NE Youth hosted their projects with pride awards where they celebrate the work with young people across the region. Youth work has a huge impact on young people in the north east and that is recognised at the awards. We attended the awards and spoke to young people attending.

00:00 We're here to celebrate and recognise young people's achievements, the event's called
00:06 Projects of Pride. It's our awards night for young people and youth workers and trustees.
00:12 So it provides us with an opportunity to say thank you and well done to the incredible
00:17 young people that we work with, that our member organisations work with, to get them on stage
00:24 and really reward and recognise their achievements.
00:28 Many young people travel from across the region to attend the Projects with Pride awards in
00:32 Newcastle. The young people are involved throughout the whole process from planning to even presenting
00:37 and performing on the night. And of course they were nominated for so many awards.
00:43 So we've come with Durham Area Youth, we're both up for awards, I'm up for most improved
00:48 of the year. I'm up for young volunteer of the year. We've got a few, we're up for a
00:55 few awards, like is the charity we're up for. Social action of the year for the I Will Project
01:01 as well.
01:03 Throughout the night as the young people took to the stage to collect their awards and perform,
01:08 it really made you think about the impact that youth work is having on those young people
01:12 across the region. Whether it be supporting them to grow their confidence or to help them
01:17 with what they need at that time.
01:20 Very because youth has changed me a lot in these past years I've been going. I feel much
01:25 more confident with myself in everything I do. Very important to me.
01:29 I've definitely been given a lot more opportunities that I wouldn't have been given unless I was
01:33 at youth club because we've been doing work with KeyFund and going on trips and stuff
01:38 and it's been just a really lovely experience.
01:42 I think it's so important that young people have a safe space to come to, especially with
01:47 the darker nights coming on, they don't get as much support now. So I think knowing that
01:52 there's people there who can give support to youth.
01:56 Yeah I think with all of the social media and all the new technologies there's a lot
02:00 more issues for young people. They do need that space so that they can get that support
02:06 from youth workers. Because we're not teachers, we're not their parents, we're not police.
02:12 We're there for them and their journey.
02:16 Yeah because it helps to make a difference in communities and help people who need help.
02:22 It's a good way to get kids off the street and stop loads of kids causing trouble so
02:28 they've got somewhere to go.
02:29 Again it's what youth work's all about. Building them up to the point where they can do this
02:34 and they're capable of doing this. It's amazing for me now, put all the work in, step back
02:38 and off they go and they do it all themselves. They're going to be absolutely amazing. It's
02:42 amazing as well from last year to this year having new faces, new young people performing
02:46 and like you said they have a young group presenting. It's just going to be youth led
02:49 and it's what it's all about.
02:52 Of course any youth and all the other youth organisations across the North East will continue
02:57 their work with young people to have a big impact on their lives.
