind of turned it up a notch.
00:07 What can you say about your defense?
00:10 >> Really pleased with the way they performed on Sunday.
00:13 I thought they showed poise, they were resilient, they played together,
00:17 they had fun out there, you could see the energy out there.
00:20 So really proud of the way they played and
00:22 they did the main objective, hold them to less points than what our offense scored.
00:26 So that was a positive.
00:27 And then got a chance to attack the ball and got a big time turnover in
00:31 the fourth quarter.
00:32 And all that stuff able to be able to build for this week.
00:35 Again, new week against Miami, but it's starting to build it brick by brick.
00:42 >> The way you closed the game with that turnover,
00:45 I guess how important is that mindset of don't just stop them,
00:48 get the ball, end this game right now?
00:50 And how does that play actually be a good deal?
00:53 >> It's the mindset for most defensive players when they go out there in those
00:56 critical situations, let's go get the ball.
00:59 And it starts with the leadership on defense, Spillane, Max,
01:05 those guys in terms of the leadership there, Epson, Trayvon, those guys right
01:08 there, Peters in terms of let's go get the ball.
01:11 And I'm not down there on the field per se, but
01:13 I know that's something they're talking about.
01:14 So it's always a positive.
01:16 Those guys want those moments in that critical situation.
01:19 >> So coach, you've kind of spoken about wanting those moments.
01:22 The defense has gone nine straight quarters without giving up a touchdown,
01:26 even though they've been put in some bad situations sometimes.
01:29 Can you speak to their mindset in terms of never letting anything face them and
01:32 sticking through and holding them until a field goal?
01:33 >> The next play mentality, you've heard them talk about resetting.
01:41 So whatever the situation is, let's reset and play that play.
01:45 Reset, play that situation, and
01:46 that's the mindset those guys have taken in practice.
01:49 It's the mindset we've taken in the meeting room.
01:51 Okay, one meeting is, okay, we're on early down pass.
01:54 Let's reset, let's go to early down run.
01:56 Let's reset, go to third down and do that.
01:59 Go reset, let's get to red area.
02:01 So that's really the mentality.
02:03 And at this point in the season, really, that's where you have to be as an NFL
02:06 player, so they're just practicing all the time.
02:10 >> You have two defensive linemen who are veterans who have really been stepping up
02:13 in John Jenkins and Adam Butler.
02:14 Can you just continue to talk about what you've seen from them just moving forward
02:18 this season, how they've improved and made the team better as well?
02:20 >> Consistency, consistency, leadership.
02:24 They're both really good leaders on and off the field.
02:26 Consistency in terms of they practice every day.
02:29 They put in the work every day.
02:32 In terms of Jenkins, he does his job.
02:34 He knows his role and he does his job really well.
02:36 He eats up the middle of the defense.
02:39 He gets off of blocks.
02:40 He pushes the middle of the pocket.
02:42 And then in terms of AB, AB does a good job of communicating with the pass rush,
02:47 winning his one on one battle, and then also coordinating the rush.
02:50 So it's all positives there in terms of their consistency and
02:55 the execution of the game plan.
02:57 >> I know Malcolm Coop's last week out of sack when the quarterback fell down,
03:00 he was just kind of in the area.
03:01 To get the one that he got this time, it's been a long time since he got one of those.
03:07 What have you seen from him and where does he continue to improve?
03:11 >> My favorite thing that happened on Sunday for Malcolm was the way that one,
03:17 in terms of how he played the run, his improvement there with the run game,
03:20 which has been getting better and better each week.
03:24 Two, the one rush that he got, the pressure, it wasn't even a sack.
03:28 I mean, a move he's been working since the offseason in terms of just getting to
03:33 the long arm and taking the tackle back, that was probably the most impressive.
03:38 You look at my notes on the computer,
03:39 that was the one that got me most excited right there.
03:42 And the sack is just a byproduct of all the work he's put in.
03:45 So for me, just excited for him.
