00:00 - Please raise your hands for questions.
00:02 Coach.
00:03 - Yeah, just first of all,
00:04 just obviously excited to get our first win last weekend
00:09 down in Houston.
00:10 Guys played great.
00:11 Our most complete game this season in all three aspects.
00:15 And, you know, it's obviously, you know,
00:18 been a long time coming to get our first Big 12 win.
00:22 You know, been very close
00:23 and a lot of opportunities this year
00:25 and just hadn't come through for many reasons,
00:27 but we did this week.
00:29 And I think it just shows our guys continuing to fight,
00:31 continue to put the time and effort and work in
00:33 and trying to get better.
00:35 You know, we've had still,
00:36 we're having guys having their best games
00:39 this late in the season, which is awesome.
00:41 And, you know, we certainly want to continue that
00:43 as we move forward this week,
00:46 you know, going to West Virginia.
00:47 We, you know, we came back Sunday.
00:52 I thought we did, you know,
00:52 had a great meeting and had another good practice on Sunday
00:55 and, you know, been game planning today.
00:57 We looked excited to get back on the practice field.
00:59 You know, several things we did great that we talked about.
01:03 I think turnover margin was the biggest key.
01:06 We created three.
01:07 I guess we had one, but offensively we didn't turn it over.
01:11 You know, I thought defensively, outstanding game.
01:14 I think, you know, Coach Brown and his staff
01:17 had did a great job really containing the pass game,
01:20 which they really wanted to do.
01:22 You know, our team, I think they held,
01:23 we held them to 102 yards in the passing game,
01:25 which was outstanding with three interceptions.
01:28 One of the things that's kind of been our nemesis,
01:29 giving up some big plays in the throw game.
01:32 Our guys did a great job with that.
01:33 We didn't really give up those big plays
01:35 in the passing game and obviously tried to make them
01:38 drive the ball and they created some mistakes for them.
01:40 And, you know, so really proud of that.
01:42 And, you know, we included,
01:43 we started two freshmen at corner, you know, for the game.
01:46 And the guys played well, you know,
01:48 really the thing we gave up was the Q runs, I thought,
01:51 but other than that, you know,
01:52 really shut them down really all night long.
01:55 So that was great.
01:57 Quarterback game was very efficient.
01:59 I mean, Emory, most efficient game, 13 for 16.
02:01 In that regard, I thought he'd played a really good game.
02:06 Lichten came in and played well.
02:07 Also, both of those guys gave us a great chance.
02:10 And then I think, you know,
02:11 Corey's been very, very consistent this year.
02:13 You know, one of our more consistent players.
02:15 Went over a hundred yards again.
02:17 He's 115 shy of a thousand.
02:19 So, you know, obviously we'd love to hit that,
02:21 hit that mark for him.
02:23 I think our offensive line take pride in that,
02:24 our tight ends, of course the running backs, you know,
02:28 being able to get to that milestone, you know,
02:31 so something certainly to strive for.
02:33 You give credit to our guys up front.
02:35 I mean, you know, Luke Kandra,
02:36 I think he's really had an outstanding year this season
02:39 at right guard, DT at left guard.
02:41 Both of those guys have really been very,
02:43 very solid up front.
02:44 I'm kind of the mainstay to help us get into
02:46 all these rushing yards, you know,
02:48 and total yards for that matter of fact as well.
02:51 So, but yeah, I mean,
02:53 just excited about the opportunity again
02:55 to come play again this next week.
02:57 You know, we're going to play West Virginia.
02:59 I think Neil, I obviously know Neil from our time at Troy
03:02 and our time at App State.
03:04 I think he does an outstanding job.
03:06 You know, their team started out hot at four and one.
03:09 They do have six wins to this point.
03:12 And, you know, I think their strength of their team,
03:16 I think it's offensive line.
03:17 I think those guys are really good up front.
03:19 They're one of the top rushing teams
03:20 in the country this year.
03:22 Have two really good backs, one really big back,
03:25 and then another freshman that's really shown
03:28 some really good stuff this year.
03:30 You know, very good, solid wide receivers.
03:32 And then their quarterback, man, he plays extremely hard.
03:35 Every time you turn the TV on,
03:37 if you watch West Virginia,
03:38 anytime you see him running around making plays,
03:41 you know, very feisty player.
03:43 I love the way he plays as far as that goes.
03:46 You know, and then defensively, you know,
03:48 very solid defense and, you know,
03:50 I think, you know, really good football team.
