00:51 Just last night, Olivia hit the carpet at the premiere
00:54 and chatted with the Hollywood Reporters, Tiffany Taylor,
00:57 about creating the song
00:58 with the character Lucy Gray in mind.
01:01 - Yeah, I got the opportunity to watch
01:03 a rough cut of the film a few months ago
01:04 and I really fell in love with Lucy Gray
01:07 and her arc and her resilience.
01:09 And so I wanted to write a song that sort of captured that.
01:12 And yeah, it's just such an honor.
01:14 I'm a big fan of all things Hunger Games.

02:07 Telling them she thinks the remix of "A Boys a Liar"
02:10 featuring iSpice as well as the original are crap.

02:16 "I didn't expect that to be my biggest song.
02:19 "I thought on an internet level it was going to be big.

02:25 She also posted to X to clarify even more saying,

02:34 "but the remix made me love it.

03:11 where she told the magazine she has struggled in the past
03:14 to feel like a girls girl.
03:16 She said, "I've never really felt like I could relate
03:18 "to girls very well.
03:20 "I love them so much.
03:21 "I love them as people.
03:22 "I'm attracted to them as people.
03:24 "I'm attracted to them for real.
03:25 "I'm physically attracted to them.
03:27 "But I'm also so intimidated by them
03:29 "and their beauty and their presence."
03:32 She may have pinned the Grammy nominated hit
03:34 "What I Was Made For" that inspired a trend on social media
03:37 celebrating individual experiences with womanhood.
03:40 But Billie says she still struggles
03:42 with her identity as a woman.
03:44 "I've never felt like a woman to be honest with you.
03:46 "I've never felt desirable.
03:48 "I've never felt feminine.
03:49 "I have to convince myself that I'm like a pretty girl.
03:52 "I identify as she/her and things like that.
03:55 "But I've never really felt like a girl."
03:58 We had Lady A in studio and we talk about picking songs
04:01 and going on tour.

04:19 It's so, so cool.
04:21 Tell me a little bit about what went into writing this.
04:23 - Well this one, it's actually a really cool story.
04:25 So we write 80% of our own music.
04:29 And then we learned early on in our career
04:31 that you never say no to a great song,
04:33 whether we write it or not.
04:34 And so this was one that a really good friend of ours
04:36 and co-writer, her name's Emily Wise Band,
04:39 sent this song to Charles.
04:40 - So I called her up and I said,
04:41 "Hey, let's find an hour.
04:42 "I wanna come over, you play Hillary, I'll play me.
04:45 (laughing)
04:46 - Got it.
04:47 - And let's see if this fits before I even send it to them.
04:50 - For sure.
04:51 - So I said, "Sometimes I just like to save some time
04:52 "and just see if something is even in the realm
04:54 "of our world."
04:55 And it just felt so much like us in the minute.
04:57 I sent it to the gang, they were like, "Oh wow."
04:59 I mean, we've had a handful of songs,
05:00 like most of the music that you know from us,
05:02 we've written like "Need You Now," "Run To You,"
05:04 but "American Honey" was one that we didn't write that.
05:06 ♪ Nothing sweeter than summertime ♪
05:11 ♪ And American honey ♪
05:13 - Sometimes you get songs that you feel,
05:15 you're like, "Y'all wrote this for us."
05:17 - Yeah.
05:18 - And it just, that's what it felt like.
05:19 - I was gonna say, it sounds so much like
05:22 your guys' much earlier work.
05:23 It sounds a lot like the "Need You Now" era.
05:26 And I mean that in the greatest way possible.
05:29 How intentional was that, wanting to go back to the roots
05:33 of where you guys started with this song?
05:34 - Well, I really think it is a part of just
05:38 where we are right now as a band
05:40 and with the tour that we've been on.
05:41 You know, the Request Line tour,
05:43 the whole concept of this tour and this music
05:46 is really wanting to give the fans what they want.
05:49 They send us DMs, they call in and leave us voicemails
05:52 of songs they want us to play live.
05:54 We really want to give our fans
05:57 what they want to hear from us.
05:59 And they're the songs that we love to sing together.
06:02 So it really kind of works out.

06:20 It's been 15 years since you put out your debut album.
06:24 I feel very old hearing that.

06:36 - What does that mean for you
06:37 to have had this longevity in the industry?
06:40 - I just got goosebumps when you said that.
06:42 We feel it really deeply.
06:44 We are so grateful.
06:46 I mean, there are so many times we look at each other
06:49 over these last five years specifically,
06:51 and we're like, man, we're still here,
06:54 and we love doing this together,
06:55 and we are still excited about the music
06:58 and getting it to the fans and performing live.
07:00 And it hasn't felt that long in a lot of ways.
07:03 I mean, it feels like such a blink.
07:06 But then at the same time,
07:07 when we sit down with you and have these conversations
07:09 and we think about all of these things
07:11 that we've been a part of and experienced,
07:13 now for us, it's how do we pay that forward
07:16 and then also continue to dig in creatively
07:19 and make art that we're proud of and that connects.

07:57 including this year's five star,
07:59 which spent one week at number one.
08:01 - Now being the creators of our own music,
08:04 getting first place on the charts is very, very meaningful.
08:07 - The K-pop group is the finalist in two BBMA categories,
08:11 including Top Global K-pop Artist
08:13 and Top K-pop Album for five star.
