Modern, Aggressive, Electric MR2 of Our Dreams, New Toyota FT-Se Concept
After teasing a glimpse of an intriguing electric sports car concept last week, Toyota has officially unveiled the FT-Se at the ongoing Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo. The car was pitched as a concept to preview "one of the sports car options" that Toyota is trying to explore in the carbon-neutral era.
Few would argue that the FT-Se is quite beautiful. Instead of taking obvious design inspiration from the current Supra and GR 86 sports cars, Toyota seems to have evolved the design of the 2021 GR Sports Concept to create a concept that looks modern, aggressive and, so to speak, sexy. The front immediately catches the eye thanks to the blacked-out grille and large air intakes, as well as the LED daytime running lights that extend vertically to the base of the dashboard.
The pointed nose is complemented by sharp angles on the front quarter panels and a cabin shape that reminds us of the Lotus Evora. Complex wheels set atop red brake calipers contribute to the sporty feel of the concept, as do striking rocker panels, recessed door handles and small side mirrors.
Toyota says the GR-branded concept's "cutting-edge silhouette" is designed to reduce aerodynamic drag, and it certainly looks that way, especially thanks to the molded rear quarter panels that transition smoothly into the small fins covered by the slim LED taillights. , it helps the car cut the air. Other rear highlights include a ducktail spoiler and a striking diffuser, not unlike the Supra. Toyota also demonstrated a version of the FT-Se at a racetrack, with a fixed rear wing fitted to the rear window.
The inside of the FT-Se is as striking as the outside. In front of the driver is a bifurcated steering wheel with dual portrait displays on each side that display key vehicle and infotainment functions. The car also features a digital instrument cluster and Recaro seats in beautiful blue Alcantara with carbon fiber backing. The door panels, lower part of the dashboard and center console also use an intricate blue weave that appears to be made of plastic.
The Japanese automaker did not provide detailed information about the concept's powertrain, other than confirming that it is a battery electric vehicle. It is stated that Toyota Gazoo Racing incorporates the expertise it has gained in motor sports in recent years and supports software updates to "grow with the driver".