03:52 You know, they didn't play their best game last week
03:54 against Oklahoma,
03:55 but I think Oklahoma maybe played their best game.
03:57 Dillian Gabriel played at a high level last week.
03:59 And, you know, so as a, you know,
04:01 score indicated that if you looked at the score.
04:03 So it'll be senior day for them.
04:06 We know they want to get that taste out of their mouth.
04:09 So we know we'll get their best shot, you know,
04:11 but I think, you know, obviously, you know,
04:13 we're talking about West Virginia, you know,
04:15 a team that Cincinnati in the past has a history with
04:18 that have played a lot of ball against West Virginia.
04:21 We have not done very well, according to the stats here,
04:24 you know, playing West Virginia,
04:26 but I do think this will be a natural rivalry
04:30 as we move forward into Big 12,
04:31 a team certainly very close to us
04:34 on this side on the East Coast.
04:35 And, you know, so I think both fan bases and both programs,
04:39 this is going to be a great game
04:41 that we'll be playing each and every year.
04:43 - Last week, you talked about a passionate team meeting
04:47 on Sunday.
04:48 Did you maybe get a sense throughout the week
04:50 that that meeting kind of sparked something
04:54 'cause it looked like a lot of fire, a lot of energy,
04:58 not that you guys lacked it,
04:59 but it looked like they were together.
05:01 - Well, I mean, I just think we're, you know,
05:03 it was a team we're continuing to build
05:05 and come together, you know,
05:08 and start playing for each other and playing as one.
05:11 I think you saw that Saturday, really, for the first time
05:15 for the guys, they were doing that
05:17 and playing complimentary football,
05:19 which we really haven't done.
05:20 We played disciplined football,
05:22 which we haven't done most of the time this year.
05:25 We've been really good in spurts on all three phases,
05:28 like really good, and then also not very good at all,
05:31 but we really put it together, I thought, in this game.
05:34 You know, the first drive,
05:35 I mean, it was an outstanding drive by the offense.
05:37 We were 11 play drive, very efficient,
05:39 went right down the field, scored,
05:40 and then the defense goes back out and they stop them.
05:43 You know, it's just, it felt like, okay, you know,
05:46 early in the game, we got to go,
05:47 we're going to get control of this game.
05:49 And we did that, and then,
05:50 well, we haven't been great coming out of halftime.
05:52 We came out of halftime, first play, interception.
05:54 You know, we go down and we get a field goal.
05:56 So now we're up 10.
05:57 So you're up two scores.
05:58 And, you know, our guys really didn't look back from there.
06:00 We just kept playing hard, kept playing,
06:02 you know, moving forward with it, you know, but it was,
06:05 it was a complete game.
06:06 And, you know, you could just sense it throughout the week.
06:08 I mean, very, the guys went out and practiced hard.
06:10 They've practiced hard all year, really,
06:12 but I just thought it was a more,
06:14 a more sense of urgency, man.
06:16 We got to go get this win, you know,
06:18 whatever it takes to get this win.
06:19 That's what we have to do.
06:20 You know, put everything else aside.
06:22 Let's focus on everything we have to go out
06:24 and get this win.
06:25 And the guys were really, you can see it on the field.
06:27 It's really focused and intentional
06:28 and everything that they were doing out there Saturday night.
06:31 - What's the difference in the Corey Kiner
06:32 that you saw maybe on tape when you got here
06:35 and the guy that you're seeing now
06:37 that's 115 away from a thousand?
06:39 - You know, I think, I think very similar, really.
06:42 I mean, I, you know, I don't,
06:43 I didn't really study how many carries he had last year
06:45 and all that, no, over his career, but, you know,
06:49 he's always been a powerful runner, you know,
06:51 he's very, very strong and he,
06:53 he breaks a lot of tackles.
06:54 And I think this year, you know, he's just kind of,
06:58 you know, as we started the season, guys,
06:59 remember we, you know,
07:00 we didn't know who really was going to be the back.
07:02 You know, we were kind of backed by committee.
07:03 We're a lot, and we've kind of been that way.
07:05 So, cause it takes several guys,
07:06 but he's kind of been the most consistent guy
07:08 to show up week in and week out.
07:11 He's gotten opportunities to be able to make plays.
07:13 You know, I think, I think he's,
07:17 I think he's shown maybe he's got better vision,
07:19 maybe than I thought, you know,
07:20 as we first started this,
07:21 because he is, he's able to hit those holes.
