00:00 In Australia, each week, one woman is killed by a partner, making intimate partner violence
00:11 the top risk for young and adult women.
00:15 By the age of 15, one in five women has experienced sexual violence, and one in six has faced
00:20 partner violence.
00:21 Rates are particularly high for Indigenous women, pregnant women, and those with a disability.
00:28 Starwatch estimates 10 women a day present a hospital with injuries perpetrated at home.
00:34 Former journalist Sherelle Moody has spent years mapping the deaths of Australian women
00:39 via the Red Heart Campaign.
00:42 According to her research, 63 women were killed in Australia in 2019, 57 women in 2020, 43
00:53 in 2021, and in 2022, an alarming rise to 56 again.
00:59 The campaign came on the back of me doing a lot of reporting for my work with News Corp
01:05 Australia on domestic and family violence.
01:10 And I found that even though we were able to give voice to some of the many stories
01:15 that I heard of domestic and family violence survival, we couldn't possibly publish every
01:21 story.
01:22 In 2023, White Ribbon Australia calculated that at least one woman had been killed in
01:28 Australia every five days.
01:32 Women aged 18 to 34 are nearly three times more likely to experience intimate partner
01:37 violence, with young women six times more likely to experience sexual violence.
01:44 Reports have also shown that women seeking hospital treatment for at-home violence injuries
01:49 are 10 times more likely to end up dying from assault.
01:54 I don't think there's anybody who would think that the sheer prevalence of it is okay in
02:00 any way.
