Tim delves into the secrets hidden within the historic Rising Sun pub in Mongarlowe, NSW.
Transcript
00:00 During its heyday in the mid 1800s during the gold rush, hundreds of miners would have crossed
00:06 the Mongalo River right here on their way up to a bustling Mongalo village which back then
00:13 boasted 10 pubs. Today there's not much left in Mongalo. It's now a quiet place home to a handful
00:20 of artists and others who've come here to escape the rigors of city life. One of those pubs where
00:26 miners of the 1800s would have sat around the bar chatting about their fortunes and misfortunes
00:33 was the Rising Sun. It's one of only three of Mongalo's original buildings still standing.
00:41 Although it hasn't operated as a pub for over a hundred years, during restoration work current
00:47 owners Graham and Maureen Rossiter uncovered a few intriguing reminders of the building's
00:54 early days. In any restoration you find some interesting things around a place and the Rising
01:00 Sun is exactly the same. This is an old fork that we found inside there and some other implements
01:06 but we've got some other very interesting things in which will surprise you and we're going to go
01:11 inside to have a look at those. Come in here Jim we're going to have a look at this little hidey
01:16 hole here. Just pull back the firebox, get the wood out of the way here and we're just going to
01:26 open up this little hidey hole here which in the day either the ladies of the night or gentlemen
01:34 staying here in this particular room they would want to keep their goods and chattel somewhere.
01:40 Of course no banks or anything like that so what they would be able to do is pop them into this
01:46 little secure area here and as we can see in here it's basically just a little box and is covered up
01:55 by the the firewood and this firebox and hopefully would keep their goods and chattels very secure
02:03 and it's either the time they were here or if they're away from the Rising Sun.