07:24 And, you know, and for a guy, he's not a burner.
07:26 We all know that, but man,
07:28 he's got some long runs this season, you know,
07:30 and including one Saturday, I mean, we're backed up
07:32 and he breaks off, I think a 62 yarder, you know,
07:35 so some really, you know,
07:37 really big runs throughout this season.
07:39 But I think more than anything,
07:40 he's just a hard, tough runner
07:43 that's going to get those first downs,
07:44 going to turn out those tough yards that you need,
07:47 you know, just, I mean, on the sideline,
07:48 we're talking like, man, they got an extra,
07:50 I got an extra guy here, but Corey just,
07:51 he runs through them a lot of times, you know,
07:53 when he gets those yards and that's credit to him,
07:56 you know, and he's a guy who, you know,
07:57 each Sunday and Monday and Tuesday,
07:59 he's in the training room,
08:00 he's living in there because of the hits
08:02 that he takes on Saturdays.
08:03 He does a great job of getting his body prepared
08:06 for the next week and thus he's able to come back
08:09 each and every week and be that consistent back
08:11 that we want.
08:12 - You mentioned the two freshmen that you started at corner
08:15 and then Jordan Young comes in
08:16 and he's arguably the MVP of the defense for the game.
08:19 What was the motivation behind not starting Jordan?
08:22 Was that kind of your way to challenge him
08:23 to try to pick it up a little bit maybe?
08:26 - You know, we talked about being disciplined
08:29 and doing the things that, in order to be disciplined
08:31 and, you know, and he was undisciplined early in the week.
08:34 And so we was like, listen, you know,
08:36 Raekwon's going to start, you know,
08:38 until you get your mind right,
08:40 that you're going to be a decent player
08:41 and do the right things.
08:42 And I'm talking on and off the field.
08:44 And when you do that, then you're going to play better.
08:47 And I think that was really send a message and it did.
08:50 I thought he went out and played very well
08:52 once he got his opportunity to get back in the game.
08:54 - Seems like this offense has played better
08:56 the past couple of weeks with Ryan Montgomery being healthy.
08:59 How much of a difference does he make out there
09:02 in terms of what you want to do offensively?
09:04 - Yeah, I'm glad you brought up Ryan.
09:05 He's a guy, you know, I think he missed five weeks maybe
09:08 in the middle of the season.
09:10 You know what he brings to just a level of poise
09:13 at the running back position,
09:14 because he can do all three things.
09:16 You know, he can catch the ball in the backfield
09:18 as we saw in the first touchdown.
09:20 You know, he can protect, but he also can run.
09:22 And he's got really good vision as well.
09:25 You know, it's been awesome to have him available and back.
09:28 You know, we didn't even know if he was going to be back
09:29 this past week as well.
09:30 You know, he's still dealing with some injuries.
09:33 He was kind of a game time, you know,
09:35 decision whether we're going to play him or not.
09:36 He was able to go and man, I'm glad he did.
09:38 I'm glad he was able to go because, you know,
09:41 he certainly gives us that extra,
09:43 that piece out of the backfield catching the ball.
09:46 I think that's probably his main strength,
09:47 but also in punt returning, we put him back there for that.
09:49 And so he's a very talented player
09:52 that's had to deal with some injuries
09:53 throughout his tenure here,
09:54 but it's nice to be able to have him out there.
09:57 It takes a little bit of the pressure off of Corey
09:59 and some of those other running backs as well.
10:01 - Do you look at the results of a day like Saturday
10:05 around this league and just kind of shake your head
10:07 because nobody has any clue what's going to happen
10:10 Saturday to Saturday?
10:11 - I think we, I mean, it's been like that all season.
10:14 It's, you know, we're dealing with a lot of parity
10:19 in college football, I think,
10:21 but particularly in the big 12, you know,
10:23 when you're starting to play all these games
10:25 and we've been saying this week in and week out,
10:26 we're kind of, you know,
10:27 everybody's kind of beating each other.
10:30 You know, I think, how many is it?
10:31 Five teams that are in second place right now, you know,
10:34 and then, you know, at the bottom,
10:37 there's five teams with, they have two wins, you know?
10:39 So, I mean, it's like, it's so much parity in this league
10:42 that I think anybody can beat anybody.
10:44 Whoever shows up with the, you know,
10:47 great game plan, with the, with inspired players,
10:51 you know, we're dealing with, you know,
10:53 18 to 23 year olds each and every week.
