00:00 On a riverbank in Kempsey, tactical officers moved in on two men they believed were armed
00:07 and dangerous.
00:08 After more than 10 hours on the run, the pair were taken down by heavily armed police.
00:14 It's alleged they terrorised drivers along the M1 motorway from the early hours of the
00:19 morning, firing a gun at random out of the window of this dual cab ute.
00:24 But no firearms were found on them.
00:26 Part of our investigation will retrace where they've been and continue to search for those
00:31 weapons.
00:32 The rampage began in Coopernook around 1.30am where a bullet grazed a driver's arm.
00:37 And then more than 60km away, shots were fired at another vehicle, before a third car was
00:43 targeted shortly after.
00:45 Then just outside Port Macquarie, police were fired upon as they tried to pull the car over.
00:51 A man's body was later found lying on the side of a road nearby.
00:55 Police believe it could be linked.
00:57 That is one very strong line of inquiry that they are all linked together.
01:00 The Mercedes was abandoned in this Port Macquarie park, but there was no sign of the two men
01:06 or the weapons.
01:07 It sparked a full-scale manhunt across Port Macquarie, sending nine local schools into
01:12 lockdown and terrifying the local community.
01:16 They were told to stay inside and lock their doors.
01:19 I've lived here for 22 years and never ever remotely have we had anything like this before.
01:26 You'd never think anything happens in a town like this, but it is kind of concerning and
01:30 a bit scary.
01:31 Police from across the state swarmed the area searching for any sign of the fugitives, while
01:36 police aircraft hunted from above.
01:38 It shows that NSW Police first and foremost look after the safety of the public and today
01:44 we made sure that the resources were in place to bring this operation to a successful outcome.
01:50 Police believe the alleged victims of the shootings were all chosen at random and had
01:54 no connection to the two men.
01:56 They say they're not looking for any other suspects.
01:59 The two men, aged 26 and 32, were taken to Kempsey Police Station where they're expected
02:04 to be charged.
