00:00 Is Moto Guzzi Stelvio the best Moto Guzzi that's ever been created?
00:05 [Music]
00:11 I'm going to say yes, and this is why.
00:13 So we're in the hills above Nuoli, Italy on an exclusive first ride of the 2024 Moto Guzzi Stelvio.
00:20 And right off the bat, I have to say, without a doubt, there has been no better Moto Guzzi that's ever been created.
00:28 I've only spent probably 100 kilometers or 60 miles on this bike so far, and I am in love.
00:34 It is amazing.
00:35 We're going to talk about the engine first.
00:37 It is the same 1,042 cc compact block engine that powers the V100 Mandello.
00:45 There is no internal changes to this engine whatsoever to make it different from that bike.
00:50 And in that bike, it is great. In this bike, it's actually spectacular.
00:54 They've made just some fine changes to the engine that you wouldn't even know about.
00:59 One of them being adding some rigidity to the back of the engine for the swing arm with the extra stress that comes from an adventure touring motorcycle.
01:08 On top of that, there's a new clutch that has an anti-hopping feature and a self-assist feature.
01:15 They've added a damper inside of it to help it shift better.
01:19 So it actually goes through the gears better than the V100.
01:22 They have one change. They didn't tell us exactly what.
01:25 They're being kind of tight-lipped on all the changes because they want to keep you guessing and staying tuned until all the details are released at EICMA.
01:34 The 115 horsepower and 77 pound-feet of torque that this engine makes is perfectly suited for adventure touring.
01:41 Smooth almost everywhere.
01:43 There's a very, very light buzz in the bars.
01:46 75 or 80 miles an hour in sixth gear, so notice it if you're looking for it.
01:52 The engine is a stress member of the frame.
01:54 It's part of the chassis, and bolted off of that comes all the other bits.
01:58 The suspension, front and rear, the frame.
02:00 So the frame is different than the Mandello frame.
02:02 It's longer in the front. It has a different rake.
02:05 It's reinforced. It's got some different geometry at the very front to make room for a larger front tire.
02:12 19-inch front tire, 17-inch rear tire, and they come with Michelin Anakee Adventure tires.
02:19 It's street-based with some off-road ability, and they chose that for the excellent on-road manners along with some ability to go off-road.
02:27 So weight is stated at 542 pounds wet, and it has a 5.1-gallon fuel tank.
02:35 Overall, that is very kind of standard fare for this class of motorcycle.
02:39 It does feel lighter on the road.
02:41 It has the 542 pounds that it has, and I think that just comes down to the leverage of the bars, the skinniness of the tank and seat area.
02:49 Getting it up off the side stand is cake, especially with the easy reach of the ground.
02:53 So attached to that front end, a 46-millimeter Sachs fork that is adjustable for preload and rebound, not for compression.
03:04 On the road, very nice. I wouldn't say that I would want to make any changes in terms of compression.
03:09 At the rear, Monoshock by KYB. It also is adjustable for preload and rebound.
03:17 Both ends travel through 170-millimeter travel, or 6.7 inches, you know, in the middle of the road for an adventure bike.
03:24 Gravel roads and some mild off-roading is what this bike is about with excellent on-road performance.
03:31 Now, being street-focused, there are some chassis decisions that obviously are not very off-road oriented,
03:37 one of them being the foot pegs attached to the engine. They're rubber-mounted to get rid of some vibration.
03:43 When you're standing up on the motorcycle, it feels very kind of squishy and moves around a little bit,
03:48 but when you're sitting, you don't notice it. It's totally fine.
03:51 It has an electronically adjustable windscreen that moves through 70 millimeters or 2 3/4 inches.
03:59 It's infinitely adjustable. It's super easy to use.
04:02 And when the thing is all the way up, you're not going to get any buffeting. On top of that, tall, wide bars.
04:07 When you sit down in the motorcycle on this 32.7-inch high seat, but it feels much lower than that.
04:14 It's very thin at the front, easy to get your feet on the ground, and then when you need a lot of padding or whatever,
04:20 you can scoot back on the seat and it's very comfortable.
04:22 There are five rider modes available on the Stelvio. First one is street mode.
04:26 Second, touring. There's a rain mode. There's a sport mode. And then there's an off-road mode.
04:30 All those tie into the engine braking and the traction control and the ABS.
04:36 So they're all kind of preset, but you can go through and you can change things.
04:39 Engine braking is tied to the ride mode. You can't change engine braking modes, which is totally fine.
04:46 But every other mode you can go through and change.
04:48 And so the street, the touring and the raid mode have less aggressive throttle response
04:55 and more, say, safer modes of traction control that is lean sensitive.
05:00 And then when you get into sport and off-road, you get a full power, you get instant throttle response,
05:08 and you have ABS settings that are tailored to those modes as well.
05:12 Off-road mode defaults to ABS on the front in the lowest amount and no ABS on the rear.
05:20 And you can also turn it off completely if need be.
05:23 Overall, this right here may be the point where Moto Guzzi goes mainstream
05:28 and more people start to look at it because this is an excellent choice in the 900 to 1100 cc adventure bike range.
05:35 So that's it for our first exclusive ride of the 2024 Moto Guzzi Stelvio.
