00:00 To me, these two games against winnable opponents, and I say winnable with quotation marks, if
00:05 they can start off, reason for optimism, another reason why is they're getting their two all
00:09 pros back.
00:11 Where Kyle is basically, has a track record with either of them go down, the offense isn't
00:18 as very good or as creative.
00:20 - Yeah, let's talk about those reinforcements.
00:22 So Trent Williams coming back, Deebo Samuel coming back, maybe a week for Christian McCaffrey
00:27 to get healthier.
00:28 Aaron Banks is gonna miss a little time, and that's a significant loss, but Randy Gregory's
00:34 getting more acclimated to the system, and now Chase Young is here, and Washington didn't
00:41 want him, but he's gonna be playing with Nick Bosa, who signed off on him, and people think
00:45 Nick Bosa's gonna bring the best out of him.
00:50 How much does this change the Niners' fortunes going forward, these reinforcements coming
00:54 back?
00:55 - I think it helps them immensely if they can get their coverage to match what they're
00:59 doing, and I think it helps immensely that they've done this before, I think they just
01:04 need to go back to the basics and remember what they used to do prior, and I think Wilkes
01:09 needs to come on the sideline, and I think Wilkes is a pretty good teacher from what
01:12 I can tell, and I think he would benefit from that as well, and I think at the end of the
01:18 day, the overall line message should be, keep it simple, it's not broke.
01:24 Ironically, Grant, defenses are doing to the 49ers what the 49ers defense do to other teams,
01:32 right?
01:33 They tackle, they don't let them get yards after the catch, and frankly, they wait for
01:37 them to make a mistake, and the 49ers have been doing that on offense, they've been giving
01:42 the ball over, much like the defense was doing prior to this.
01:47 I think keeping it simple, relying on your playmakers, they should be fine, and I think
01:52 having Debo back will help Kyle do one thing to prevent those five-man things, screens,
01:58 right?
01:59 I'm not really sure why no one else on the 49ers can run a screen other than Debo, but
02:03 apparently that's the case, because when he leaves, that whole outside screen game goes
02:07 away.
02:09 It's not there anymore.
02:10 No, it's gone.
02:11 Debo is so important in this offense because he just makes it so easy when he's doing his
02:16 thing.
02:17 It feels like if he could come back and give them what he gave them two years ago, remember,
02:20 they were two and four, they went to Chicago, they were losing at halftime?
02:27 They were about to be two and five.
02:29 That was about to be the end, and all of a sudden, he just went crazy.
02:32 He had an 80-yard screen.
02:35 He just took over the whole game, took over the whole season.
02:39 He has the capability.
02:41 Christian McCaffrey's already given his all.
02:43 George Kittle's given his all.
02:45 Brandon Aiyu, given his all.
02:47 Debo, if you could join the party, stay healthy, and sort of turn back the clock two years
02:53 ago, man, this team just might win the Super Bowl.
02:56 I think so much depends on Debo.
03:00 I would want to push back on anyone who ever says that Brandon Aiyu is better than Debo
03:04 or has gone up, is that I have seen Debo can take over a game, and Brandon had an opportunity
03:15 to take over games with Debo gone, and he didn't.
03:19 He didn't.
03:20 That's true.
03:21 Debo can also disappear for like a season and a half.
03:25 This is true.
03:26 This is true.
03:27 You know what I'm saying?
03:28 At least Brandon Aiyu is consistent in his good, not greatness.
03:32 Debo can be great.
03:33 Debo can also be like, "What the hell happened to you?"
03:35 It's extremes.
03:36 I get it.
03:37 I get it.
03:38 Yes, I agree.
03:41 I also feel that some of the things that Brock can get away with happens because Debo's on
03:48 the field, and now that he's not, he can't get away with it.
03:54 One thing I will say for reason for optimism- I was disappointed in Aiyu the last few weeks,
03:57 man.
03:58 He had some catches, some drops.
03:59 You're going to get that field goal if you didn't hit him right in the face at halftime.
04:03 If you're an elite wide receiver, you make those catches, you take over those games,
04:08 like yeah, I'm with you.
04:10 He's not an elite wide receiver.
04:11 I don't know that Debo is either.
04:12 He can be an elite playmaker, but I don't think he's been an elite playmaker in a couple
04:15 of years.
