00:00 The cost of living is not an abstract phenomenon.
00:04 It is a reality experienced by households,
00:08 which can be addressed through practical action
00:11 and effective measures.
00:14 One of the most salient interventions
00:16 in addressing the high cost of living
00:18 is the strategy to support agricultural production
00:22 throughout the sector, ranging from food and cash crops
00:28 as well as livestock value chains.
00:32 I am committed to put the shame of hunger behind us
00:36 once and for all.
00:38 We rolled out a countrywide farmer registration
00:42 and fertilizer subsidy program that
00:44 has made available 5.5 million bags to farmers across Kenya.
00:51 We have progressively reduced the cost of fertilizer
00:54 from 6,500 to 2,500, increased maize acreage and production
01:02 by an extra 200,000 acres this year,
01:06 and enhanced maize production by an additional 18 million bags
01:12 this year.
01:14 As a result of these interventions,
01:18 today a two kilogram packet of maize flour
01:22 is selling at a low of 145 and a high of 175,
01:27 depending on the brand you buy, down from 250 shillings
01:36 a few months ago.
01:38 The famous gorogoro of maize is selling at between 60 and 75.
01:45 Honorable members, you know how much
01:47 it costed a few months ago.
01:49 We have also established 22 new fish landing sites
01:55 in nine counties in Nyanza and the coast region.
01:59 We have funded and organized beach management units
02:03 into cooperatives, set up two hatcheries in Kabonyo
02:08 in Kisumu County and in Shimoni in Kwale County.
02:12 And we are in the process of completing
02:15 Liwatoni fish processing plant in Mombasa
02:19 by end of next month and Shimoni fish port
02:23 by the end of next year.
02:25 Again, to bring our blue economy resources
02:29 into the realm of food production.
