00:00 "The use of the Malay language should not only be made compulsory for correspondence
00:06 with government departments and agencies, but also apply to official events and programs,"
00:12 says an academic.
00:14 Teo Kok Siong, a fellow with the National Council of Professors, noted that some official
00:19 government programs still use English.
00:22 He questioned why events like Flag Off and the recent Fit Malaysia program weren't called
00:27 Majlis Permulaan or Malaysia Cergas, respectively.
00:32 Teo also said that the government must ensure all parties adhere to Article 152 of the federal
00:37 constitution, which says that the function and role of Malay as the national language
00:43 cannot be disputed.
00:45 Meanwhile, constitutional expert Wan Amat Fauzi Wan Husin said Malay should also be
00:50 used as the medium of instruction in public and private universities and that teaching
00:55 in Malay is important as it fosters national identity and love for one's nation.
