Independence for IDD Young Adults with Treasure House

  • last year
Treasure House is a supported living residence for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs). Its mission is to provide residents with the same opportunity as all others to lead successful and fulfilling lives.

Treasure House is so much more than a safe and supportive home! Through the nonprofit’s Employment and Life Training Skills program, the Treasure House resident employment rate (75%) soars above the national average for Americans with disabilities (21%). People with the IDDs discover purpose and inclusion when afforded ample opportunity to contribute, and communities are enriched.

This giving season, donate to Treasure House to create bright futures for motivated young adults with IDDs. Plus, Arizonan’s can unlock benefits at tax time when they give to this Qualified Charitable Organization. For more information visit treasurehouse.org

00:00 Supporting those with disabilities is important and that is something Treasure House knows very well.
00:09 Joining me today is Lori Tanner, CEO of Treasure House, to discuss the impact of their programs.
00:14 Welcome, Lori.
00:15 Good morning. How are you?
00:18 I'm well. How are you?
00:20 Oh, terrific.
00:23 Okay, so tell us a little bit about Treasure House because what you guys do is a very unique concept.
00:28 Yeah, thank you. Treasure House is a supported living community for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
00:40 We are here to help them to maximize their independence, to feel a major part of the community, and for them to have the most vibrant lives possible.
00:53 So what is a resident's life like when they're there at Treasure House?
01:01 So we have 29 individual apartments and our residents really, I think what they like the most is the fact that they have friends, they have their own community.
01:12 Secondly, our life coaches work very closely with them to secure employment.
01:16 I'm really proud of our employment numbers. The national average for adults with disabilities is 21% of the national population are employed.
01:26 But at Treasure House we have over 80% of our residents employed and that's why you even kind of see it a little vacant in here this morning is we've been saying goodbye to them as they've been heading off to work this morning.
01:38 Yeah, that's great. They're all headed off to work and they have that independent side of their lives.
01:44 You touched on this just a little bit, but tell us a little bit more about the life coach aspect.
01:52 So our life coaches, we have a two-tiered model. Our community assistants are our 24-hour workforce and help the residents execute their day.
02:00 Our life coaches work very closely. They have a smaller caseload, six or seven residents, work on accommodation goals, short-term and long-term goals.
02:10 What's your dream job? Help them navigate relationships, whether that's friends or romantic relationships and really build on the life skills that's going to maximize independence.
02:22 That's so great. And we touched a little bit on the fact that they have jobs and that they have so much independence.
02:28 They're able to go out and do a lot and have relationships. What about when they're there at Treasure House? What sort of programs do you have in place?
02:38 Well, like I like to say, we have 29 programs. Each program is designed specifically for that residence.
02:46 But we play a lot. We play a lot of card games. We play a lot of board games. Right now, I think our most competitive game is skip-o.
02:54 The staff really get into it. So we have, you know, like a football, see who's going to win this weekend and you get points.
03:03 And we have this really terrific game room, you know, where the residents come and hang out and play.
03:10 And so really, you know, the residents, it's their home. We just work here. And, you know, this is their home and they enjoy every inch of it.
03:19 That's wonderful. And then I know that there is a tax credit available as well.
03:26 Yeah, for the first time, we've been able to secure the charitable tax credit. So a married couple in the community can get $841 tax credit if you donate to Treasure House.
03:39 A single person can donate $421 and it is an immediate tax credit for Arizona.
03:47 So it comes right off the top and it's, you're giving, but you get it back. And then it really, really helps support our programming and the residents.
03:55 That's great. I always want to throw that in when that's an opportunity because that's so great.
03:59 Well, Lori, thank you for showing us a little around Treasure House and telling us about everything that you do there and your amazing residents.
04:06 So if people want to learn more, they can go to treasurehouse.org. Thank you so much.
04:11 Thank you.
