Bristol Musical Comedy Club, a musical theatre club in the city, is putting on the rarely performed Maltby and Shire ‘Closer than Ever’. But, this production is different to any you may have seen before- it is set on a subway train in an ‘in the round’ style performance.

00:00 To be a part of BMCC is to find yourself a family. The people that I've met in my relatively
00:07 short time have become very, very dear friends and people who have known each other for years,
00:13 if not decades, are very, very welcoming to taking on new people from new backgrounds,
00:19 new talents. Every single person that comes in brings an extra ingredient, an extra level
00:24 of spice to the club.
00:26 Bristol Musical Comedy Club is one of Bristol's foremost amateur theatre clubs. Established
00:32 in 1926, BMCC have been providing entertainment for the people of Bristol ever since, and
00:38 this week is no different.
00:41 The company are performing the rarely seen David Shire and Richard Mowbray musical Closer
00:48 Than Ever.
00:50 Let's chat to some of team BMCC to find out what the rehearsal period has been like.
00:56 They've been so much fun, I think, with this show because there's such a mixture of songs,
01:03 some that are really upbeat and dancey, some that are more about the emotion and acting
01:09 through song. We've all had such a big opportunity to show off different ranges of our talents
01:18 and our skills and everyone's got a moment, so the rehearsal period has been so much fun.
01:23 It's been really nice because we've been introducing the cast, most of them didn't know the songs
01:26 at all, so everything's brand new. So, kind of note-bashing, obviously, and then refining
01:32 it, getting the whole polishing and then putting the choreo with it.
01:37 It's a group of people of all talents, all backgrounds, from all across Bristol and even
01:42 further from Bristol, just bringing a spark to the city, just bringing joy that they find
01:49 in theatre to other people. That's why we do what we do. We love being on stage and
01:53 we love sharing that.
01:54 BMCC put on two shows a year, giving the people of Bristol two chances to see the company's
02:00 magic on stage.
02:02 Joyful. I think it's so joyful having the opportunity to do something that's just for
02:07 fun. We're all here because we love it. We're all amateurs, but we do it because it's joyful,
02:13 we love it and it kind of takes us away from our everyday. We've all got jobs, but we come
02:19 here and we do it for fun, so yeah, it's good.
02:22 Being able to perform on the stage and being able to share that love of the singing, the
02:28 acting, the dancing and just introducing new music to people is really exciting.
02:33 So I've got a few different bits and bobs to do. So I've got a few dance numbers, I've
02:40 got a really fun song called Three Friends where I'm playing this lawyer character, a
02:47 really fun number where I'm playing a scientist.
02:49 You'll definitely find a song that speaks to you personally. All the songs are aspects
02:54 of life and so there's definitely going to be something which for you really resonates
02:59 or is something that you'll take home as being very meaningful.
