00:00University Technology Mara has denied forcing non-Muslim Bumi Putra students from East Malaysia

00:07to attend Islamic talks at an identity and spirituality camp held on January 11th.

00:13The university said there were other talks that non-Muslim students attended,

00:18such as one on social ethics, while their Muslim counterparts went for Islamic charamas.

00:23UITM said it decided to hold the camp at a nearby mosque and its hall,

00:28as it was easier to manage saved time and logistics resources,

00:32while ensuring participants could follow the planned activities without much disruption.

00:38UITM said it views the confusion that arose due to communication issues

00:43and the camp's poster seriously, adding that improvements will be made to avoid

00:47misunderstandings and respect the religious and cultural sensitivities of all participants.

00:53Several NGOs had urged Higher Education Minister Zamri Abdul Qadir to explain claims that non-Muslim

01:00Bumi Putra students from East Malaysia at UITM were forced to attend an Islamic event on campus.

01:07They said it would be an attack on religious freedom as well as the identity and autonomy

01:12of Sabah and Sarawak if the allegations were true. According to viral posters of the two-day event,

01:19all non-Muslim students and 10 Muslim students from each class at UITM Shah Alam

01:24were required to attend an identity and spirituality camp at a mosque.