10:56 I think match-ups play a big part in this.
10:58 You know, people don't really talk about match-ups,
11:00 but that, there's certainly something to speak of with that,
11:04 whether you're playing a home or away,
11:06 what's the weather like?
11:07 There's a lot of, there's a lot of things that happen.
11:08 And also, momentum.
11:10 I think, you know, like Central Florida this weekend,
11:12 I mean, they started, got a touchdown,
11:14 and then, you know, Oklahoma State's running back fumbles.
11:16 Next thing you know, another touchdown.
11:17 They just got that momentum, never gave it up.
11:19 You know, I thought the same thing
11:21 in the Oklahoma-West Virginia game,
11:22 as you're watching it, you know,
11:23 Oklahoma just started rolling.
11:25 And next thing you know, the score's, you know,
11:27 kind of lopsided.
11:28 It's, it's hard sometimes to stop the momentum, I think,
11:31 you know, when teams grab it and go with it.
11:34 - Is it different, the challenge of being in a league
11:37 without a top dog?
11:38 I mean, Clemson and the ACC was there forever.
11:41 - I mean, I mean, I, I mean, I think it's good,
11:44 because you always have a chance.
11:46 You feel like every game you're going into,
11:48 man, if we got a great plan,
11:49 and our guys go play hard and execute,
11:50 then we got a great chance to win this game.
11:52 And, which I think that's great, you know?
11:55 I don't, you know, it's, I don't think it's as good a,
11:58 you know, as fun for everybody if you go in,
12:00 and you're, you know, a 25-point underdog,
12:02 you know, going into a game,
12:03 you maybe not have a chance.
12:04 But in this league, I think everybody has a chance.
12:06 And, you know, also the tough thing is, you know,
12:09 and you're playing nine games now in this league,
12:12 you know, you know, as opposed to having
12:14 the four non-conference that some of the other leagues
12:16 still have, you know, so that makes it more difficult too,
12:19 because each and every week you're seeing these opponents,
12:21 and, you know, it makes it more difficult
12:23 to try to win, win a lot of these games.
12:25 - Frazier versus Corleone sounds like
12:27 a great heavyweight fight.
12:29 The other guys aren't too bad around them.
12:31 I mean, it looks like a game to watch in the trenches there.
12:35 - Yeah, absolutely.
12:35 You know, again, I mentioned this earlier,
12:37 I think the strength is their offensive line.
12:40 And of course, Frazier's the anchor of that offensive line
12:42 at West Virginia, one of the best centers in the country.
12:45 You know, he does an outstanding job,
12:47 and strong, plays with great balance,
12:51 and, you know, always seems to be in great position.
12:54 You know, of course, Corleone and the guys up front,
12:57 I think, do an outstanding job with our D-line,
12:59 and, you know, that will be one.
13:02 If you like watching the guys,
13:03 and the big guys up front,
13:05 that's gonna be the matchup to watch, for sure.
13:07 - Maybe not necessarily related,
13:13 but you know how crazy your profession is.
13:16 What do you think of a game where there's a 51 to 10,
13:21 the guy that scored 51 gets fired and gets 75 million,
13:24 and the guy that scored 10 gets whacked after 10 games.
13:28 Did you ever see it coming to this years ago,
13:31 when you decided to be a football coach?
13:33 - No, I mean, you know,
13:34 when you're thinking about being a coach,
13:35 you don't really think about getting fired.
13:37 I mean, the negative piece of it.
13:39 You're doing it 'cause you love the sport,
13:40 you love the camaraderie, and all those things.
13:43 And I think, you know, obviously,
13:45 and too, when I got into coaching back in the late '90s,
13:48 I mean, it wasn't the kind of money that's involved now.
13:52 And I think when you start, you know,
13:54 are you dealing with the big time money,
13:56 and all that stuff, then crazy things are going to happen.
13:59 And that's what we're seeing happening,
14:02 year in and year out.
14:03 And then here's the other thing, you know,
14:05 because I don't think, it's not healthy for our sport
14:07 to see firings before the season's over.
14:10 I don't like it, I don't think it's healthy for the sport.
14:13 I mean, we always talk about, hey,
14:15 we're doing all this for the student athletes.
14:17 Well, you're not really, you know,
14:18 if this is what's happening,
14:20 because you're not even giving those guys a chance
14:22 to finish the season.