03:48 I know he's looking forward to the opportunity this week,
03:50 going against Miami, their line in terms of, I know they have some moving parts,
03:54 but they're pretty efficient in terms of running the ball,
03:57 one of the top in the league.
03:59 The quarterback's pretty efficient in getting rid of the ball, so
04:01 we got some challenges there.
04:02 But when you talk to him,
04:04 I'm sure he's gonna be excited about the opportunity this week against Miami.
04:07 >> What are your kind of reactions when you watch a film on Miami's offense?
04:13 >> Fast, explosive, smart.
04:17 Mike, you went to a great school.
04:20 So, but just in terms of what those guys do offensively,
04:24 the bind they put you in, run past conflicts,
04:27 the way they're able to move guys around.
04:30 And just in terms of as an offensive mind who loves to run the football,
04:35 as a defensive coach, you can respect that.
04:37 And you understand the challenges with that.
04:40 And they got a pretty good high level skill.
04:43 They got a lot of very skilled athletes over there on the offensive side of the ball.
04:47 So it's a great challenge.
04:49 >> I know a lot of HN started practicing yesterday.
04:52 He's a guy that was so explosive early in the year.
04:55 Going back and looking at him, what does he do?
04:56 What kind of dimensions does he have in the offense?
04:58 >> True speed, not fast, true speed.
05:02 Whatever you think fast is, he's faster than that.
05:05 So, home run ability right there.
05:08 And to be a young player, to be that explosive, and
05:12 to make the most of his opportunities, it's really impressive to watch on tape.
05:15 And you gotta give credit to the offensive line and the coaching staff there for
05:19 them, how they're scheming up to give him the ball.
05:21 Because a lot of those plays, he's untouched.
05:23 So they're doing a really good job of creating angles for the run game.
05:27 They're doing a good job of, wide receivers do a hell of a job,
05:30 crack blocking and getting in there and getting dirty in terms of the run game.
05:34 So it's good team offense you're seeing there, and
05:36 he's made the most of his opportunities.
05:39 >> Without being like getting too much into scheme,
05:43 you have a player like Tyree Kill of what he could do.
05:45 How do you limit a guy like that?
05:47 >> What is this year, eight for him or seven for him?
05:52 I mean, he's seen everything.
05:53 From people being on top of him, someone playing underneath, double teams,
05:58 trying to get the zone coverage to him, people dogging him,
06:01 just running around the field playing zone outside of him.
06:04 So there's a number of things that people try to do.
06:07 Obviously, sometimes he's been successful, but for
06:10 the most part, he's beaten all that stuff.
06:12 So what we'll try to do is try to do what we think is best for this week.
06:17 We're still in the lab trying to figure out how to limit the effectiveness of
06:23 these guys, but he's seen everything, he's seen everything.
06:26 So we've got to figure something out.
06:28 >> How difficult is the preparation for the motion that they do?
06:32 And obviously, a lot of the motion is trying to get the defense off balance and
06:35 trying to get their eyes in different places and things.
06:36 But I guess how difficult is that adjustment to say, stay in your lane,
06:41 stay with your rules and things like that when they're trying to do all this crazy
06:46 motion?
06:46 >> Well, most teams when they're early down right now in the NFL,
06:50 they're doing a lot of the same motions.
06:51 So we're getting used to seeing that more often.
06:55 Our offense gave it to us all spring, all training camp, in preparation for
07:00 the season.
07:01 So we just gotta abide by our rules and get our eyes in the right place and
07:06 play football.
07:07 >> One more, Zick.
07:07 >> Coach, you were talking about Miami's speed in terms of your defense,
07:11 how good is it to have Devon Diablo back and his speed on the field?
07:14 >> It's always good to have Diablo back.
07:17 And for me, for Diablo, just in terms of one, his leadership,
07:22 his ability to tackle, his physicality in the running game, and
07:25 then the space he covers in the passing games.
07:28 You heard Spillane talk about it in terms of what Diablo did on the play,
07:32 the hold the curl, the buy spill time to get there for the interception.
07:37 It's all tying together.
07:38 Two backers that are getting comfortable working together and
07:41 playing off of each other.