04:16 If he could do that, that'd be great.
04:17 Because he has that gear, and Aiyu doesn't, to your point.
04:21 Correct.
04:22 I think part of the team- remember, guys, the team was centered around their playmakers
04:31 and some Joe Schmo throwing the ball.
04:34 Now we're going to pretend like Brock is the issue when the other components aren't living
04:40 up to their bargain as well.
04:41 I think it's a systematic thing that needs to get fixed, from the defense to the offense.
04:49 Optimism, I will say that there's a lot of good teams right now where their quarterback
04:55 is leading the league or is up there.
04:58 Philadelphia.
04:59 Hertz has more interceptions than Brock Purdy.
05:02 I live in western New York, Bill's country.
05:06 Josh Allen has more interceptions than Brock Purdy.
05:08 I think at the end of the day, everyone just needs to realize that he's learned when to
05:15 do it and when not to.
05:17 Let's just be honest.
05:18 He's like a stock, Purdy, that went from penny stock to- I don't know.
05:25 I don't do this kind of stuff.
05:27 He's Bitcoin.
05:28 I'll go Bitcoin.
05:29 Yeah, he's Bitcoin.
05:30 All of a sudden, it just takes off, and people are like, "Is this real?
05:33 Is this real?"
05:34 All of a sudden, it goes, "Oh, brrr."
05:36 People are like, "See, see, see, see, see?"
05:38 That's what I was counting on.
05:39 I think that's why people are so intrigued right now because it blew up too fast.
05:43 It's coming back down to earth fast.
05:45 Is this going to stabilize and be a consistent starting quarterback, or was it just a flash
05:51 in the pan?
05:52 I don't know.
05:53 Joe Montana, Steve Young, Jimmy Garoppolo, is it such a bad thing if he's in the middle?
06:02 Don't put them that close to Joe Montana.
06:03 Your hands were touching right there.
06:05 If he comes right in the middle between there.
06:08 I don't even think it's Jeff Garcia right now.
06:10 Jeff Garcia made one of the biggest comebacks in playoff history.
06:14 What was he now, 20-something?
06:16 Against the Giants, yes, he was.
06:17 Yes, he was.
06:18 Yes, he was.
06:19 Yeah.
06:20 They should have beaten the Tampa Bay- People say, "Oh, Joe Montana struggled a little
06:24 bit when he was younger.
06:25 He didn't win so much."
06:26 He was on a rebuilding team.
06:28 Let's be honest.
06:29 Brock Purdy is not on a rebuilding team whatsoever.
06:31 No, no.
06:32 It was a team that made Jimmy Garoppolo look good.
06:35 Right, and he's out of the league, essentially.
06:38 He's not out of the game collecting checks, but essentially- But I do think the other
06:44 thing that you can't see, Grant, the reason for optimism, is that I think Brock is probably
06:49 mentally the toughest quarterback that Kyle has had in a while.
06:55 I say this because Kyle broke Jimmy.
07:00 Jimmy was not ever himself after that injury.
07:03 Is Kyle breaking Brock right now?
07:05 That's what I want to know.
07:06 Well, that's the thing.
07:07 Why is this a losing streak?
07:09 How much longer is this going to go?
07:10 Why is Brock committing more turnovers every game?
07:12 Is Kyle breaking him?
07:14 Because you know Kyle's not nice to people after losses.
07:16 He's not the kind of guy who goes up to Brock at his locker, puts his arm around him, and
07:19 says, "Hey, buddy.
07:20 We'll get him next season."
07:21 But he did mention how- When have you ever heard Kyle say that question that you asked
07:26 him?
07:27 That was as close as him defending a quarterback that I've ever seen him do.
07:32 He hasn't done that.
07:33 He never did that for Jimmy.
07:35 The way I interpreted that was that Kyle was not expecting that question, didn't want that
07:38 question to be asked, and was angry at me for asking it.
07:44 Not prepared.
07:45 I don't think he thought through his answer at all.
07:47 I think he sort of was kind of caught flat-footed.
07:50 So I mean, if he was prepared for it, he could have said something a whole lot more elegant
07:56 defending his quarterback other than, "There's no reason to."
07:59 Yeah, I could give you six reasons in the last three games why you could think about
08:03 it.
08:04 So anyway, that's the way I interpreted it.
08:08 (upbeat music)