14:23 But then, but I know why they're doing it,
14:25 because of the rules we've created now,
14:26 with the transfer portal,
14:28 with early signing period in December.
14:30 So everybody's signing their high school players early.
14:32 You know, if you don't make a change,
14:34 or a move, and try to hire somebody early December,
14:36 you don't have no chance to be able to sign any players.
14:39 So I get why they're doing that, but it's,
14:41 you know, it's crazy.
14:44 You know, it's, you know,
14:46 the kind of money that, the payout there.
14:48 I mean, you got, I mean,
14:50 what kind of coach do you have to be,
14:51 if somebody wants to pay you that much money not to coach?
14:54 You know, it's crazy, you know?
14:57 And then, you know,
14:58 the other thing that was other side of this,
14:59 is so many of these guys that are hired
15:01 at these big time universities,
15:03 that are going to be the savior for these programs,
15:05 and they get hired, and then five years later,
15:07 their record's the same or worse than the one
15:09 that they got rid of before.
15:11 You know, what are we doing?
15:13 You know, so it's a crazy profession.
15:16 There's no question about it.
15:17 It's, but it's more popular than ever.
15:21 Everybody loves it.
15:22 You know, everybody loves watching college football.
15:24 I think for many, many reasons,
15:26 but it is a great sport, and that's why we do it.
15:30 It's why we coach, it's why we play,
15:31 and that's why we watch it.
15:32 - Somebody gave you 75 million to go away.
15:35 Will we ever see you again?
15:37 - You'd probably see me, yeah.
15:38 But I mean, probably not coaching.
15:39 I'd probably be just hanging out, you know,
15:41 letting somebody else worry about all this stuff.
15:43 But it's, I don't know, that's crazy.
15:46 You know, that's a crazy deal.
15:47 And, you know, and it, you know,
15:51 in a way it's kind of sad too.
15:52 It's, you know, it's like Coach Fisher,
15:55 I mean, obviously he's a really good coach,
15:56 and won national championship and several,
15:59 and for somebody to say, hey, you're not doing a good enough
16:03 job, we're going to pay you that much money to leave.
16:05 That is, this is crazy world we're living in.
16:07 - Obviously basketball season's here,
16:10 and Coach Miller's dealing with a situation
16:12 where he has two players who can't play
16:14 with the two-time transfer roles.
16:15 You talked about your displeasure with the transfer roles.
16:18 What's kind of your opinion on that situation
16:20 and kind of how the NCAA has handled it?
16:22 - You know, I really haven't looked too much into that.
16:27 I know this, for us, and when we're looking at,
16:30 if we're looking to get any kind of transfers,
16:33 and this has really been the last couple years,
16:35 that we're not looking to get guys that have already
16:38 transferred once, unless they're graduated, you know,
16:41 because they, you know, the rules state that if you're,
16:43 you know, if you've already graduated,
16:44 if you already transferred one time,
16:46 you can't transfer again.
16:47 And, you know, unless there's some waiver, you know,
16:49 and we've all seen where, and I've heard,
16:51 man, most of these waivers are not getting passed.
16:53 And so I don't want to take the chance in football.
16:55 And I know every situation is different.
16:58 We saw what happened at North Carolina this past season,
17:01 or this year, you know, and I think they've, you know,
17:03 changed that halfway into the season
17:05 with that particular situation.
17:06 But, you know, I think either there's going to be,
17:11 is there going to be waivers or not, to me,
17:13 is what needs to happen.
17:14 So it's really, it needs to be black and white
17:16 and have some more clarity about it
17:18 so everybody knows what's happening
17:19 and so you don't have this people that are in, you know,
17:22 in between trying to figure out what's going to happen
17:24 and what's going on.
17:25 You know, it's unfortunate, you know,
17:28 I think what these, both of these players that came in,
17:30 hopefully anticipating to play, you know,
17:32 now they're not being able to play.
17:33 So it's going to be interesting to see how this pans out
17:36 and, you know, hopefully they'll be able to play, you know,
17:38 but certainly that's not, you know,
17:41 NCAA has made their stance
17:42 and now maybe it's going a different direction,
17:44 but, you know, we'll see what ends up happening.
17:46 But I mean, you know, I think if guys are transferring,
17:50 they're transferring to play, you know,
17:52 we should let them play, you know,
17:54 but also they need to have some clear rules.
17:56 - Thank you, Coach.
17:58 - All right, thanks guys.
