Goulburn businesswoman Chloe Hurley speaks at Goulburn Mulwaree rate rise protest.
Transcript
00:00 against these ridiculous and unsustainable rate rises after receiving the letter in the mail,
00:05 which was quite shocking to me and I'm sure many others. We need the Feldenwari Council to drop
00:12 this application as our community just cannot afford Council's proposal for 51.2%. It's just
00:20 pretty crazy stuff. And the underhanded approach Council has taken with this,
00:28 as many others have mentioned, is really arrogant. This application is just showing
00:34 the high condition of our community and an attempt to circumvent the requirements set by IPAR
00:40 for community consultation and support on process development.
00:44 Now, when I first got it I put up a post on Facebook and got a lot of feedback, as probably
00:52 many of you may have seen, just saying, "What on earth?" The letters, so look, just two of the
01:00 things. Firstly, the letters informing the residents, as many people mentioned,
01:03 of the community dropping sessions were received after four of them had already been held,
01:08 which is just either complete incompetence or, like everyone's saying, arrogance.
01:14 All of the community dropping sessions were scheduled during business hours,
01:19 when the vast majority of people would be at work and unable to attend. At the time,
01:25 cost of living has increased to a breaking point with fuel costs at record highs,
01:34 interest rates five times higher for us than two years ago, electricity bills skyrocketing,
01:39 food prices rising 7.5% just in the last year. We just can't sustain this 51% over the next year.
